Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Witness of the Vulgate, Peshitta and Septuagint to the d104 of Zephaniah Hastings' Dictionary of the Bible that it is accepted by most moderns. He himself does not accept it, but holds that the cus tom of consigning manuscripts that had been damaged by the tooth of time, by fire, or by water, or that were found to contain more than a certain number of mistakes, to the so-called genizah, which was generally a room in the cellar of a synagogue, is suffi cient to explain all the phenomena. This thesis, whether true or not, Offers striking proof that the present Hebrew text gives but scant aid in tracing Its own history beyond a certain point, or in fixing its earliest form. Moreover, there are but few manuscripts, of which none are very old, and textual types - the chief material for the criticism of texts - are thus not to be found.1 But it is a cardinal principle of criticism that to recover the true text of an ancient document it is first necessary to know its history; and that manuscripts, although the text which they contain is undated and unlocalized, generally furnish the primary data for reconstruct ing this history with the help of versions, which serve in a sec ondary capacity to fix the time and place of origin of the differ ent textual types that the manuscripts present. In the Old Tes tament, however, there are no types of text in regard to which versions can be made to indicate a choice, but they themselves become the principal data. Instead of being called on to show from which particular type of two or more existing types it was made, a version must surrender the text on which it was based, in order that it may then be decided whether that text agrees with or differs from the single Hebrew textual type. Because a version must thus itself yield the text from which it was made, Old Testament Criticism is complicated by all the variable factors necessarily connected with translation and translators. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zephaniah's Oracles against the Nations deals with exegetical methods as well as their application to the text. The first part of the book examines the Hebrew text from the viewpoint of synchrony, employing insights from modern linguistic and literary theory. Such important concepts as text-grammar, textual hierarchy, communicational and actantial analysis on the one hand, and prosodic hierarchy and Hebrew versification on the other, emerge from this discussion. The second part of the book discusses diachronical matters such as the redactional process, its theological and pastoral significance, and the hermeneutical implications of such diachronical study. Of special interest are the additional sections on the issues of the so-called woe-cry and oracles against the nations in the Old Testament. This timely study is particularly useful for those interested in the linguistic analysis and literary interpretation of the Hebrew Bible.

Book excerpt: This handbook provides a practical guide for the student and scholar alike who wishes to use the Septuagint (LXX) in the text-critical analysis of the Hebrew Bible. It does not serve as another theoretical introduction to the LXX, but it provides all the practical background information needed for the integration of the LXX in biblical studies. The LXX, together with the Masoretic Text and several Qumran scrolls, remains the most significant source of information for the study of ancient Scripture, but it is written in Greek, and many technical details need to be taken into consideration when using this tool. Therefore, a practical handbook such as this is needed for the integration of the Greek translation in the study of the Hebrew Bible. The Text-Critical Use of the Septuagint in Biblical Research is based on much background information, intuition and experience, clear thinking, and a solid description of the procedures followed. The author presents his handbook after half a century of study of the Septuagint, four decades of specialized teaching experience, and involvement in several research projects focusing on the relation between the Hebrew and Greek Bibles. The first two editions of this handbook, published by Simor of Jerusalem (Jerusalem Biblical Studies 3 [1981] and 8 [1997]), received much praise but have been out of print for a considerable period. This, the third, edition presents a completely revised version of the previous editions based on the many developments that took place in the analysis of the Septuagint, the Hebrew Bible and the Qumran Scrolls. Much new information has also been added. Eisenbrauns has been involved in the marketing of the previous two editions and is proud to offer now its own completely novel edition. A must for students of the Hebrew Bible, textual criticism, the Septuagint and the other ancient translations, Dead Sea Scrolls, and Jewish Hellenism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this commentary, Thomas Renz reads Nahum, Habakkuk, and Zephaniah as three carefully crafted writings of enduring relevance, each of which makes a vital contribution to the biblical canon. Discussing the historical settings, Renz takes up both long-standing issues, such as the relationship of Zephaniah to Josiah’s reforms, and the socioeconomic conditions of the time suggested by recent archaeological research. The place of these writings within the Book of the Twelve is given fresh consideration, including the question of what one should make of the alleged redaction history of Nahum and Habakkuk. The author’s careful translation of the text comes with detailed textual notes, illuminating some of the Bible’s most outstanding poetry (Nahum) and one of the biblical chapters that is among the most difficult to translate (Habakkuk 3). The thorough verse-by-verse commentary is followed by stimulating theological reflection, opening up avenues for teaching and preaching from these prophetic writings. No matter their previous familiarity with these and other Minor Prophets, scholars, pastors, and lay readers alike will find needed guidance in working through these difficult but important books of the Bible.

The book is an earnest attempt to hear the message of the ancient prophets, a message that remains relevant today.
