There's only one problem--she doesn't know it. Jet has never lived a so-called normal life. Raised by her single Japanese mother on a Navajo reservation in the Southwest, Jet's life was a constant litany of mysterious physical and mental training. For as long as Jet can remember, every Saturday night she and her mother played "the game" on the local mountain. But this time, Jet is fighting for her life. And at the end of the night, her mother dies and Jet finds herself an orphan--and in mortal danger. Fulfilling her mother's dying wish, Jet flies to Japan to live with her grandfather, where she discovers she is the only one who can protect a family treasure hidden in her ancestral land. She's terrified, but if Jet won't fight to protect her world, who will? Stalked by bounty hunters and desperately attracted with the man who's been sent to kill her, Jet must be strong enough to protect the treasure, preserve an ancient culture and save a sacred mountain from destruction. In Jet Black and the Ninja Wind, multiple award-winning author, poet and translator team Leza Lowitz and Shogo Oketani make their first foray into young adult fiction with a compulsively readable tale whose teenage heroine must discover if she can put the blade above the heart--or die trying.

Book excerpt: Hadrian Marlowe, a man revered as a hero and despised as a murderer, chronicles his tale in the galaxy-spanning debut of the Sun Eater series, merging the best of space opera and epic fantasy. It was not his war. The galaxy remembers him as a hero: the man who burned every last alien Cielcin from the sky. They remember him as a monster: the devil who destroyed a sun, casually annihilating four billion human lives—even the Emperor himself—against Imperial orders. But Hadrian was not a hero. He was not a monster. He was not even a soldier. On the wrong planet, at the right time, for the best reasons, Hadrian Marlowe starts down a path that can only end in fire. He flees his father and a future as a torturer only to be left stranded on a strange, backwater world. Forced to fight as a gladiator and navigate the intrigues of a foreign planetary court, Hadrian must fight a war he did not start, for an Empire he does not love, against an enemy he will never understand.

Book excerpt: From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Anathem, Reamde, and Cryptonomicon comes an exciting and thought-provoking science fiction epic—a grand story of annihilation and survival spanning five thousand years. What would happen if the world were ending? A catastrophic event renders the earth a ticking time bomb. In a feverish race against the inevitable, nations around the globe band together to devise an ambitious plan to ensure the survival of humanity far beyond our atmosphere, in outer space. But the complexities and unpredictability of human nature coupled with unforeseen challenges and dangers threaten the intrepid pioneers, until only a handful of survivors remain . . . Five thousand years later, their progeny—seven distinct races now three billion strong—embark on yet another audacious journey into the unknown . . . to an alien world utterly transformed by cataclysm and time: Earth. A writer of dazzling genius and imaginative vision, Neal Stephenson combines science, philosophy, technology, psychology, and literature in a magnificent work of speculative fiction that offers a portrait of a future that is both extraordinary and eerily recognizable. As he did in Anathem, Cryptonomicon, the Baroque Cycle, and Reamde, Stephenson explores some of our biggest ideas and perplexing challenges in a breathtaking saga that is daring, engrossing, and altogether brilliant.

Their loot is priceless, but Princeton has insured it for twenty-five million dollars. Bruce Cable owns a popular bookstore in the sleepy resort town of Santa Rosa on Camino Island in Florida. He makes his real money, though, as a prominent dealer in rare books. Very few people know that he occasionally dabbles in the black market of stolen books and manuscripts. Mercer Mann is a young novelist with a severe case of writer’s block who has recently been laid off from her teaching position. She is approached by an elegant, mysterious woman working for an even more mysterious company. A generous offer of money convinces Mercer to go undercover and infiltrate Bruce Cable’s circle of literary friends, ideally getting close enough to him to learn his secrets. Sworn to defend her, misfits Mace, Raven, and Vine battle to keep Nikki safe while hiding their deepest secret—and the wings that come with. Meanwhile, a growing and forbidden attraction between Nikki and two of her protectors presents a whole other danger. As the mysteries behind the boys’ powers, as well as her role in a scientist’s dark plan, unfold, Nikki is faced with choices that could upend the balance between heaven and hell. In Guardian, Nikki promised she would move on from Mace and Raven, but a close-quarters mission meant to assure her protection brings all three together in close quarters. Mace, steadfast and deeply in love, wants to protect Nikki at all costs, while Raven’s loyalty to Nikki finds him advocating for her independence and battling his own darker inclinations. At the same time, Nikki finds it harder and harder to choose between the two heavenly beings she may never have. Dangers intensify, and tensions flare as the purpose of their journey becomes clear. Can their defenses hold up to master manipulator Damon Vessler and the powerful secret he holds regarding Nikki’s heritage? Can anyone protect Nikki from her true purpose and destiny? And in the final book, Avenger, with a Seeker trained on her blood, Nikki flees with Raven, while Mace and the other Halflings fight the battle that has erupted on earth. But even as the two boys she loves fight for her, she knows the battle will be hers to win. Determined to uncover the secrets of her past, and exactly how she fits into Vessler's twisted plans, Nikki sets off on her own, and soon discovers facing hellacious beasts is nothing compared to the decision she will need to make. One that could change not only the war, and her relationship with Mace and Raven, but her future with the Throne.

Haunted by the horrors of his fall, Enzo, a demon agent of the Fel, smothers the angst of his impending damnation by indulging in vice with no regard to who it wrecks. But the dreadlord has given him a new assignment: infiltrate the enemy sect of demons known as the Unfallen and recover their captured ally, Lorcan, the alpha of Atro City’s pack. The mission goes according to plan, until he falls in love with someone he should hate. Or at the very least use and destroy. Blindsided by emotions he never thought were possible to feel, Enzo must blend in with his enemies and decide which side of the holy war he’s really on—even though he’s damned no matter what he chooses. With angelic lore inspired by Milton’s Paradise Lost and The Book of Enoch… This magical & macabre urban fantasy features a brooding, BMX-riding antihero who wants nothing to do with the forces of good unless it suits him. ~ BOOK TWO: SELFISH ANGEL Ex-skinhead and drug dealer Hewey Steps puts his sordid past behind him to begin his new life as a magic-wielding agent of the Unfallen. But Lorcan’s Pack wants revenge on his demon partner, Enzo, who still refuses to accept his rulership as archon—since waking the fallen angel’s dormant power could spell disaster for anyone who gets in his way, especially those who dare to threaten the woman he loves. Hewey and Enzo grapple with the vile sins of their past, as an insidious threat lurks in the bustling hallways at Stillwater, waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike… And it’s an enemy that cannot be touched. Old habits and prejudices die hard in this heart-stopping addition to the Archon Rising trilogy. Featuring a dynamic cast of morally gray characters, thrilling action, tortured romance, and diabolic scenes reminiscent of the gritty cult-classic American History X… Delve into this horror-fantasy world today! ~ BOOK THREE: BROKEN ARCHON The enemy archon has awakened, and Enzo must take up his crown to put a stop to the looming threat infesting Atro City. But his fiercely loyal partner, Hewey, is preoccupied with his own problems after being reconnected with his troubled high-school sweetheart, as well as the racist Skeads he once fought for. And with Enzo’s wife bucking against the corruptive influence of misused fellcraft and an unlikely paramour, the morally conflicted demon is angrier than ever and more susceptible to the relentless mania induced by the use of his archon magic. Emotionally compelling, with intense gritty action and gorgeously macabre departures into Lovecraftian horror. Complete your journey into this brutal urban fantasy series today! Book excerpt: Introducing Alfonso Perplexon, hero of the epic fantasy tale Dormia! Alfonso Perplexon is an unusual sleeper. He climbs trees, raises falcons, even shoots deadly accurate arrows, all in his sleep. No one can figure out why. Then one evening a man arrives at Alfonso’s door, claiming to be Alfonso’s long-lost uncle Hill. This uncle tells a fantastical tale: Alfonso’s ancestors hail from Dormia—an ancient kingdom of gifted sleepers—which is hidden in the snowy peaks of the Ural Mountains. According to Hill, Dormia exists thanks to a tree known as the Founding Tree, with roots that pump life into the frozen valley. But the Founding Tree is now dying, and in a matter of days, Dormia faces an icy apocalypse. Dormia’s salvation lies with the Great Sleeper, who possesses the special powers to enter a sleep trance and grow a new Founding Tree. Hill suspects that Alfonso is just such a person. In fact, Alfonso’s sleeping-self has already hatched this tree. Now the question is: Can Alfonso and his uncle deliver it in time? They must hurry, but they also must be careful not to be followed by Dormia’s age-old enemy, the Dragoonya, who are always hunting for one of the secret entryways into Dormia. Alfonso agrees to take the tree to Dormia, and thus begins one of the greatest adventures a twelve-year-old boy could ever wish for. As he woke up from a late afternoon nap, Alfonso blinked open his eyes and discovered that he was perched at the top of a gigantic pine tree – some two-hundred feet above the ground. The view was spectacular. Alfonso could see for miles in every direction and he could even make out his house in the distant hamlet of World’s End, Minnesota. Unfortunately, there was no time to enjoy the view. The small branch that Alfonso stood upon was covered with gleaming snow and creaked dangerously under the pressure of his weight. Icy gusts of wind shook the entire treetop. Alfonso looked down grimly at the ground far below. If he fell, he would most certainly die. “Oh brother,” muttered Alfonso to himself. “Not again.”
