Book excerpt: German Renaissance artist Hans Burgkmair the Elder (1473-1531) is primarily known for his works commissioned by Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I (1459-1519). In the chivalric novel The White King (or Der Weiss König, as it was originally titled in German), Burgkmair produced more than two hundred woodcuts chronicling important moments in Maximilian's life, from birth to old age. It was an immense task, completed between 1514 and 1516, and required the help of fellow German artists Leonhard Beck (c. 1480-1542), Hans Schäufelein (c. 1480-1540), and Hans Springinklee (c. 1490-c. 1540).Marx Treitzsaurwein (1450-1527), the emperor's secretary, wrote the story, though Maximilian dictated some of the text. Throughout the novel, the protagonist wasn't directly identified as Maximilian; instead he was referred to as the White King and his father as the Old White King. The story stretched the truth about Maximilian's life, a fault Treitzsaurwein should be forgiven, as it was probably best to put a positive spin on history when writing about the king. The book was not completed in Maximilian's lifetime and wasn't formally published until 1775.Of the original woodcuts, a significant number depict epic battles and sieges, conquests and surrenders, or diplomatic meetings of kings and queens. Many of the scenes show the young Maximilian in tactical training: learning to fire a bow, handle a sword, or secure a battle camp. Reproduced here is a carefully selected set of twenty-five of these woodcuts, ordered chronologically as they appear in the 1775 publication. While you enjoy the images and add your own color to them, look for the engraved initials "H.B." hidden on armor, artillery, blades, boats, furnishings, and facades-standing, of course, for the emperor's artist, Hans Burgkmair.

Book excerpt: The definitive history of a powerful family dynasty who dominated Europe for centuries -- from their rise to power to their eventual downfall. In The Habsburgs, Martyn Rady tells the epic story of a dynasty and the world it built -- and then lost -- over nearly a millennium. From modest origins, the Habsburgs gained control of the Holy Roman Empire in the fifteenth century. Then, in just a few decades, their possessions rapidly expanded to take in a large part of Europe, stretching from Hungary to Spain, and parts of the New World and the Far East. The Habsburgs continued to dominate Central Europe through the First World War. Historians often depict the Habsburgs as leaders of a ramshackle empire. But Rady reveals their enduring power, driven by the belief that they were destined to rule the world as defenders of the Roman Catholic Church, guarantors of peace, and patrons of learning. The Habsburgs is the definitive history of a remarkable dynasty that forever changed Europe and the world.

Book excerpt: From the bestselling author of The White Donkey, a heartbreaking and visceral graphic novel set against the stark beauty of Afghanistan's mountain villages that examines prejudice and the military remnants of colonialism. In this hotly anticipatednew work from Maximilian Uriarte, creator of the popular Terminal Lance comics and The White Donkey, tells a "thrillingly cinematic" (Publishers Weekly) story of the personal cost of war and the power of human connection. Lapis Lazuli is a rich blue semiprecious gemstone found deep in the Sar-i-sang mountains of Afghanistan's Badakhshan province. For thousands of years it has sustained the nearby mining villages, whose inhabitants lived peacefully in the mountainous landscape--until the Taliban, known in the region as the Horsemen, came to seek the riches stored deep beneath the earth. Taliban rule has turned the stone into a conflict mineral, as they steal and sell it for their own gain. At the behest of the fledgling Afghan government, seeking to wrest back control of the province, United States Marines are sent into the mountains. A platoon led by their eager and naive commander, First Lieutenant Roberts, and a stoic, fierce squad leader, Sergeant King, must overcome barriers of language and culture in this remote region to win the locals' trust, and their freedom from Taliban rule. Along the way, they must also wrestle with their demons--and face unimaginably difficult choices. A sweeping yet intimate story about brutality, kindness, and the remnants of colonialism, Battle Born: Lapis Lazuli is an epic saga from the voice of a new generation of military veterans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Native North Americans have rich and diverse cultures and traditions. However, many misconceptions, prejudices, and stereotypes exist due to the lack of understanding and ignorance of these cultures. It is important that children and adolescents learn about and appreciate the invaluable contributions that North American Native groups have made to American society. Equally important is the availability of resources that accurately and objectively portray the historical events that occurred when European settlers displaced thousands of Native North Americans from their ancestral homelands. In Native North Americans in Literature for Youth, Alice Crosetto and Rajinder Garcha identify hundreds of appropriate and quality resources, including books, Internet sites, and media titles for K-12 students and educators. Entries are subdivided into chapters covering geographic regions, history, religions, social life, customs and traditions, nations, oral tradition, biographies, and fiction. Additionally, there are chapters for general reference resources, curricular resources for educators, media, and Internet sites. Annotations provide complete bibliographical descriptions of the entries, and each entry is identified with the grade level for which it is best suited. Reviews, awards, series, and URLs for supplemental online resources are also included. Anyone—especially students, teachers, librarians, and parents—interested in locating useful and accurate resources regarding Native North Americans will find this reference book a helpful and essential tool.
