Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Whale Fishery and Its Appliances Ship. - When coast-whaling was first essayed by Americans, the smaller class of vessels, such as sloops and schooners, were employed, but very short voyages were made. When, however, it was found necessary, as well as profitable, to whale out in the deep, the smaller class of vessels gave way to barks and ships, principally the latter. These were invariably sailing vessels, until, in 1880, a bark with auxilliary steam power, the Mary and Helen, afterwards the Rodgers, was success fully introduced in the North Pacific, and subsequently similar vessels owned in New Bedford and San Francisco have been sent to the same grounds. The largest fleet employed in this industry, consisting of schooners, barks, brigs, and several ships, varying from 66 to 440 tons, is owned by New Bedford. The majority of these are barks, which, as is well known, are as large as ships, the only difference being the rig. The vessels hailing from San Francisco are principally barks, varying from 175 to 533 tons, the latter being the tonnage of the recently con structed steamer Bowhead. The vessels owned at Provincetown, with the exception of one brig, the D. A. Small, 119 tons, are schooner-rigged, and vary from 69 to 117 tons. Boston owns one bark of 395 tons, and several brigs and schooners of from 92 to 123 tons. Edgartown has two barks, of 301 and 314 tons, respectively, and several schooners, varying from 89 to 100 tons. New London is engaged in sealing, as well as whaling, and sends from her wharves schooners of from 134 to 250 tons. Stonington owns two schooners of 70 tons each, and Marion one or two schooners of about 84 tons. Camels. - 0wing to the difficulty experienced by the heavily laden whale-ships in crossing Nantucket Bar, a kind of lighter, consisting of water-tight compartments, was constructed in 1842. Since the decline of the fishery at this port the camels have been destroyed, and about the only pieces of this peculiar craft that have been saved are to be found in the garden of Mr. F. O. Sanford, of Nantucket, having been utilized in the construction of a dike or terrace. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the American Whale Fishery Whaling was once a great industry in the United States. Whole communities were dependent on its success. When voyages were successful there was prosperity and plenty. When voyages failed there was hardship and hunger. Fortunes were made and lost. The foundation of many a stately old mansion in New England rests on oil and bone. But whaling was not a passing boom, not a thing apart from all other interests, not local in nature and local in effect. Its in uence as a social and economic factor was widespread. Whaling was a unit in a great whole - a part of the vast industrial interests of a growing country. It is so no longer. Whal ing is practically dead. The almost complete cycle of whaling activity is a good lesson in economics - the lesson of a ourishing enterprise quickly wiped out by changing economic conditions. The history of whaling forms an important chapter in the commercial history of the United States. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It is now issued by the kind permlssion of the author; and a wider circulation may thus be secured for the interesting contents of his volumes than they could receive in their original and more costly form. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Whale Fisheries: From the Basque Fisheries of the Tenth Century to the Hunting of the Finner Whale at the Present Date Necessarily some of the subject-matter is only of interest to the specialist, but whaling is so unique in many respects - in the romance of the life of the whalers, and in the natural history of one of the most remarkable groups of living creatures - that even detailed studies of the subject are not without interest. The romance of the whalers' life can only be realised by a perusal of the original writings of the whalers. In this book the main facts of the progress of the whaling trade have been marshalled. In many, if not in most cases, these facts speak for themselves. If within the next few decades whaling is not become entirely extinct, owing to the practical disappearance from the seas of the globe of the animals whose presence is necessary to its continued existence, it is imperative that further steps should be taken to regulate the industry by international action. Otherwise a most interesting group of marine animals will be hunted to the verge of extinction, and a great natural asset rendered Worthless to enrich a small group of speculators and capitalists. This book has been written in the h0pe that, before it is too late, steps will be taken to control this ruthless destruction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Collection of Books, Pamphlets, Log Books, Pictures, Etc: Illustrating Whales and the Whale Fishery Contained in the Free Public Library In the middle of the last century the district of New Bedford had a fleet of over 400 vessels, mostly ships and barques, engaged in whaling. The introduction of mineral oil as an illuminant, the scarcity of whales, and the Civil War all greatly depleted that fleet, and at the present writing there are no more than one-half dozen vessels which claim New Bedford as their home port. I have endeavored to give a strictly faithful account of the various phases of a sailor's existence. I have borne in mind the usual objec tion to books of this class; that they, are likely to inspire youth with an uneasy longing for a wandering, worthless mode of life. And as my little books were likely to interest young men and boys, my aim has been to give a plain com mon sense picture of that about which a false romance throws many charms. If anything I have written on this subject shall induce a young man, launching into life, to make a sensible choice of evils, by looking elsewhere than to the Sea for the adventurous existence which his Spirit requires, I Shall be rewarded.
