Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A walking guide to the Silverdale and Arnside Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), at the top of Morecambe Bay in Cumbria and Lancashire, overlooking the Lake District. 21 day walks are described between Carnforth, Holme, Milnthorpe and Arnside, climbing wooded hills and limestone escarpments with views of the Lake District fells. Walks are between 2 and 8 miles in length and visit nature reserves including Leighton Moss RSPB reserve, follow the canal and explore the shoreline. Summits include Wharton Crag, Arnside Knott, Farleton Knott and Hutton Roof Crags. The combinations of rocky coastal scenery, woodland and rough limestone hills either side of the M6 in north Lancashire, make this a paradise for walkers. Routes can easily be linked into longer walks and the extensive network of well walked paths enables walks to be shortened or lengthened at will. The area is renowned for its flora and fauna, its historic buildings and interesting geological features.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essential guidebook to walking the 135km (84 mile) Hadrian's Wall Path. One of the UK's most visited National Trails, it runs the length of the Roman Wall from Bowness-on-Solway in Cumbria to Wallsend, Newcastle. The trail is presented here in 10 stages, with suggestions for five and eight-day itineraries. It is suitable for beginners, although a reasonable level of fitness is required if doing it as a multi-day walk. The route is described both west to east and east to west, and the guidebook also features an extension through Newcastle to South Shields on the east coast. This guidebook contains a wealth of information on the history of the Wall, and a range of practical information for walkers, from accommodation and itinerary planning, to details on public transport and refreshments. A separate map booklet of 1:25,000 scale OS maps shows the full route. Clear step-by-step route descriptions in the guide are illustrated by 1:100,000 OS map extracts. The route description links together with the map booklet at each stage along the way, and the compact format is conveniently sized for slipping into a jacket pocket or the top of a rucksack.

First published in 1975 to mark the incorporation of the county into Cumbria, it has been in demand ever since as both a record of a lost county, as an informed and engaging record of one of the loveliest and least spoiled parts of Britain, where nature, culture and history have combined to leave a memorable and exhilarating legacy. Every single parish is included, with its notable buildings or landscapes mapped and illustrated, and its historical or other features of interest discussed and described. Though written "by an amateur, for amateurs" the author's deep knowledge of and close familiarity with the countryside pervade and illuminate the text and the two thousand line drawings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History lies almost forgotten among the low mountains and quaint towns of Pennsylvania's Laurel Highlands. Tales of Titanic survivors, brilliant inventors and forgotten heroes are all a part of the region's dim past. Since the 1790s, the highlands have been home to a booming glass industry that spun out early windows and flasks and, later, beautifully cut pieces of art. The wonder of the World's Fair of 1893 was none other than Westmoreland's H.C. Frick Coke Co.'s replica of a modern mine. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, lush fields and meadows produced the country's finest whiskey, Monongahela Rye. Author Cassandra Vivian travels off the beaten path to explore the hidden history of the Laurel Highlands.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Grand Tour of Monte Rosa encircles most of the Pennine Alps. It includes two volumes - Vol 1: Martigny to Valle delle Sesia (The Italian Valleys); and Vol 2: Valle delle Sesia to Martigny (The Swiss Valleys). Chris Wright's splendid text embraces all the many variants (especially in the Italian valleys), so as well as being the first English language guide to the entire tour, it can be used for smaller Pennine tours in Italy and Switzerland. Full account is taken of the places en route, accommodation and historical associations. The GTMR will certainly become the ultimate Alpine walk, outclassing all others. Strong walkers could do it in 13 days, but most walkers would prefer a more leisurely three weeks. Both volumes are copiously illustrated with photographs, maps and diagrams.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The High Tatras is a range of granite and gneiss mountains between Poland and Slovakia: 500 rocky summits, 100 of which exceed 2000m in height (Gerlach 2655m). The ridges are narrow and full of gendarmes and look formidable, yet, as you draw closer you discern the valleys which separate the peaks and realise there are ways through. A network of waymarked paths connects peaks, lakes and mountain huts. Many are simple walks, but some are exposed via ferrata-type scrambles. With the collapse of the Eastern Bloc, access is now a simple matter and is fully described in the book, as are all major centres on both sides of the border and a comprehensive selection from the easiest to the hardest. Despite its title the book also includes the slate peaks of Western Tatras and limestone peaks of the White Tatras as well as the High Tatras.

Book excerpt: Now that the former Soviet Union is open to Western walkers and climbers many are taking the opportunity to visit the fabled Caucasus, the highest mountains in Europe. British climbers knew the area a century ago and, unlike the Alps, the changes have been minimal. 62 walks are described. Some need simple climbing skills but most are straightforward. In addition two routes are described to the tops of Elbruz, the highest mountain in Europe. This is the first modern book of its kind by Russian authors. There are some very easy routes across the Main Range, following good, wide paths, but the fact is that the central part from the Klukhor to Mamisonsky passes cannot offer such a boon. It does not mean you have to climb to get over the Range, but you should not expect a comfortable path up to the saddle and you have to be ready for scree, grass and snow slopes. Not a big hardship, considering the reward in calm and seclusion, so rare nowadays.
