Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Western Journal of Education, 1931, Vol. 24 In a remarkable way these-authors have succeeded in bringing the story of the world from the first purpling of the dawn of civilization to the wonders in science and the industries today within 500 pages. They are brief without being lifeless. They have winnowed wheat from chaff, without soliciting your praises therefor. They. Have woven fact into fabric that is attractive in itself. They have availed themselves of every latest feature of the book-maker's art and the pedagog's skill, in order to make everything clean - Journal of Education, Dec. 6, 1917. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Western Journal of Education, 1905, Vol. 10 The Elementary School Association was just as enthusiastic and had a larger audience, with a very profitable program, and the Music Section is reported as the most interesting of all. The gen eral sessions set a new standard for future meetings. They were not confined to pedagogical matters, but were given up for the most part to cognate subjects. Governor George C. Pardee spoke on School Funds. Mr. W. H. Mills lectured on Our Prison Schools, and Mr. Jacob Riis upon The Battle with the Slum and The Mak ing of True Americans. He will not soon be forgotten, and his words and example will effect more, far more, than we can say. The thanks of every member are due to President Biedenbach for invit ing him to speak to us. And not only for that, but for the tact, foresight and indefatigable work which made the meeting a treat for every one. There was one other event which was not on the program, but which became an integral part of the meeting, for we went en masse to hear Paderewski play on Thursday afternoon. The next meeting will be held in Berkeley, with James A. Barr of Stockton as President. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Western Journal of Education, Vol. 34: January, 1928 The thirty-fourth annual session of the California Teachers Association, Southern Section, in Los Angeles, December 21, 22, 23, 1927, was the culmination of a great educational year in Southern California. Albert F. Vandegrift, head of the mathematics department, Belmont High School, Los Angeles, president of the association, had prepared a program of great interest. He had secured speakers from all sections of the United States. This made the convention cosmopolitan in character and widespread in educational outlook. The California Teachers Association, Southern Section, meeting was a tremendous affair. Twenty-six thousand programs were printed for this meeting. In fact, neither the national meeting of the N. E. A. in the summer nor the winter meeting of the Department of Superintendents transcend this Los Angeles meeting in magnitude. At the same time and moment in three separate auditoriums seating from three to five thousand persons, meetings were in progress before audiences that filled each place. Of section meeting places there were thirty-one scattered over the city, in which matters concerning the manifold phases of education were discussed. During the week of December 19, in conjunction with the big session of the Southern California teachers, eighteen other teacher institutes were held during the first three days of the week. At this time institutes of Imperial County, Los Angeles County, Riverside County, San Bernardino County, San Diego County, Santa Barbara County, Ventura County, Alhambra, Glendale, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Pasadena, Pomona Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Santa Barbara, and Santa Monica were in session. The brunt of carrying on this great session fell upon the officers of the Association. Working with President Albert F. Vandegrift were Vice President Kathleen D. Loly, head of the language department, Pasadena High School. Pasadena; Treasurer Ernest P. Branson, director of research, Long Beach city schools, Long Beach; Council Representatives Henry G.Clement, Superintendent of Schools, Redlands; Christine A. Jacobsen, Thirty-Seventh Street School, Los Angeles; Ex-officio A. R. Clifton, Superintendent of Schools, Monrovia, and Executive Secretary F. L. Thurston. Mr. Thurston, the executive secretary of the California Teachers Association, Southern Section, had the tremendous responsibility of getting the program printed. He had the job of seeing that fifty-two speakers were at their designated speaking places, which ran from Santa Barbara on the north to San Diego and El Centro two hundred and fifty miles to the south; from Santa Monica on the shore of the Pacific Ocean to San Bernardino and Riverside at the foot of snowclad mountains one hundred miles distant. Mr. Thurston is one of the most energetic of teacher association executives in the United States, and the smooth running of the mechanics of the convention was due to his able management. Among the speakers present were four from the University of Chicago. They were Doctor Charles H. Judd, director The School of Education; Doctor Henry C. Cowles, professor of botany; Doctor W. H. Burton, associate professor of education; Doctor Percy H. Boynton, professor of American literature. From Teachers College, Columbia University, there was present Doctor David Snedden, professor of education. From Northwestern University came Doctor Ralph Dennis, dean of the university. The University of Wisconsin was represented by Doctor Grant Showerman. From the University of Kansas came Doctor E. H. Lindley, the chancellor. From the University of Minnesota was Doctor F. J. Kelly, dean of administration. Indiana University was represented by Doctor H. L. Smith, dean of the School of Education. Two State Directors of Education were on the program from the two ends of the United States - William John Cooper, Director of Education for the S.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Western Journal of Education, Vol. 28: January, 1922; Featuring Los Angeles County and City Schools Mr. Bush feels that legislation will con tinne to be during the next year the most important feature before the California Teachers' Association, Southern Section. For sixteen years Mr. Bush has taught in the South Pasadena schools as instructor of the high school upon its founding, as vice-principal and finally as superintendent. For years he has been a strong member of the Los Angeles county board of education. He is quiet, unassuming, but one of the strongest leaders of the South. South Pasadena is a high-grade commun ity in which growth is rather stationary. Over one-half of the homes are without children, which is rather unique for a South ern California community. There is no foreign element in South Pasadena. For ten years there have been no negroes in the schools. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
