Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gleanings from the PSALMS is a message of meditation based on the Bible and written by James Russell Miller (20 March 1840 – 2 July 1912) was a popular Christian author, Editorial Superintendent of the Presbyterian Board of Publication, and pastor of several churches in Pennsylvania and Illinois. James Russell Miller was born near Frankfort Springs, Pennsylvania, on the banks of the Big Traverse, which according to his biographer, John T. Faris, is a merry little mill stream which drains one of the most beautiful valleys in the southern part of Beaver County. His parents were James Alexander Miller and Eleanor Creswell who were of Irish/Scottish stock. Miller was the second child of ten, but his older sister died before he was born. James and his sisters attended the district school in Hanover Township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania until, when James was about fourteen, his father moved to a farm near Calcutta, Ohio. The children then went to the district school during the short winters and worked on the farm during summer. In 1857, James entered Beaver Academy and in 1862 he progressed to Westminster College, Pennsylvania, which he graduated in June 1862. Then in the autumn of that year he entered the theological seminary of the United Presbyterian Church at Allegheny, Pennsylvania.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this inspiring work, you will learn how to discover peace, transformation, and divine solutions to your everyday problems through the creativity of the Buddha-nature in your heart. Quietly Comes the Buddha unfolds the story of Sumedha, the story of a soul becoming the Buddha, as it reveals his experiences during many lifetimes in the mastery of the “ten perfections,” or virtues, that lead to Buddhahood. It shows how you, too, can cultivate these qualities—these ten habits of highly effective Buddhas-to-be—as you walk your own spiritual path. This beautiful blend of prose and poetry, prayer and meditation also includes special sections of meditations on the heart for resolving con?icts and chakra meditations. “This devotional text, firmly grounded in Buddhism but reaching out to embrace other teachings, has the potential for awakening in the heart an ardent desire for enlightenment. It both comforts and challenges.” —Sonja Arntzen, scholar of Zen poetry and Japanese literature, author of Ikkyu and the Crazy Cloud Anthology and The Kagero Diary"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyday Christians need practical and accessible theology. In this handbook first published in 1890, Charles Octavius Boothe simply and beautifully lays out the basics of theology for common people. "Before the charge 'know thyself,'" Boothe wrote, "ought to come the far greater charge, 'know thy God.'" He brought the heights of academic theology down to everyday language, and he helps us do the same today. Plain Theology for Plain People shows that evangelicalism needs the wisdom and experience of African American Christians. Walter R. Strickland II reintroduces this forgotten masterpiece for today. Lexham Classics are beautifully typeset new editions of classic works. Each book has been carefully transcribed from the original texts, ensuring an accurate representation of the writing as the author intended it to be read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Consumption and the Literary Cookbook offers readers the first book-length study of literary cookbooks. Imagining the genre more broadly to include narratives laden with recipes, cookbooks based on cultural productions including films, plays, and television series, and cookbooks that reflected and/or shaped cultural and historical narratives, the contributors draw on the tools of literary and cultural studies to closely read a diverse corpus of cookbooks. By focusing on themes of consumption—gastronomical and rhetorical—the sixteen chapters utilize the recipes and the narratives surrounding them as lenses to study identity, society, history, and culture. The chapters in this book reflect the current popularity of foodie culture as they offer entertaining analyses of cookbooks, the stories they tell, and the stories told about them.
