Book excerpt: Characterization of the relationships between structure and properties of materials is based on the fundamental principle that the structure of the material be determined first, followed by assessments of which structural properties may govern their properties as a function of composition, pressure, temperature and other variables. Whereas this methodology has been successfully applied to further our understanding of crystalline materials, studies of silicate melt structure are often conducted on a somewhat different basis. Rather than from direct structural determination, structure models have been developed from assumed relationships between a specific melt property and its structure. As a result, a multitude of models has evolved - many of which are mutually exclusive. The overall scope of this book is to address properties and processes of magmatic systems from the vantage point of melt structure. To this end available data in chemically increasingly complex systems are reviewed and discussed with the ultimate goal being integration of the simple system data into a model that describes complex systems such as natural magmatic liquids. Thus the book evolves from the simplest possible system, SiO 2 , to complex systems such as natural magmatic liquids. From a petrologic point of view, sufficient data have been obtained so that a general framework of the structure of magmatic liquids is in place. This framework is based on the same principles as those of crystal chemistry, modulated by the absence of long range order in amorphous material, and systematic relationships between structure and properties can be discerned at least at atmospheric pressure.

The anomalous behavior includes acoustic velocities and elastic moduli that lack the positive correlation with density exhibited in crystalline silicates (Birch's Law) in addition to increasing compressibility on loading up to 2 - 6 GPa. Understanding the atomistic mechanism that underlies this anomalous behavior is critical for developing an equation of state for amorphous silicates, among these silicate melts in the Earth's crust and mantle. Determining the location and volume of silicate melts in the Earth requires constraints on the pressure, temperature and compositional range over which this anomalous behavior is active. In this dissertation I present results from two systems: 1) vitreous silica (v-SiO2) - the end-member for amorphous silicates - to provide insight into the source of the anomalous behavior, and 2) naturally occurring Columbia River basalt glass to determine the geologic application of the anomalous behavior. The results presented here focus on data from two recently developed techniques: high pressure X-ray microtomography and gigahertz-frequency ultrasonic interferometry to measure the volumetric and elastic properties, respectively. In Part I of this dissertation, I measure the volumetric and elastic properties of v-SiO2 glass at high pressures and room temperature to [1] determine the active densification mechanism that underlies the anomalous behavior on compression (Chapter 2), [2] constrain the role of polyamorphism for the high pressure behavior (Chapter 2), [3] determine the frequency dependence of the elastic properties (Chapter 3), and [4] investigate the role of buttressing atoms on modifying the elastic and volumetric properties of v-SiO2 (Chapter 3). In Part II, I measure the measure the volumetric and elastic properties of Columbia River basalt glass at high pressure and room temperature. The pressure dependence of the elastic properties of basalt glass violate Birch's law and cannot be modeled using equations of state developed for solid materials (Chapter 4). I show that [1] there is a systematic variation in compression behavior for silicate glasses at high pressure that is dependent on the degree of polymerization and arises from flexibility of the aluminosilicate network on compression (Chapter 4), [2] the flexibility of the aluminosilicate network will persists into the liquid state, resulting in P-wave velocities for silicate melts that are significantly less pressure dependent than previous modeled (Chapter 4), [3] recalculate the effect of melt fraction and geometry in reducing seismic velocities in the Earth's crust and mantle (Chapter 5), and [4] apply these results to reinterpreting the distribution and volume of melt at the lithosphere - asthenosphere boundary based on results for velocity reductions determined from recent seismic studies (Chapter 5).
