Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pennsylvania School Journal, 1873, Vol. 22 Many such children would become shining lights, and an honor to mankind; but leave them in their ignorance, and many of them will fill our jails and work-houses. To keep them there is a far greater expense, and the probabilities are far less that they will ever be Christians, than if you give them an education such as the State now affords them. But the system does not allow us to teach religion in any positive way! No. But it allows and even sanctions us to do a great deal that leads to positive religion. If that were all, we could also say that many Sunday-schools teach religion in no positive way. And yet we feel sure that Sunday-schools can be so conducted that they do teach religion. Shall we entirely abandon the great pet of America, be cause it fails in some hands and in some localities, to answer the end for which it was instituted? The remedy is in another direction. What is true of the Sunday-schools is, in this respect, largely true of the public schools. Place them in proper hands, and you will get good results. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Passionate Apprentice comprises the first years of Virginia Woolf's Journal - from 1879 to 1909. Beginning in early January, when Woolf was almost fifteen, the pages open at a time when she was slowly recovering from a period of madness following her mother's death in May 1895. Between this January and the autumn of 1904, Woolf would suffer the deaths of her half-sister and of her father, and survive a summer of madness and suicidal depression. Behind the loss and confusion, however, and always near the surface of her writing is a constructive force at work - a powerful impulse towards health. It was an urge, through writing, to bring order and continuity out of chaos. Putting things into words and giving them deliberate expression had the effect of restoring reality to much that might otherwise have remained insubstantial. This early chronicle represents the beginning of the future Virginia Woolf's apprenticeship as a novelist. These pages show that rare instance when a writer of great importance leaves behind not only the actual documents of an apprenticeship, but also a biographical record of that momentous period as well. In Woolf's words, 'Here is a volume of fairly acute life (the first really lived year of my life).'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This original book looks in detail at arguably the two most significant characters on either side in the middle years of the great Peloponnesian War and the showdown in and around Amphipolis that led to both their deaths in 422 BC.The Spartan commander Brasidas was already a veteran of many campaigns when he headed for the strategically important northern theatre. Cleon was the key hawk in the Athenian assembly who led his fellow citizens in a major effort to counter the impact that Brasidas was having in the north. The two finally clashed in battle outside the Athenian colony of Amphipolis which Brasidas had by then captured (the great historian Thucydides being exiled for his failure to defend it). The Spartans won but both men died in the fighting, their passing having far-reaching consequences for the subsequent course of the war. By focussing on the fatal duel between Brasidas and Cleon, and drawing on all available sources to supplement Thucydides' seminal account, Mike Roberts offers a valuable new perspective on the Peloponnesian War.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2011, the Middle East saw more people peacefully protesting long entrenched dictatorships than at any time in its history. The dictators of Tunisia, Egypt, and Yemen were deposed in a matter of weeks by nonviolent marches. Imprecisely described as 'the Arab Spring', the revolution has been convulsing the whole region ever since. Beyond an uneven course in different countries, Philosophy of Nonviolence examines how 2011 may have ushered in a fundamental break in world history. The break, the book argues, is animated by nonviolence as the new spirit of the philosophy of history. Philosophy of Nonviolence maps out a system articulating nonviolence in the revolution, the rule of constitutional law it yearns for, and the demand for accountability that inspired the revolution in the first place. Part One--Revolution, provides modern context to the generational revolt, probes the depth of Middle Eastern-Islamic humanism, and addresses the paradox posed by nonviolence to the 'perpetual peace' ideal. Part Two--Constitutionalism, explores the reconfiguration of legal norms and power structures, mechanisms of institutional change and constitution-making processes in pursuit of the nonviolent anima. Part Three--Justice, covers the broadening concept of dictatorship as crime against humanity, an essential part of the philosophy of nonviolence. It follows its frustrated emergence in the French revolution, its development in the Middle East since 1860 through the trials of Arab dictators, the pyramid of accountability post-dictatorship, and the scope of foreign intervention in nonviolent revolutions. Throughout the text, Professor Mallat maintains thoroughly abstract and philosophical arguments, while substantiating those arguments in historical context enriched by a close participation in the ongoing Middle East revolution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Lexicon of Greek Personal Names offers scholars a comprehensive listing of all named individuals from the ancient Greek-speaking world. The information needed has been compiled from all written sources, literary, epigraphical, papyrological, and numismatic, within a chronological range from the eighth century BC to approximately 600 AD; the geographical limits match the use of the Greek language in antiquity, from Asia Minor to the Western Mediterranean, the Black Sea to North Africa. With the present volume, LGPN moves into Asia Minor (modern Turkey), to the areas of Pontos, Bithynia, Mysia, the Troad, Aiolis, Ionia, and Lydia. Asia Minor is particularly interesting since it differs from most other regions covered so far in its ethnic and cultural diversity. Personal names are known in abundance from almost all cultures to be found in this area, and they therefore play a prominent role in the study of ethnicity and acculturation.
