Book excerpt: Excerpt from When I Come Back What sort of man would it be, then, who was capable of writing, from the Ar gonne in October, the odd sentence quoted above? A dull man, perhaps, doomed to pass unstirred through stupendous scenes? Or a dumb man seeing and feel ing much, it may be, but unequal even to attempting the swamps of exposition? Or perhaps this was a born soldier, one of that stark company who, frightened and unhappy in a drawing-room, find the natu ralness and ease of life released to them under the thunder of the guns? Or possibly, again, the quoted sentence is only a phrase, and other passages will pipe to a different tune? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Veteran: And His Pipe The demand for a second edition of this work allows no time for the correction of mere verbal errors. The essays herein con tained were written week by week during the year 1885, their char acter being determined by contemporaneous events. In a cursory review the author finds no reason to desire any substantial change. The convictions expressed in these pages have only been emphasized by subsequent events. Pascal Raines and Rans Whiting are types of the healthiest sentiment of the two great elements of yesterday. The sacrifice and heroism of the days of strife will have been worse than vain unless they shall teach wisdom, devotion to the right, an exalted sense of patriotic duty, and a righteous scorn of subterfuge, evasion and pretense in the direction of public affairs. Whatever may be the truth in regard to material things, civili zation is undoubtedly a revolution. Liberty is a plant whose petals open very slowly and whose perfect bloom the world has not yet seen. God gives us yesterday that we may make to-morrow better. The soldier who fought for Freedom and the Right did only his duty. He deserves no more credit than he who serves the country with like aspiration to-day. It is as an example of patriotic devotion, and not as a mere survivor of perilous times, that he deserves to be remembered. What he did may very well be forgotten. Why he did it is the priceless legacy he left for the betterment of tomorrow. W'henever the present fails to rise to thelevel of the past in patriotic aspiration, the future is in peril. Civil war in a republic is always the result of a lesson of patriotic purpose. The patriotism which saved the Union, if manifested before the outbreak of hostilities, would have made rebellion impossible. The apathy and indecision of the North, not less than the arrogance and aggressiveness of the South, were responsible for the bloody consequences. This is the lesson the story of yesterday's achievements should teach to every one of the controllers of to-morrow's destiny. The pages that lol low were written simply to enforce this thought. A wife? 0 yes, I had one; She kept my soul alive; And children, too, We had them, All angels they, - just five. We gloated on the prospect Of that domestic fold, Cause we'd have them to help us, When wife and I got old. They grow'd and crow'd and chippered, And laughed and played and cried; But home seemed broke and empty, When two took ill and died. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Veterans of Chelsea Hospital, Vol. 2 of 3 I sprang out of bed; and, running towards the mirror, beheld reflected there a spectacle which quite unmanned me. My coat was torn from the collar to the skirt; my epaulet was gone there was blood upon my face, which had run down so as to stain my very small-clothes, and a large black weal blocked up one of my eyes. Whatever indistinct ness of memory might have heretofore attached to me, was dispelled in an instant. I recollected all that had taken place over-night; and, in an agony of remorse, which amounted well-nigh to despair, I threw myself down upon the bed again, and groaned aloud. Children's voices, in every key Of joy and thanksgiving, sang the happy news from morning to night. The white, strained look faded from Mother's face, and she became her Old, bright self again. Now that they were over, the Children tried to forget how long and sad and weary the days had been during which the Sight Of the post bag, and the morning newspaper, almost took everyone's breath away, until the columns of War news had been hastily scanned before taking letters and papers to Mother's room. Then came the day when Uncle Howard's name was amongst the seriously wounded, and there was a brief account Of how he had saved the guns, and then returning into the firing line to pick up a wounded soldier, had himself been dangerously wounded. The children thought of Uncle Howard's delicate young motherless boy, and sobbed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work.
