Book Synopsis Medicine Ways by : Clifford E. Trafzer
Download or read book Medicine Ways written by Clifford E. Trafzer and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2001 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Native cultures, health is often expressed as a balance between body, mind, and spirit or soul. At a philosophical level, physical wellness is related to cultural, political, and economic well-being. This is a philosophy that is frequently ignored, however, in theoretical perspectives and applied programs that attempt to address Native American health problems. This collection of essays examines the ways people from many indigenous communities think about and practice health care within historical and sociocultural contexts. Chapters explore solutions to the prevalence of medically identified diseases, such as cancer and diabetes, as well as Native-identified problems, such as forced evacuation, assimilation, and poverty. Book Synopsis Feminism, Nation and Myth by : Rolando Romero
Download or read book Feminism, Nation and Myth written by Rolando Romero and published by Arte Publico Press. This book was released on 2005-04-30 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feminism, Nation and Myth explores the scholarship of La Malinche, the indigenous woman who is said to have led Cortés and his troops to the Aztec city of Tenochtitlán. The figure of La Malinche has generated intense debate among literature and cultural studies scholars. Drawing from the humanities and the social sciences, feminist studies, queer studies, Chicana/o studies, and Latina/o studies, critics and theorists in this volume analyze the interaction and interdependence of race, class, and gender. Studies of La Malinche demand that scholars disassemble and reconstruct concepts of nation, community, agency, subjectivity, and social activism. This volume originated in the 1999 "U.S. Latina/Latino Perspectives on la Malinche" conference that brought together scholars from across the nation. Filmmaker Dan Banda interviewed many of the presenters for his documentary, Indigenous Always: The Legend of La Malinche and the Conquest of Mexico. Contributors include Alfred Arteaga, Antonia Castañeda, Debra Castillo, Alicia Gaspar de Alba, Deena González, María Herrera Sobek, Guisela Latorre, Luis Leal, Sandra Messinger Cypess, Franco Mondini-Ruiz, Amanda Nolacea Harris, Rolando J. Romero, and Tere Romo. These academic essays are complemented by the creative work of Alicia Gaspar de Alba and José Emilio Pacheco, both of whom evoke the figure of La Malinche in their work.
Book Synopsis Women in Prehistory by : Cheryl Claassen
Download or read book Women in Prehistory written by Cheryl Claassen and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1960s, scholars constructed a model of cultural evolution in which men cooperated in the hunting of big game while women gathered plant food, "immobilized" by pregnancy and childcare. The essays in Women in Prehistory challenge this model as they reconsider women's social and economic roles.
Book Synopsis Archaeologies of Sexuality by : Robert A. Schmidt
Download or read book Archaeologies of Sexuality written by Robert A. Schmidt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-06-28 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Status, age and gender have long been accepted aspects of archaeological enquiry, yet it is only recently that archaeologists have started seriously to consider the role of sex and sexuality in their studies. Archaeologies of Sexuality is a timely and pioneering work. It presents a strong, diverse body of scholarship which draws on locations as varied as medieval England, the ancient Maya kingdoms, New Kingdom Egypt, prehistoric Europe, and convict-era Australia, demonstrating the challenges and rewards of integrating the study of sex and sexuality within archaeology. This volume, with contributions by many leading archaeologists, will serve both as an essential introduction and a valuable reference tool for students and academics.
