Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Varieties of Joycean Experience is a collection of ten essays that display the wide range and diversity of perspectives and critical approaches that can be drawn upon to enrich our readings of James Joyce’s works. With special attention to Ulysses and Finnegans Wake, these essays explore such problems as the difficulties these books pose to categories and summaries and our understanding of Joyce’s composition methods. The book explores Joyce’s ambiguities around death, scatology, and the weather to propose new understandings of these phenomena as key ways into Joyce’s works. The book concludes with an examination of the tricky problem: what makes an interpretation untenable, and why do Joyce’s works inspire far-fetched and even crackpot readings?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a cultural criticism that analyzes the politics, art, fashion, and constructions of the body inscribed and transcribed in the Joycean text. The essays illustrate the dynamic interaction of art, culture, and criticism. They simultaneously explore the impact that Joyce's own culture, both high and low, had on his art, while assessing Joyce's reciprocal influence on our own contemporary culture. Following the paths of a long and pluralistic tradition of Joyce criticism, the new methodologies in this volume create, or culture, a new Joyce for the nineties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Joyce Studies indicates the variety and energy of research on James Joyce since the year 2000. Essays examine Joyce's works and their reception in the light of a larger set of concerns: a diverse international terrain of scholarly modes and methodologies, an imperilled environment, and crises of racial justice, to name just a few. This is a Joyce studies that dissolves early visions of Joyce as a sui generis genius by reconstructing his indebtedness to specific literary communities. It models ways of integrating masses of compositional and publication details with literary and historical events. It develops hybrid critical approaches from posthuman, medical, and queer methodologies. It analyzes the nature and consequences of its extension from Ireland to mainland Europe, and to Africa and Latin America. Examining issues of copyright law, translation, and the history of literary institutions, this volume seeks to use Joyce's canonical centrality to inform modernist studies more broadly.

Book excerpt: The Journal of Joyce Carol Oates, edited by Greg Johnson, offers a rare glimpse into the private thoughts of this extraordinary writer, focusing on excerpts written during one of the most productive decades of Oates's long career. Far more than just a daily account of a writer's writing life, these intimate, unrevised pages candidly explore her friendship with other writers, including John Updike, Donald Barthelme, Susan Sontag, Gail Godwin, and Philip Roth. It presents a fascinating portrait of the artist as a young woman, fully engaged with her world and her culture, on her way to becoming one of the most respected, honored, discussed, and controversial figures in American letters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Butler Yeats has been long considered the standard by which all Irish poetry is judged. Even the best of his immediate successors could not be liberated from Yeats's influence. In a new edition of his groundbreaking work, Dillon Johnston elaborates on the premise that many of Ireland's new voices do not follow the Yeatsian model—the singular lyric or odic voice; rather, they rely on Joyce for an interplay of dramatic voices. Johnston describes the world that contemporary poets have inherited: the legacies of Yeats and Joyce, the conflict of Unionism and Nationalism, the Irish language itself, and the politics of literature after World War II. He then explores the poetry of successors to both Yeats and Joyce. Austin Clarke is paired with Thomas Kinsella, Patrick Kavanagh with Seamus Heaney, Denis Devlin with John Montague, and Louis MacNeice with Derek Mahon. This edition, encompassing major poets of the last fifty-five years, includes the work of Paul Muldoon, Richard Murphy, Eavan Boland, Medbh McGuckian, and Eilean Ni Chuilleanain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7, University of Regensburg (Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistik ), course: Hauptseminar: James Joyce, 4 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The concept of transcendence is generally defined as the antonym of the notion of immanence. The material entities that are tangible and perceivable by the human senses are considered to form part of immanence, whereas transcendence is attributed to the divine and celestial spheres that elude the possibility to be grasped and handled in a way material objects can be dealt with. Owing to the fact that the two concepts of immanence and transcendence are considered to be poles apart, it is uncertain whether they are compatible with each other despite their antonymity. If the yawing gap between them should be reconcilable, this act of linking can only take place by means of a bridging relation of the complementary. An analogy to this would be the complementary relationship between allopathic and homeopathic remedies: allopathic pills are composed of chemical substances whose existence can easily be verified in a laboratory, whereas homeopathic tablets do not contain the physical substance of the respective herbs, metals or even venoms, but on the contrary the respective energetic correlate of them that eludes scientific methods of verification. Accepting the possibility of being cured by homeopathy is tantamount to embracing the existence of transcendence. By means of this comparison I seek to highlight that there must be mutual intermingling between the seemingly disparate antonyms of immanence and transcendence, owing to the fact that transcendence needs a material vehicle as a solid fundament in order to function and in order to be perceived by human beings.

Together they seek to redress the tendency of some recent critics to regard Ulysses as a compendium of techniques or a treatise.
