Book excerpt: Cassiodorus—famed throughout history as one of the great Christian exegetes of antiquity—spent most of his life as a high-ranking public official under the Ostrogothic King Theoderic and his heirs. He produced the Variae, a unique letter collection that gave witness to the sixth-century Mediterranean, as late antiquity gave way to the early middle ages. The Variae represents thirty years of Cassiodorus’s work in civil, legal, and financial administration, revealing his interactions with emperors and kings, bishops and military commanders, private citizens, and even criminals. Thus, the Variae remains among the most important sources for the history of this pivotal period and is an indispensable resource for understanding political and diplomatic culture, economic and legal structure, intellectual heritage, urban landscapes, religious worldview, and the evolution of social relations at all levels of society during the twilight of the late-Roman state. This is the first full translation of this masterwork into English.

Book excerpt: Founded in 1911, the AAVSO boasts over 1200 members and observers and is the world's largest non-profit organization dedicated to variable star observation. This timely book marks the AAVSO's centennial year, presenting an authoritative and accurate history of this important association. Writing in an engaging and accessible style, the authors move chronologically through five eras of the AAVSO, discussing the evolution of its structure and purpose. Throughout the text, the main focus is on the thousands of individuals whose contributions have made the AAVSO's progress possible. Describing a century of interaction between amateur and professional astronomers, the authors celebrate the collaborative relationships that have existed over the years. As the definitive history of the first hundred years of the AAVSO, this text has broad appeal and will be of interest to amateur and professional astronomers, as well as historians and sociologists of science in general.

When the serial killer known as Dr. Fear seemingly reemerges after a cooling-off period, Special Agent Lincoln Monroe wants on the case. He knows his research on the calculating criminal, who targets couples and uses their worst fears to kill them, could prove invaluable. But nothing can prepare Lincoln for the agent waiting for him in Apex, Virginia: a brash and cocky former student. Carter Warren is everything Lincoln is not, and somehow everything he wants. And they’ll be going undercover. As newlyweds. For Carter, seeing Lincoln again—and flustered to boot—pokes his raging bear of a crush something fierce. He thinks posing as lovers will provide the perfect bait for Dr. Fear. But pretending to be married forces them to confront fears of their own...like giving in to the very real chemistry between them. With evidence pointing to the possibility of a copycat killer, Lincoln and Carter will have to race to separate truth from fiction. Book excerpt: A never-before-published masterpiece from science fiction's greatest writer, rediscovered after more than half a century. When Joel Johnston first met Jinny Hamilton, it seemed like a dream come true. And when she finally agreed to marry him, he felt like the luckiest man in the universe. There was just one small problem. He was broke. His only goal in life was to become a composer, and he knew it would take years before he was earning enough to support a family. But Jinny wasn't willing to wait. And when Joel asked her what they were going to do for money, she gave him a most unexpected answer. She told him that her name wasn't really Jinny Hamilton---it was Jinny Conrad, and she was the granddaughter of Richard Conrad, the wealthiest man in the solar system. And now that she was sure that Joel loved her for herself, not for her wealth, she revealed her family's plans for him---he would be groomed for a place in the vast Conrad empire and sire a dynasty to carry on the family business. Most men would have jumped at the opportunity. But Joel Johnston wasn't most men. To Jinny's surprise, and even his own, he turned down her generous offer and then set off on the mother of all benders. And woke up on a colony ship heading out into space, torn between regret over his rash decision and his determination to forget Jinny and make a life for himself among the stars. He was on his way to succeeding when his plans--and the plans of billions of others--were shattered by a cosmic cataclysm so devastating it would take all of humanity's strength and ingenuity just to survive. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results are presented on drag tests of six bodies of revolution with systematically varying shapes and with a fineness ratio of 5. The formes were derived from source-sink distributions, and formulas are presented for the calculation of the pressure distributions of the forms. The tests were made in the N.A.C.A. variable-density tunnel over a range of values of Reynolds number from about 1,500,000 to 25,000,000. The results show that the bodies with the sharper noses and tails have the lowest drag coefficients are based on the two-thirds power of the volume. The data show the most important single characteristic of the body form to be the tail angle, which must be fine to obtain low drag.

Book excerpt: Periphyton, an algal assemblage which surrounds the submerged parts of higher plants and in some cases covers the bottom like a blanket, is one of the most conspicuous features of South Florida's shallow-water ecoystems--such as found within Everglades National Park. The authors conducted a study of the periphyton in Everglades National Park and the East Everglades 208 study area to: provide a quantitative description of the gross taxonomic composition of periphyton in various aquatic habitats; determine whether statistically significant differences in taxonomic composition between sites can be documented; relate variation in periphyton taxonomic composition to variation in environmental variables; and evaluate the relative potential value of various periphyton taxonomic compositions as a food source.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was first published in 2007. Variable stars are those that change brightness. Their variability may be due to geometric processes such as rotation, or eclipse by a companion star, or physical processes such as vibration, flares, or cataclysmic explosions. In each case, variable stars provide unique information about the properties of stars, and the processes that go on within them. This book provides a concise overview of variable stars, including a historical perspective, an introduction to stars in general, the techniques for discovering and studying variable stars, and a description of the main types of variable stars. It ends with short reflections about the connection between the study of variable stars, and research, education, amateur astronomy, and public interest in astronomy. This book is intended for anyone with some background knowledge of astronomy, but is especially suitable for undergraduate students and experienced amateur astronomers who can contribute to our understanding of these important stars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Real-Variable Methods in Harmonic Analysis deals with the unity of several areas in harmonic analysis, with emphasis on real-variable methods. Active areas of research in this field are discussed, from the Calderón-Zygmund theory of singular integral operators to the Muckenhoupt theory of Ap weights and the Burkholder-Gundy theory of good ? inequalities. The Calderón theory of commutators is also considered. Comprised of 17 chapters, this volume begins with an introduction to the pointwise convergence of Fourier series of functions, followed by an analysis of Cesàro summability. The discussion then turns to norm convergence; the basic working principles of harmonic analysis, centered around the Calderón-Zygmund decomposition of locally integrable functions; and fractional integration. Subsequent chapters deal with harmonic and subharmonic functions; oscillation of functions; the Muckenhoupt theory of Ap weights; and elliptic equations in divergence form. The book also explores the essentials of the Calderón-Zygmund theory of singular integral operators; the good ? inequalities of Burkholder-Gundy; the Fefferman-Stein theory of Hardy spaces of several real variables; Carleson measures; and Cauchy integrals on Lipschitz curves. The final chapter presents the solution to the Dirichlet and Neumann problems on C1-domains by means of the layer potential methods. This monograph is intended for graduate students with varied backgrounds and interests, ranging from operator theory to partial differential equations.
