Book Synopsis Performance Analysis of Closed Queueing Networks by : Svenja Lagershausen
Download or read book Performance Analysis of Closed Queueing Networks written by Svenja Lagershausen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-10-24 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the performance analysis of closed queueing networks with general processing times and finite buffer spaces. It offers a detailed introduction to the problem and a comprehensive literature review. Two approaches to the performance of closed queueing networks are presented. One is an approximate decomposition approach, while the second is the first exact approach for finite-capacity networks with general processing times. In this Markov chain approach, queueing networks are analyzed by modeling the entire system as one Markov chain. As this approach is exact, it is well-suited both as a reference quantity for approximate procedures and as extension to other queueing networks. Moreover, for the first time, the exact distribution of the time between processing starts is provided.

Book Synopsis Dynamic Stochastic Optimization by : Kurt Marti
Download or read book Dynamic Stochastic Optimization written by Kurt Marti and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncertainties and changes are pervasive characteristics of modern systems involving interactions between humans, economics, nature and technology. These systems are often too complex to allow for precise evaluations and, as a result, the lack of proper management (control) may create significant risks. In order to develop robust strategies we need approaches which explic itly deal with uncertainties, risks and changing conditions. One rather general approach is to characterize (explicitly or implicitly) uncertainties by objec tive or subjective probabilities (measures of confidence or belief). This leads us to stochastic optimization problems which can rarely be solved by using the standard deterministic optimization and optimal control methods. In the stochastic optimization the accent is on problems with a large number of deci sion and random variables, and consequently the focus ofattention is directed to efficient solution procedures rather than to (analytical) closed-form solu tions. Objective and constraint functions of dynamic stochastic optimization problems have the form of multidimensional integrals of rather involved in that may have a nonsmooth and even discontinuous character - the tegrands typical situation for "hit-or-miss" type of decision making problems involving irreversibility ofdecisions or/and abrupt changes ofthe system. In general, the exact evaluation of such functions (as is assumed in the standard optimization and control theory) is practically impossible. Also, the problem does not often possess the separability properties that allow to derive the standard in control theory recursive (Bellman) equations.

Book Synopsis 7th UK Computer and Telecommunications Performance Engineering Workshop by : Jane E. Hillston
Download or read book 7th UK Computer and Telecommunications Performance Engineering Workshop written by Jane E. Hillston and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performance engineering is a fast-moving field where advances in technology mean that new issues constantly need to be addressed. In response to this, the UK Computer and Telecommunications Performance Engineering workshops were set up in 1985 to provide a valuable opportunity for the discussion and exchange of ideas. They have subsequently become well established as the focus for academic and industrial practitioners from the UK and Europe with an interest in performance and modelling and analysis. This volume contains the 16 papers which were presented at the 7th annual workshop, held in Edinburgh in July 1991. The workshop highlighted various aspects of parallel computing - an area which is attracting an increasing amount of interest - and the work presented in these papers is of particular interest as the contributors used real analysis to evaluate their models. The papers cover an unusually wide range of topics, both practical and theoretical, including advances in queueing theory, common performance problems and their solutions, assessments of available tools and presentations of new theoretical results. The result is an extremely comprehensive coverage of this important and challenging field. This volume provides an up-to-date assessment of work being carried out by performance engineers in the UK and Europe and will be an invaluable reference book for researchers and practitioners wishing to familiarise themselves with the benefits of performance and analysis.

Book Synopsis Concurrent Engineering Techniques and Applications by : C. T. Leondes
Download or read book Concurrent Engineering Techniques and Applications written by C. T. Leondes and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concurrent Engineering Techniques and Applications reviews advances in concurrent engineering techniques and applications. An in-depth treatment of the quantitative and economic aspects of concurrent engineering is presented, with emphasis on techniques for measuring the performances of concurrent engineering and for comparing its economic effectiveness with that of traditional engineering. Open systems software standards in concurrent engineering are also discussed. Comprised of 12 chapters, this volume begins with an introduction to techniques for measuring the performances of concurrent engineering and for comparing its economic effectiveness with that of traditional engineering. The next chapter deals with open systems software standards and how to use open systems products effectively in concurrent engineering. The discussion then turns to concurrent product design and manufacturing; the essential issues involved in design-decision support in concurrent/simultaneous engineering; design for manufacturing and assembly and concurrent engineering in electro-optical systems; and the use of visualization in concurrent engineering. The use of multimedia presentation techniques and technology in the concurrent engineering process is also considered, along with techniques in technical documentation. This monograph will be useful to students, academicians, practicing professionals, and research workers.
