Book Synopsis U. S. Role in the World by : Michael Moodie
Download or read book U. S. Role in the World written by Michael Moodie and published by . This book was released on 2019-09-14 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. role in the world refers to the overall character, purpose, or direction of U.S. participation in international affairs and the country's overall relationship to the rest of the world. The U.S. role in the world can be viewed as establishing the overall context or framework for U.S. policymakers for developing, implementing, and measuring the success of U.S. policies and actions on specific international issues, and for foreign countries or other observers for interpreting and understanding U.S. actions on the world stage. While descriptions of the U.S. role in the world since the end of World War II vary in their specifics, it can be described in general terms as consisting of four key elements: global leadership; defense and promotion of the liberal international order; defense and promotion of freedom, democracy, and human rights; and prevention of the emergence of regional hegemons in Eurasia. The issue for Congress is whether the U.S. role in the world is changing, and if so, what implications this might have for the United States and the world. A change in the U.S. role could have significant and even profound effects on U.S. security, freedom, and prosperity. It could significantly affect U.S. policy in areas such as relations with allies and other countries, defense plans and programs, trade and international finance, foreign assistance, and human rights. Some observers, particularly critics of the Trump Administration, argue that under the Trump Administration, the United States is substantially changing the U.S. role in the world. Other observers, particularly supporters of the Trump Administration, while acknowledging that the Trump Administration has changed U.S. foreign policy in a number of areas compared to policies pursued by the Obama Administration, argue that under the Trump Administration, there has been less change and more continuity regarding the U.S. role in the world. Some observers who assess that the United States under the Trump Administration is substantially changing the U.S. role in the world-particularly critics of the Trump Administration, and also some who were critical of the Obama Administration-view the implications of that change as undesirable. They view the change as an unnecessary retreat from U.S. global leadership and a gratuitous discarding of long-held U.S. values, and judge it to be an unforced error of immense proportions-a needless and self-defeating squandering of something of great value to the United States that the United States had worked to build and maintain for 70 years. Other observers who assess that there has been a change in the U.S. role in the world in recent years-particularly supporters of the Trump Administration, but also some observers who were arguing even prior to the Trump Administration in favor of a more restrained U.S. role in the world-view the change in the U.S. role, or at least certain aspects of it, as helpful for responding to changed U.S. and global circumstances and for defending U.S. interests. Congress's decisions regarding the U.S role in the world could have significant implications for numerous policies, plans, programs, and budgets, and for the role of Congress relative to that of the executive branch in U.S. foreign policymaking.

Book Synopsis Political Economy and the Changing Global Order by : Richard Stubbs
Download or read book Political Economy and the Changing Global Order written by Richard Stubbs and published by Don Mills, Ont. : Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'How will global order unfold as we move into the next millennium?' With this basic question as a starting point, leading scholars in politics, economics, and international relations from ten different countries have written 33 chapters specially commissioned for this new second edition, which also includes introductory essays by the editors. Rapid change has become the norm in the international political economy. The relatively strong and surprisingly sustained performance of the NorthAmerican economies, the growing economic integration of the European Union, and the economic crises in Asia and Russia all attest to the increasing pace and apparent unpredictability of changes to the global economy. Political Economy and the Changing Global Order provides an authoritative introduction to these changes and to the theory and changing practice of international economic relations as the world enters the new millennium. The book ranges widely, covering developments at global, regional, and national levels, key issues and trends, and the changing policies of major state actors, as well as presenting a broad spectrum of theoretical perspectives. Particular emphasis is given to the role of the state in the international political economy, the increasing importance of non-state actors, and the growing influence of both public and private forms of transnational governance.

Book Synopsis Paradoxes of Power by : David Skidmore
Download or read book Paradoxes of Power written by David Skidmore and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-03 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a lively and readable introduction to current debates over U.S. power and purpose in world affairs. The end of the Cold War launched a new era in U.S. foreign policy. The United States entered a period of unprecedented global power, but one also characterized by new conflicts, challenges, and controversies. The terrorist attacks of 9/11 and the subsequent U.S. military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq cast a spotlight on continuing debates over how the United States should best use its considerable international power to secure safety for Americans and stability in the world. These debates involve two crucial questions: Should U.S. foreign policy focus on securing vital interests that are narrowly defined, or should the United States seek to spread U.S. institutions and values to other societies? Should the United States exercise maximum independence in the exercise of U.S. power abroad or work principally through multilateral institutions? This book brings together many different voices to answer these questions and to add to our understanding of the issues. Contributors include: Andrew J. Bacevich, Max Boot, Stephen G. Brooks, Ralph G. Carter, Robert F. Ellsworth, Niall Ferguson, Francis Fukuyama, Philip H. Gordon, Christopher Hitchens, James F. Hoge Jr., Michael Ignatieff, G. John Ikenberry, John B. Book Synopsis Global Political Economy by : Robert G. Gilpin
Download or read book Global Political Economy written by Robert G. Gilpin and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2011-08-29 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the eagerly awaited successor to Robert Gilpin's 1987 The Political Economy of International Relations, the classic statement of the field of international political economy that continues to command the attention of students, researchers, and policymakers. The world economy and political system have changed dramatically since the 1987 book was published. The end of the Cold War has unleashed new economic and political forces, and new regionalisms have emerged. Computing power is increasingly an impetus to the world economy, and technological developments have changed and are changing almost every aspect of contemporary economic affairs. Gilpin's Global Political Economy considers each of these developments. Reflecting a lifetime of scholarship, it offers a masterful survey of the approaches that have been used to understand international economic relations and the problems faced in the new economy. Gilpin focuses on the powerful economic, political, and technological forces that have transformed the world. He gives particular attention to economic globalization, its real and alleged implications for economic affairs, and the degree to which its nature, extent, and significance have been exaggerated and misunderstood. Moreover, he demonstrates that national policies and domestic economies remain the most critical determinants of economic affairs. The book also stresses the importance of economic regionalism, multinational corporations, and financial upheavals. Gilpin integrates economic and political analysis in his discussion of "global political economy." He employs the conventional theory of international trade, insights from the theory of industrial organization, and endogenous growth theory. In addition, ideas from political science, history, and other disciplines are employed to enrich understanding of the new international economic order. This wide-ranging book is destined to become a landmark in the field.

Download or read book The U.S. Role in a Changing World written by Choices Program and published by . This book was released on 2021-12 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the first days of the republic, people in the United States have debated how to balance priorities at home with their country's involvement in international affairs. Today, the United States is considering its domestic needs and reassessing its international relationships. An array of economic, political, and social transformations are taking place both at home and abroad. For example, how should the United States address climate change? Nuclear weapons? Poverty and inequality? Consensus about how to address these issues is hard to achieve. Nevertheless, a healthy democracy requires debate and discussion about the values and policies that shape the United States' place in the world. The U.S. Role in a Changing World helps students identify global issues, assess national priorities, and decide for themselves the role the United States should play in the world. www.choices.edu
Book Synopsis Trade Policy in a Changing World Economy by : Robert E. Baldwin
Download or read book Trade Policy in a Changing World Economy written by Robert E. Baldwin and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trade policy issues are no longer solely the concern of a few government specialists and academics. Manufacturers, businesspeople, educators, and government officials must keep abreast of laws and regulations relating to trade, the economic consequences of various trade measures, and current trends in policy, but there have been few coherent sources for such information. Trade Policy in a Changing World Economy provides a clear introduction to complex trade issues, covering theoretical issues of trade policy, the changing nature of American trade policy, the changing nature of American trade policy since World War II, multilateral trade negotiations, and trade strategies. The volume is particularly timely as the world's nations enter a new round of GATT negotiations for the reduction of trade barriers.
