Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Upton Letters These letters were returned to me, shortly after the death of the friend to whom they were written, by his widow. It seems that he had been sorting and destroying letters and papers a few days before his wholly unexpected end. "We won't destroy these," he had said to her, holding the bulky packet of my letters in his hand; "we will keep them together. T - ought to publish them, and, some day, I hope he will." This was not, of course, a deliberate judgment; but his sudden death, a few days later, gives the unconsidered wish a certain sanctity, and I have determined to obey it. Moreover, she who has the best right to decide, desires it. A few merely personal matters and casual details have been omitted; but the main substance is there, and the letters are just as they were written. Such hurried compositions, of course, about in literary shortcomings, but perhaps they have a certain spontaneity which more deliberate writings do not always possess. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From the East I got off very comfortably, two brothers and a sister accompanying me to the ship, and two other brothers as far as Liverpool Street. There are two girls in the cabin with me, one leaves at Naples, when Mrs. Dimple comes on board. One of the girls, a Miss Rawlings, seems very friendly. We have been walking up and down on deck together. She has introduced me to the doctor, and to another man she knows. We have had lunch, a great spread, with funny little brown waiters to look after you. We are going down the river, now, so it is quite smooth, and I hope it will be when we get outside. Arthur introduced me to the purser, who seems to be an even more important person than the captain. Everything seems to be very comfortable, and I think I shall get on very well. I don't feel at all lonely, so far. Please give my love to every one. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Unaddressed Letters The writer was, by trade, a diplomatist by inclination, a sportsman with literary and artistic tastes; by force of circumstances he was a student of many characters, and in some sense a cynic. He was also a traveller - not a great traveller, but he knew a good deal of Europe, a little of America, much of India and the further East. He spent some time in this neighbourhood, and was much interested in the country and its people. There is an Eastern atmosphere about many of the letters, and he made no secret of the fact that he was fascinated by the glamour of the lands of sunshine. He died very suddenly by misadventure, and, even to me, his packet of letters came rather as a revelation.
