Book excerpt: Excerpt from North America, Vol. 1 IT has been the ambition of my literary life to write a book about the United States, and I had made up my mind to visit the country with this object before the intestine troubles of the United States government had commenced. I have not allowed the division among the States and the breaking out of civil war to interfere with my intention; but I should not purposely have chosen this period either for my book or for my visit. I say so much, in order that it may not be supposed that it is my special purpose to write an account of the struggle as far as it has yet been carried. My wish 1s to describe, as well as I can, the present social and political state of the country. This I should have at tempted, with more personal satisfaction in the work, had there been no disruption between the North and South; but I have not allowed that disruption to deter me from an oh jcet which, if it were delayed, might probably neve1 be car ried out. I am therefore forced to take the subject in its p1esent condition, and being so forced I must write of the war, of the causes which have led to it, and of its probable termination. But I wish it to be understood that it was not my selected task to do so, and is not now my primary object. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the United States of North America, Vol. 3: From the Discovery of the Western World to the Present Day Undoubtedly, the case of the Essex J unto against the Administration, respecting this arrangement, was a strong one. The instructions sent to Erskine were shown to the American minister at London, in extenso, and it is hardly to be supposed that he could have failed to communicate their contents to the government at Washington. And on the other hand, if Madison and his Secretary were actually ignorant on this point, no good excuse can be presented for them - they ought to have known the extent of the minister's powers before they entered upon the negotiation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from North America, Vol. 1 of 2 Thirty years ago my mother wrote a book about the Americans, to which I believe I may allude as a well known and successful work without being guilty of any undue family conceit. That was essentially a woman's book. She Saw with a woman's keen eye, and described with a woman's light but graphic pen, the social defects and absurdities which our near relatives had adopted into their domestic life. All that she told was worth the telling, and the telling, if done successfully, was sure to produce a good result. I am satisfied that it did so. But she did not regard it as a part of her work to dilate on the nature and operation of those political arrangements which had produced the social absurdities which She saw, or to explain that though such absurdities were the, natural result of those arrangements in their newness, the defects would certainly pass away, while the political arrangements, if good, would remain. Such a work is fitter for a man than for a woman. I am very far from thinking that it is a task which I can perform with satisfaction either to myself or to others. It is a work which some man will do who has earned a right by education, Study, and success to rank himself among the political sages of his age. But I may perhaps be able to add something to the familiarity of. Englishmen with Americans. The writings which have been most popular in England on the subject of the United States have hitherto dealt chiefly with social details; and though in most cases true and useful. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the United States of North America, From the Plantation of the British Colonies Till Their Assumption of National Independence, Vol. 1 of 2 In December, 1842, the undersigned was appointed by the Massachusetts Historical Society "to prepare a Memoir of Mr. Grahame, the historian of the United States," who had been one of its corresponding members. In fulfilment of that duty, he entered into a correspondence with Mr. Grahame's family and European friends, in the course of which he learned that Mr. Grahame had left, at his death, a corrected and enlarged copy of his "History of the United States of North America," and had expressed, among his last wishes, an earnest hope that it might be published in the form which it had finally assumed under his hand. This information having been communicated to Mr. Justice Story, Messrs. James Savage, Jared Sparks, and William H. Prescott, they concurred in the opinion, that it "scarcely comported with American feelings, interest, or self-respect to permit a work of so much laborious research and merit, written in a faithful and elevated spirit, and relating to our own history, to want an American edition, embracing the last additions and corrections of its deceased author." Influenced by considerations of this kind, those gentlemen, in connection with the undersigned, undertook the office of promoting and superintending the publication of the work in its enlarged and amended form. A copy, prepared from that left by the author, was accordingly placed at their disposal by his son, Robert Grahame, Esq.; who subsequently transmitted the original, also, to be deposited in the library of Harvard University. The supervision of the work, during its progress through the press, devolved on the undersigned, - a charge which he has executed with as thorough fidelity to Mr. Grahame and the public as its nature and his official engagements have permitted. A wish having been intimated by the son of Mr. Grahame, that the Memoir, prepared at the request of the Massachusetts Historical Society, should be prefixed to the American edition of the History, it has been acceded to. The principal materials for this Memoir - consisting of extracts from Mr. Grahame's diary and correspondence, accompanied by interesting 'notices of his sentiments and character - were furnished by his highly accomplished widow, his son-in-law, John Stewart, Esq., and his friend, Sir John F. W. Herschel, Bart., who had maintained with him from early youth an uninterrupted intimacy. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the United States of America, Vol. 1 I have devoted much space to the life of the people, - their habits, modes of life, occupations, general progress, and the like, especially in the earlier period when they differed most widely from ourselves. But in treating the national period I have, however, without neglecting the industrial and social features, given greater space to political and constitutional development, as in this the life of a people who govern them selves is epitomized. In my treatment Of wars and disputes with foreign powers, I am aware that, with all my effort to view a subject from a neutral, judicial standpoint, an unconscious bias may be discerned; but should the work find any foreign readers, I beg them to remember that I have written absolutely sine ira. In treating the Civil War and the great events that led to it, I have taken the utmost care to be fair to both sides; though as a native and resident of the North I no doubt partake of the prejudice of my section, if such prejudice can still be said to exist. I have refrained from using the terms rebel and traitor to designate those who rose against the government in the sixties, because Of my profound re spect for their sincerity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Statistical, Political, and Historical Account of the United States of North America, Vol. 1: From the Period of Their First Colonization to the Present Day The Alleghany chain is more remarkable for its length and breadth than its height. Perhaps there is no tract of country in the world, that preserves the mountain character over so great a space, with so small an elevation. The mean height of the Alleg hanies Proper, is only from 2000 to 8000 feet, about one-half of which consists of the elevation of the mountains above their base and the other half, of the elevation of the adjoining country above the sea. To this height, the country rises by an irregular but al most imperceptible acclivity, from the ocean, at the distance of qoo or 800 miles on the one side, and from the channel of the Mississippi, at an equal distance, and by a still more gentle acclivity, on the other. A gra dual elevation of i 1000 or iqoo feet, upon a horizon tal surface of qoq or 800 miles, would give the sur face of the country, on the eastern side, an average rise of from three to four feet in the mile, and from two to three feet on the Western side, making allow ance for; the height of the channel of the Mississippi. This small degree of inclination accounts for the great extent of inland navigation which the United States enjoy. Besides, the beds of the rivers are generally lower than the country near-their banks, and their winding course also lessens the rapidity of their 'deu scent. In the northern parts of the Unionyhowever. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Second Visit to the United States of North America, Vol. 1 of 2 To account for'the toleration prevailing in New England and the states chie y peopled from thence, we must refer to a com bination of many favorable circumstances, some of them of ancient date, and derived from the times of the first Puritan settlers. To these I shall have many opportunities of alluding in the sequel but I shall mention now a more modern cause, the effect of which was brought vividly before my mind, in conversations with sev eral lawyers of Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts, whom I fell in with on this tour. I mean the reaction against the extreme Calvinism of the church first established in this part of America, a movement which has had a powerful tendency to subdue and mitigate sectarian bitterness. In order to give me some idea of the length to which the old Calvinistic doctrines were instilled into the infant mind, one of my companions pre sented me with a curious poem, called the Day of Doom. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the United States of North America, During a Phrenological Visit, Vol. 1 of 2 The circumstances under which this work was composed, and the objects aimed at by the author, are explained in the Introduction. Although written as a journal, only a small portion of it is devoted to personal adventures, or to those topics which usually constitute the substance of a work bearing that form. I cannot, however, allow this opportunity to pass, without expressing my gratitude towards those kind and excellent friends whose society and attentions rendered our residence in the United States at once instructive and agreeable. My acknowledgments are due in a special manner to Dr. John Bell of Philadelphia, and Dr. Andrew Boardman of New York, for much kind and valuable assistance; while to Mr. Charles Humberston of Liverpool, and Mr. George Hart of New York, I am indebted for benefits which those can best appreciate who have experienced the impediments to communication between foreign nations, unavoidably presented by Custom-House regulations. During our whole residence in America, the unwearied attention and punctuality of these two gentlemen conferred on us favors which we cannot return, but which it gives us pleasure thus publicly to acknowledge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Statistical, Political, and Historical Account of the United States North America, Vol. 1: From the Period of Their First Colonization to the Present DayTm; people of the United States have not to seek their origin, like other civilized nations, in the obson rity of barbarous or fabulous ages. Their genealogy is too short and too well ascertained to admit of the embellishment of fiction. At a period comparatively recent, their ancestors, consisting of a few families, were detached from the great mass of the European population, and left to their own resources, in a vast wilderness, where they were surrounded by savage enemies, and had many disadvantages to struggle with. In the short space of two centuries, while some of the older states of Europe have scarcely made any per. Ceptible advances, these few families have increased to a great nation, which has taken its place among the most powerful and enlightened states in the world. The sources of national wealth, and the productive powers of man, which are obscurely traced in the slow progress of old and fully peopled communities, are de. Veloped here on a gigantic scale. Our knowledge is enlarged by viewing a society constituted on prin. Ciples to which the old world presents nothing precise. Vet. I. Bly similar, placed in new circumstances, and compris ing, within a short period, many of the changes and varieties of condition which other nations have passed through in a long series of ages. Every step in their progress announces some' new truth to the world, and their first appearance on the theatre of nations marks a new era in the political history of mankind. It is fortunate that the history of a people whose ca reer has been so singular and instructive is tolerably complete. All the leading events and circumstances which have influenced the fortunes or character of the North Americans, from the first settlement of a few forlorn emigrants, up to the present time, are within the reach of investigation and the steps of that asto-u nishing progress, by which a small nucleus of civilized population has expanded to a mighty empire, can be accurately traced.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of North America, Vol. 1: Discovery and Exploration The statement that we have quoted in our opening para graph but voiced the need that was appreciated throughout the scholastic world. All students desired*a comprehen sive history of America. The stimulus given to historical writing by the lack of such a work found result in the activity of many authors, but, curiously enough, not in at tempts to produce the work needed, but to supply mate rials from which it might be constructed. For example, the last quarter of the nineteenth century was prolific in historical monographs and treatises. Hundreds of well equipped students with valuable resources at their command collected and gave to the world the product of their re search - the data buried in source material. These mono graphic publications, usually written in the form of theses, were of a nature to preclude their wide circulation; they were strictly academic in style and were of no interest to the general reader and, because of their restricted field, of comparatively narrow value to the historian. Yet this monographic literature must not be underestimated, for it was of great value to the limited number of historians seeking information upon the particular subject treated by the monographist. But the theses did not go far toward solving the problem of the production of a comprehensive history. The treatises were a step further in that direction. They were, it is true, limited in scope, but that limitation was not so destructive to their popularity as in the case of the thesis literature, for they were broader in treatment and had more or less perspective. The majority of such publi cations were accurate and had in them elements of interest. Textbooks were published in abundance, but from their nature they cannot be included among comprehensive his tories, nor can those standard and scholarly works upon limited historical periods, which have at infrequent intervals during the last twenty-five years been welcomed by students. During the period under consideration a few general his tories have been published. These are confessedly sketchy, and, with only two exceptions, they have not been written by men of standing among scholars. In these two in stances, the authors have been handicapped by the limits of space and by the fact that no one man is able to write from his own knowledge of the details of American history in the whole, and within the limits imposed by the com mercial necessities of publication produce by his own re search a comprehensive history of the United States, to say nothing of that of North America. A writer undertaking the task must depend on secondary authorities; and, as a rule, he incorporates most of their errors along with their correct statements of fact. No more glaring example of this fallibility of historical writers attempting a task too large can be found than in a recent pretentious general his tory in the compilation of which the author was obliged by the circumstances of production to depend largely on secondary authorities, with the result that more than five hundred errors have been discovered in a single volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From North America, Vol. 1 of 2: Written During a Tour in the United States and Canada On my return home, I found that my letters had been preserved and collected, in order to be copied, if I should give permission. On look ing them over, I was induced to believe, that those on the subject of emigration, contained some particulars which might be useful at that time. When so many persons were leaving their country to seek subsistence in the Western wilds; and under this impression, I sent three or four letters to a respectable periodical publication, in which they were in setted-and, agreeably to my express injune tion, without my name.
