Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection, edited by Distinguished Professor of Korean Studies Bonnie B. C. Oh, helps to fill a considerable gap in the English-language literature on Korea and the United States. Although much has been written about Korea in the Japanese colonial and World War II period and, of course, even more has been made available on the Korean War years, little has been written on the interim period when the United States attempted to rule Korea through a trusteeship. Focused on the occupation and reconstruction of Japan after World War II, the U.S. government conceived a trusteeship for Korea, which would free up American forces to concentrate on Japan. It seemed the perfect solution: it would allow the time needed for Koreans to prepare themselves for independence; it would maintain U.S. involvement and interests in Korea; and it would create the mechanism that could sustain international cooperation. Flawless as it might have seemed, the trusteeship—and its implementer, the American Military Government—did not heed the Korean people's heightened expectation and passion for independence. And it did not handle well the new Soviet-style government it found in place in the north of the peninsula. All together, the various missteps and miscalculations of the American Military Government—and Washington—contributed to the new war to come. Oh and her contributors shed light on this previously unexamained period, and make significant use of Korean-language sources in doing so. Essential reading for scholars, students, and researchers involved with modern Korean Studies, the Cold War, and U.S. military history.

Book Synopsis The War for Korea, 1945-1950 by : Allan R. Millett
Download or read book The War for Korea, 1945-1950 written by Allan R. Millett and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2015-02-27 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the major powers sent troops to the Korean peninsula in June of 1950, it supposedly marked the start of one of the last century’s bloodiest conflicts. Allan Millett, however, reveals that the Korean War actually began with partisan clashes two years earlier and had roots in the political history of Korea under Japanese rule, 1910–1945. The first in a new two-volume history of the Korean War, Millett’s study offers the most comprehensive account of its causes and early military operations. Millett traces the war’s origins to the post-liberation conflict between two revolutionary movements, the Marxist-Leninists and the Nationalist-capitalists. With the U.S.-Soviet partition of Korea following World War II, each movement, now with foreign patrons, asserted its right to govern the peninsula, leading directly to the guerrilla warfare and terrorism in which more than 30,000 Koreans died. Millett argues that this civil strife, fought mostly in the South, was not so much the cause of the Korean War as its actual beginning. Millett describes two revolutions locked in irreconcilable conflict, offering an even-handed treatment of both Communists and capitalists-nationalists. Neither movement was a model of democracy. He includes Korean, Chinese, and Russian perspectives on this era, provides the most complete account of the formation of the South Korean army, and offers new interpretations of the U.S. occupation of Korea, 1945–1948. Millett’s history redefines the initial phase of the war in Asian terms. His book shows how both internal forces and international pressures converged to create the Korean War, a conflict that still shapes the politics of Asia.

Book Synopsis The United Nations and the Peaceful Unification of Korea by : Leon Gordenker
Download or read book The United Nations and the Peaceful Unification of Korea written by Leon Gordenker and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where there has been fighting or the threat of fighting since the end of the Second World War, the United Nations has ahnost al ways been involved. Frequently that involvement has taken the concrete form of a field commission or a team of observers, made up of nationals of several countries and reporting to the General Assembly or the Security Council. Even while I write this, military observers wearing special United Nations insignia are patrolling the border areas of Syria and Lebanon. Meanwhile, observation groups with a longer history are on duty in Kashmir and along the Israeli borders. A field commission of the United Nations still remains in Korea, and others had been at work in Greece, Eritrea, Somalia and on the Hungarian border. All of them lived, worked and reported in an atmosphere of controversy. Perhaps none could have claimed that their work ended in full success. Their existence, however, suggests that the United Nations has developed a special political instrument for use in troubled areas where solutions are elusive but where danger of a spreading con flict is never distant. This study deals with the work of field com missions of the United Nations in Korea before the violence of 1950. Their work, whatever its merit, came crashing down with the North Korean attack.
