Book excerpt: Excerpt from The United States Marine Corps in the World War This regiment was soon joined by the Sixth Regiment and the Sixth Machine Gun Battalion Of Marines, and the Fourth Brigade Of Marines was organized, and as one of the two Infantry brigades Of the Second Division of Regulars engaged in actual battle in no less than eight distinct operations in France, of which four were major opera tions. The French Army recognized the splendid work of the Fifth and Sixth Regiments of Marines by citing them no less than three times in Army orders for achievements in the chateau-thierry sector, in the aisne-marne (soissons) Offensive, and in the meuse-argonne (champagne). The Sixth Machine Gun Battalion was similarly cited for its work in the chateau-thierry sector and Aisne - Marne (soissons) offensive. The Fourth Brigade received a similar cita tion for its work in the Chateau - Thierry sector. Since two French Army citations are sufficient to make an organization eligible for the award of the French fourragere, the high standard Of the Marine units is evident. Information was received in January, 1920, that the War Department had accepted the award of the French fourragere in the colors of the ribbon of the Croix de Guerre for several Army organi zations and the three units of the Fourth Brigade. Within one year after the outbreak of war the Marine Corps placed about as many enlisted men in France as there were in the Marine Cor s when war was declared. During t e month of June, 1918, when the battle deaths around Hill 142, Bouresches, Belleau Wood, and Vaux, of Americans attached to the Second Division amounted to (of which at least were Marines) and the nonfatal casualties to more (of which were Marines), the legislative strength of the Marine Corps was but Officers and enlisted men; the actual strength on June 30, 1918, including reserves, was officers and enlisted men, and of this total about 300 Officers and enlisted men were in France. These latter figures include those Marines who suffered casualties in the battles of June, 1918. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the United States Marine Corps A custom has prevailed throughout the armies of Europe to keep regular record of the services and achievements of their regi ments and corps. This principle has not obtained in our own country, hence a great difficulty arises in presenting an authentic account of the services of any branch of our establishment either military or naval. This defect has long been felt in relation to the Corps of which this historical record is designed to treat. An attempt was made by the author in 1874 to present a true and faithful record, but owing to circumstances beyond his control the original idea was changed during his absence from the country. It is now thought that the proper time has arrived for an edition which will present a record of events that will be acceptable to the Corps and to the nation. Impressed with this consideration, and influenced by a strong attachment to the welfare and reputation of the Corps in which he has the honor to serve, the author feels persuaded that an impartial account of the services of the United States Marines will not only reflect an additional lustre on its distinguished character, but en courage a spirit of emulation, which is the strongest impulse to great and gallant actions. Although he may have failed in accomplishing that object with the ability due its importance, he trusts that the fidelity and zeal which has been exercised in the present compilation will obtain for him the indulgent consideration of those who are aware of the difficulties with which he has had to contend. How we have actively participated in every war in which our nation has engaged, expeditions on every sea, and to every continent except Australia, our own Civil and Indian Wars, quelling riots, protecting American life, property, mail, and Presidents, and a long list of other activities in which Marines have played an im portant part in our history and contact with other nations. I am reminded of a factory in Baltimore which had a large sign painted across the front of the building, Born in Baltimore, raised everywhere. It was an umbrella factory. The Marine Corps was born in Philadelphia in 177 5 and Operates everywhere. End of historical sketch. We are justly proud of our record, and sing with pride that part of our Marine Hymn - From the Halls of Montezuma to the Shores of Tripoli, We Fight Our Country's Battles on the Land as on the Sea. But who took us to the land where we fought? Who took us across the sea? Upon whom did the government place the initial responsibility for the enforcement of its determined policy? The navy. The Navy has been our father and mother, tutored us during our childhood days, afforded Opportunities for us to learn by experience, watched and guard ed our growth to manhood, and demanded of our nation that we be allowed to grow strong and sufficient to perform the tasks which she has assigned to us. DO not weaken in that demand. We say, that by Congressional action, we are the oldest branch of the services. That's our story, and we'll stick to it. But we are proud of that tutelage, of that association, of the fact that the Navy has given us a job that measures up to the responsibility of any other element of the fleet. Book excerpt: “An amazingly detailed account of the American Expeditionary Force at Belleau Wood in 1918” from the authors of Tanks in Hell (Books Monthly). “Retreat, hell! We just got here!” The words of Capt. Lloyd Williams at Belleau Wood in June 1918 entered United States Marine Corps legend, and the Marine brigade’s actions there—along with the censor’s failure to take out the name of the brigade in the battle reports—made the Corps famous. The Marines went to war as part of the American Expeditionary Force, bitterly resented by the Army and Gen. Pershing. The Army tried to use them solely as labor troops and replacements, but the German spring offensive of 1918 forced the issue. The French begged Pershing to commit his partially trained men, and two untested American divisions, supported by British and French units, were thrown into the path of five German divisions. Three horrific weeks later, the Marines held the entirety of Belleau Wood. The Marines then fought in the almost-forgotten Blanc Mont Ridge Offensive in October, as well as in every well-known AEF action until the end of the war. This book looks at all the operations of the Marine Corps in World War I, covers the activities of both ground and air units, and considers the units that supported the Marine brigade. It examines how, during the war years, the Marine Corps changed from a small organization of naval security detachments to an elite land combat force. “The goal of revealing the thoughts and actions of individual soldiers in battle is achieved admirably here.” —The Journal of America’s Military Past
