Book Synopsis Calculating compassion by : Rebecca Gill
Download or read book Calculating compassion written by Rebecca Gill and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-16 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calculating compassion examines the origins of British relief work in late-nineteenth-century wars on the continent and the fringes of Empire. Commencing with the Franco-Prussian war of 1870–71, it follows distinguished surgeons and ‘lady amateurs’ as they distributed aid to wounded soldiers and distressed civilians, often in the face of considerable suspicion. Dispensing with the notion of shared ‘humanitarian’ ideals, it examines the complex, and sometimes controversial, origins of organised relief, and illuminates the emergence of practices and protocols still recognisable in the delivery of overseas aid. This book is intended for students, academics and relief practitioners interested in the historical concerns of first generation relief agencies such as the British Red Cross Society and the Save the Children Fund, and their legacies today.
Book Synopsis Governing Migration in the Late Ottoman Empire by : Ella Fratantuono
Download or read book Governing Migration in the Late Ottoman Empire written by Ella Fratantuono and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2024-04-30 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do terms used to describe migration change over time? How do those changes reflect possibilities of inclusion and exclusion? Ella Fratantuono places the governance of migrants at the centre of Ottoman state-building across a 60-year period (1850-1910) to answer these questions. She traces the significance of the term muhacir (migrant) within Ottoman governance during this global era of mass migration, during which millions of migrants arrived in the empire, many fleeing from oppression, violence and war. Rather than adopting the familiar distinction between coerced and non-coerced migration, Fratanuono explores how officials' use of muhacir captures changing approaches to administering migrants and the Ottoman population. By doing so, she places the Ottoman experience within a global history of migration management and sheds light on how six decades of governing migration contributed to the infrastructures and ideology essential to mass displacement in the empire's last decade.

Download or read book Britannia's Embrace written by Caroline Shaw and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2015 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Britannia's Embrace revises current understandings about the origins of refuge, which have focused exclusively on the period post-1914. It argues that the responsibility to protect persecuted foreigners developed in nineteenth-century Britain through a popular movement that equated refugee relief with what it meant to be liberal on a global stage.

Book Synopsis Outskirts of Empire by : John Fisher
Download or read book Outskirts of Empire written by John Fisher and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outskirts of Empire: Studies in British Power Projection investigates the substructure of Britain’s interests in the Near East and beyond during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Essays address themes in British power projection in a geographically wide area encompassing parts of the Ottoman Empire, Morocco and Abyssinia, illuminating interlinking elements of Britain’s power and presence through commerce, religion, consular activity, expatriates, travel and exploration and technology. Through careful investigation of the interface of these themes the book develops a deeper sense of Britain’s presence in the Near East and contiguous areas and highlights the network of Britons who were required to sustain that presence.
