Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Truths of Religion The principles of Morality and of Religion are few and simple. After all the systems and disputes of ethical philosophy, the great Teacher has comprised the essence of morality in one sentence, Thou shalt love thy neigh bor as thyself. In like manner, natural religion is summed up in, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart. On these two commandments hang, not only the law and the prophets, but the religion, as far as reason can discover, of all intelligent natures, of angels as well as of men. It would not have been undertaken had it not been for the affection which I possess for my old teacher and friend, and for the influence which he exerted over my life when I had the privilege of spending nearly three years with him in the ancient University of Jena. And such an ex perience as mine is only a specimen of what is true of thousands of other students who have passed through his classes in Jena since 1874. These students are found all over the world, and are all imbued with some thing of the spirit of their great teacher in connection with the problems and contents of religion. I come not as Huss did, or Luther or Calvin, with fire in my eye and Satan in my heart. I come as the Summer breeze cometh, to soothe, strengthen and delight. I come in the interests of peace, to pro mote peace. I come to teach liberty of conscience and liberty of sentiment, the unrestricted right of all men and women to believe in those doctrines which the God of heaven, as well as the God of earth, impels them to believe. I come to teach the common brother hood of the race, not in theory only, but in practice, not for any one sect, butfor all mankind. I come to teach love, the love for all nature, as well as for Nature's God. I come to praise God, not because I fear him, but because I love him; not because I dread his mightiness, but because I adore his goodness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Truth of the Christian Religion The case is similar with regard to the injunctions of morality, to which such great importance is assigned in the Christian religion. As they are represented in the conscience, they claim to be directly valid without any further justification or demonstration. If we ask whether they' are true, that does not mean whether they are subjectively valid in the manner stated, but it means whether they are' really to be referred to God, and because of such origin have the significance of objective laws of the world. The question therefore goes back, as before, to the other query whether the Christian faith which ascribes such significance to them is true. We are concerned with the truth of the Faith when we inquire regarding the truth of the Christian Religion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Truth of the Christian Religion, Vol. 2 To this assertion it may no doubt be objected, that sometimes the solitary thinker seeks the truth for him self and only for himself, without being concerned about coming to such an understanding with others. But the Objection is Of no moment. In the first place, it may fairly be asked whether the impulse to com municate truth does not naturally grow out of the search for it and the discovery Of it; whether it is not a case as rare as it is abnormal, if that does not occur in any way; whether, indeed, there is truth at all for the individual as such, since what the word denotes really exists from the nature of it for every one, and is meant to exist for every one. But above all it would be advisable even for the solitary thinker to seek the truth which he craves only for himself, just as if he wanted to come to an understanding with all mankind and to convince all. If he fails to do so, he may rest assured that instead Of finding truth he will find error. He takes with him on his career a sure guarantee of that as a matter Of course, in the form Of his own likes and dislikes; and he does not want to do that, we may be sure, if he is really concerned about the truth. Thus it cannot but be the case that the purpose Of coming to an understanding with others, and if possible with all, must decide as to the choice Of the starting-point. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scripture the Only Guide to Religious Truth It may be expected that some reasons should be given for presenting the following pages to the Public, especially as it is known by many that, at one period, we were not the most friendly to publications on Religion. This arose from the certain knowledge we had gained by experience, as well as observation, that a very improper use is too often made of them, and from thinking that a simple honest attention to the scriptures would answer every beneficial purpose; for it it is evident that great numbers of religious people, of certain descriptions, do in fact, though not in profession, seek more for a knowledge of their state, and more for assistance and assurance of their safety from the writings and experience men, than they do from the scriptures. Neither is this to be wondered at, when we consider their ideas of the depravity of their nature, and that the scriptures cannot be understood without supernatural assistance. However, we can assure the Reader that these Letters were originally written at the earnest request of a Friend, without any determinate idea of publishing them. Since they were finished, a number of reasons presented themselves which have induced us to make them public. We have been grossly misrepresented. We have been made to speak sentiments which we do not believe. We have been considered as enemies to religion, almost without a hearing. It has been thought that we deny the use of prayer and the work of the Spirit; that we have no experience, are contrary to all men, and maintain that none will be saved but ourselves, &c. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The True Religion: Being the Grounds of the Catholic Faith The object of the following pages is to give in a brief space an outline of the grounds of the Catholic religion. The argument pre supposes three things: (i) Belief in the existence of God, the Creator of the universe and Of man (2) the spirituality of the human soul and (3) the validity of the pro cesses of human reason. The first two can be proved (see Bibliography at the end), although considerations of space forbid their treatment here; the third is not capable of proof, for any proof must assume and involve the conclusion. While the progress of physical science dis closes the works of the God of nature, it illustrates also the truth of his word. The very objections of ignorance become the arguments of knowledge. And, as superstition is shaken, true religion is confirmed.
