Book Synopsis The British Moralists and the Internal 'Ought' by : Stephen L. Darwall
Download or read book The British Moralists and the Internal 'Ought' written by Stephen L. Darwall and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-04-28 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a major work in the history of ethics, and provides the first study of early modern British philosophy in several decades. Professor Darwall discerns two distinct traditions feeding into the moral philosophy of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. On the one hand, there is the empirical, naturalist tradition, comprising Hobbes, Locke, Cumberland, Hutcheson, and Hume, which argues that obligation is the practical force that empirical discoveries acquire in the process of deliberation. On the other hand, there is a group including Cudworth, Shaftesbury, Butler, and in some moments Locke, which views obligation as inconceivable without autonomy and which seeks to develop a theory of the will as self-determining.
Book Synopsis The Trinitarian Theology of Dr. Samuel Clarke (1675-1729) by : Thomas C. Pfizenmaier
Download or read book The Trinitarian Theology of Dr. Samuel Clarke (1675-1729) written by Thomas C. Pfizenmaier and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-07-04 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with the trinitarian debate in early eighteenth-century England. Samuel Clarke's trinitarian thought represents a reappraisal of that doctrine in the light of early modern philosophy and close Patristic study. This work utilizes current studies on the fourth-century debate, recent evaluations of Latitudinarianism, and previously unpublished theological manuscripts of Sir Isaac Newton's, to shed light on Clarke's treatment of this central Christian doctrine. The conclusion calls for a reclassification of Clarke's thought by historians of doctrine. The volume is organized in three parts. The first examines Clarke's intellectual milieu, the second treats his use of sources, and the third evaluates his role in the Trinitarian controversy. Students of Latitudinarianism, the doctrine of the Trinity and Isaac Newton's thought will all profit from this discussion. In addition, those interested in the relationship between science and religion will benefit.
Download or read book The Best Effect written by Ryan Darr and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2023-12-06 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theological history of consequentialism and a fresh agenda for teleological ethics. Consequentialism—the notion that we can judge an action by its effects alone—has been among the most influential approaches to ethics and public policy in the Anglophone world for more than two centuries. In The Best Effect, Ryan Darr argues that consequentialist ethics is not as secular or as rational as it is often assumed to be. Instead, Darr describes the emergence of consequentialism in the seventeenth century as a theological and cosmological vision and traces its intellectual development and eventual secularization across several centuries. The Best Effect reveals how contemporary consequentialism continues to bear traces of its history and proposes in its place a more expansive vision for teleological ethics.

Book Synopsis Amor Dei in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries by : David C. Bellusci
Download or read book Amor Dei in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries written by David C. Bellusci and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2013-06-10 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amor Dei, “love of God” raises three questions: How do we know God is love? How do we experience love of God? How free are we to love God? This book presents three kinds of love, worldly, spiritual, and divine to understand God’s love. The work begins with Augustine’s Confessions highlighting his Manichean and Neoplatonic periods before his conversion to Christianity. Augustine’s confrontation with Pelagius anticipates the unresolved disputes concerning God’s love and free will. In the sixteenth-century the Italian humanist, Gasparo Contarini introduces the notion of “divine amplitude” to demonstrate how God’s goodness is manifested in the human agent. Pierre de Bérulle, Guillaume Gibieuf, and Nicolas Malebranche show connections with Contarini in the seventeenth-century controversies relating free will and divine love. In response to the free will dispute, the Scottish philosopher, William Chalmers, offers his solution. Cornelius Jansen relentlessly asserts his anti-Pelagian interpretation of Augustine stirring up more controversy. John Norris, Malebranche’s English disciple, exchanges his views with Mary Astell and Damaris Masham. In the tradition of Cambridge Platonism, Ralph Cudworth conveys a God who “sweetly governs.” The organization of sections represents the love of God in ascending-descending movements demonstrating that, “human love is inseparable from divine love.”

Book Synopsis Jacob Brucker, Critical History of Philosophy: Preliminary Discourse and The Socratic School by :
Download or read book Jacob Brucker, Critical History of Philosophy: Preliminary Discourse and The Socratic School written by and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-10-19 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well known that philosophy has a history that spans over more than two thousand years. It is less known, however, that the discipline narrating philosophy's past emerged much later, namely in the 18th century. That new discipline was called 'history of philosophy'. The German historian and theologian Johann Jacob Brucker (1696-1770) had a decisive influence upon the formation of this new discipline through his Latin work Historia critica philosophiae (Critical history of philosophy), which was first published in 1742-1744, and which came out in a second edition in 1766-1767. To Brucker it was paramount to define history of philosophy as a philosophical discipline, and not merely as a historical discipline. In order to achieve this, it was vital to define the new discipline's object and explain which material should be included or excluded, and it was crucial to define an interpretative and philosophical method to be deployed on the material selected. Brucker's Historia provided these definitions in the opening chapter, in the present volume translated as the 'Preliminary Discourse', where he also outlined a global scheme of periodization and geographical regions. Moreover, he put his own precepts to practice in the remaining part of the work, which accounted for what he regarded as a global history of philosophy from the beginning of the world up till his own times. The second chapter translated in the present book, 'The Socratic School', illustrates the hermeneutical consequences of the method laid down in the 'Preliminary Discourse', but it also offers a unique insight into the 18th-century understanding and evaluation of Socrates. In quantitative terms, Brucker's Historia was the most extensive account of philosophy's past produced in the 18th century. It was cited and paraphrased in the most authoritative encyclopaedias and histories of philosophy produced in Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries, and its key concepts were often transferred to histories of philosophy produced outside Europe. For this reason, Brucker's Historia has exerted an enormous influence upon historical consciousness among Europeans, but also among peoples living outside Europe. The present book provides first-time English translations of parts of Brucker's work.
