Book Synopsis The Troubler of Israel by : Andrew Mitin
Download or read book The Troubler of Israel written by Andrew Mitin and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-10-18 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prophet Elijah has seen enough. The reign of King Ahab has produced more evil in Israel than any king before him. Influenced by his foreign queen, Jezebel, Ahab has embraced the worship of Baal, which includes child sacrifice and the death of Yahweh's, the true God's, prophets. Taking upon himself the burden of cursing Ahab's rule, Elijah proclaims a drought and flees to the Kerith Ravine, where he considers his next move. The Troubler of Israel reimagines Elijah's life and times between his self-imposed exile east of the Jordan in Sidon to his last stand against four hundred priests of Baal. This one man's will against all odds proves to the nation of Israel that God Almighty is faithful and just to those who will call upon His name and seek his glory.

Book Synopsis The Trouble with Kings by : Stephen McKenzie
Download or read book The Trouble with Kings written by Stephen McKenzie and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-10-22 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the composition of the book of Kings and its implications for the Deuteronomistic History (DH) of which it is a part. McKenzie analyses Kings on the basis of Noth's model of a single author/editor behind the original DH. He contends that the Deuteronomist (Dtr) wrote the series of oracles against the Northern royal houses without utilizing a prior, running prophetic document that some scholars have posited behind Samuel and Kings. He regards many other prophetic stories in Kings, including most of the Elijah and Elisha legends as later additions to the DH, in accord with Noth's recognition that the original DH was frequently supplemented by various writers. McKenzie illustrates Dtr's compositional techniques in a treatment of the accounts of Hezekiah and Josiah in Kings. He tentatively dates Dtr to Josiah's reign but believes that tensions among the many later additions to the work, including the report from Josiah's death on, suggest that they are not the result of systematic editing (e.g., Dtr2). The book offers the most up-to-date survey of research on the DH and the most recent detailed analysis of the lengthy variant version of Jeroboam's reign in LXXB at 1 Kings 12:24a-z. It offers a fresh perspective on the original shape of the DH based on recent scholarship and the author's own critical investigation.

Book Synopsis A God Entranced Vision of All Things by : John Piper
Download or read book A God Entranced Vision of All Things written by John Piper and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2004-08-10 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Useful men are some of the greatest blessings of a people. To have many such is more for a people's happiness than almost anything, unless it be God's own gracious, spiritual presence amongst them; they are precious gifts of heaven." Certainly one of the most useful men in evangelical history was the man who preached those words, pastor and theologian Jonathan Edwards. Commemorating his 300th birthday, general editors John Piper and Justin Taylor chose ten essays that highlight different aspects of Edwards's life and legacy and show how his teachings are just as relevant today as they were three centuries ago. Even within the church, many people know little more about Edwards than what is printed in American history textbooks-most often, excerpts from his best-known sermon, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God." They unjustly envision Edwards preaching only fire and brimstone to frightened listeners. But he knew and preached God's heaven as much as Satan's hell. He was a humble and joyful servant, striving to glorify God in his personal life and public ministry. This book's contributors investigate the character and teachings of the man who preached from a deep concern for the unsaved and a passionate desire for God. Studying the life and works of this dynamic Great Awakening figure will rouse slumbering Christians, prompting them to view the world through Edwards's God-centered lens.

Book Synopsis Our Warfare by : Theodore Austin-Sparks
Download or read book Our Warfare written by Theodore Austin-Sparks and published by Book Ministry. This book was released on 2011-09-13 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh (for the weapons of OUR WARFARE are not of the flesh, but mighty before God to the casting down of strong holds)” (2 Corinthians 10:3–4). "Although the Bible contains so much about the warfare of God’s people, and although we as His people may have had much teaching on the subject, it would probably be true to say that we have largely failed to apply the instruction we have received—to situations, to circumstances, to happenings; and that this accounts for many of our troubles, individually and collectively. While there is much for which the enemy is not to be blamed as the first cause, but which is due rather to our own foolishness or un-guardedness — our own faults — yet there is still very much more that is attributable to his interest, to his interference, to his action. Our need today is not so much to be informed as to the reality of spiritual conflict." T.A-S.
