Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Troubadour and Other Poems The wind blew chill, the night was drear And round the strong walls of the keep The silent snow fell white and deep. But well the Baron's board was spread, Of winter ways he had no dread. Good meat, good Wine, good company What more could heart desire Yet he Sat frowning by the yule-log's flame, That lit the cheek of squire and dame. And too, his lady, pouting, pressed Against the window, facing west, As though in vain she sought to see Some guest belated on the lee. For some months I had been planning a booklet containing a few of my writings. I had discussed the matter with a number of my friends. Meeting one of them one day, I inquired of him confidentially as to what the others thought of the venture: "What do they say?" said I. "Say," said he, "why, they don't say anything - they just laugh." I was delighted. It is well to have cheerful, encouraging friends. The cold, indifferent person is a pneumatic brake on the wheels of progress. About a year ago I sent some of these creatures of my brain to an editor in Alabama, who returned them with a criticism in which he stated that the "stuff" was crude and hinted that the writer was a fool. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Troubadours at Home: Their Lives and Personalities, Their, Songs and Their World Done at last, thank heaven, with crusades and battles and massacres and all the rest of the Albigensian troubles. Albi and the south lie now behind us, our faces are toward the north, and our thoughts turn to the famous troubadours awaiting us there. Yet we are not quite done, after all. No more horrors threaten us, but just here we stumble upon the comic side of these terrible events; for the tragedies of real life have a strange way of edging now and then into farce. The farce opens rather oddly. We stand on a sharp knob of rock and earth overlooking a village on the edge of Auvergne. It must always have been attractive, this Vic-sur-Cere - for we see here yet a one-time residence of the prince of Monaco, shorn of its outer beauties by the patriots of '93 - and at present the town is getting its name up as a regulation summer-resort. Circulars expatiate upon its mineral springs and its gorge. Chromo-lithographs picture its mountain in all the waiting-rooms of the railroad system. Progress is beginning to lavish benign influences upon it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Troubadours and Trouveres: New and Old The reader of Calendau must begin by dis abusing himself of the idea that the sensations which he received from Mireio are to be pre cisely repeated. Nothing, indeed, is in the nature of things more unlikely than that we shall be twice surprised by the same person, in thexsame way. The curious naivete' of the former tale is abandoned, perhaps deliberately, along with the rather transparent pretence of singing for shepherds and farmer-folk alone. The usual reading public is addressed in Cal endau, and means not wholly unusual are em ployed to excite and detain our interest. A little shallop slides Under the arch above the steel-blue lake, Where flash the stars between the trembling reeds, And fire-flies gleam, and gnats wind drowsy horns And as the Sharp prow parts the thick-grown weeds, A silver ripple from its single oar Marks the boat's course to where the turret-wall Drinks in black shade the water at its base. Then a low twang of lute-strings and a voice Passionate-sweet comes up. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lives of the Troubadours: Translated From the Medieval Provencal, With Introductory Matter and Notes, and With Specimens of Their Poetry Rendered Into English The Lives of the Troubadours, though more than once published in their original form, have never, I think, hitherto been wholly translated. It seemed to me, therefore, that an English version of them might be acceptable to those readers who, while not Provencal students, take a keen interest in the life and thought of the best ages of chivalry. The literary activity of the troubadours extended, roughly speaking, from 1100-1250. Their poetry was at its best during the last thirty years of the twelfth century, and the early part of the thirteenth; and it was during the latter period that the desire of knowing something of the troubadours' lives seems to have made itself felt. About that time it became customary to head the collection of a troubadour's poems with the story of his life, which often served to explain otherwise obscure allusions in the poems. Book excerpt: It was out of medieval Provence—Proensa—that the ethos of courtly love emerged, and it was in the poetry of the Provençal troubadours that it found its perfect expression. Their poetry was also a central inspiration for Dante and his Italian contemporaries, propagators of the modern vernacular lyric, and seven centuries later it was no less important to the modernist Ezra Pound. These poems, a source to which poetry has returned again and again in search of renewal, are subtle, startling, earthy, erotic, and supremely musical. The poet Paul Blackburn studied and translated the troubadours for twenty years, and the result of that long commitment is Proensa, an anthology of thirty poets of the eleventh through thirteenth centuries, which has since established itself not only as a powerful and faithful work of translation but as a work of poetry in its own right. Blackburn’s Proensa, George Economou writes, “will take its place among Gavin Douglas’ Aeneid, Golding’s Metamorphoses, the Homer of Chapman, Pope, and Lattimore, Waley’s Japanese, and Pound’s Chinese, Italian, and Old English.”
