Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a gridlock in churches today regarding the role of women. This debate extends beyond the relationship between men and women. In 1 Corinthians 11:3, when Paul says, "the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God," he is drawing a parallel between the relationship of men and women and the relationship of the Father and the Son within the Trinity. This book explores the controversial theological premise that, while maintaining equality of essence, functionally the Son is eternally subordinate to the Father and women are permanently subordinate to men. Nancy Hedberg shares from her research and personal experience to make the case that equality of essence on the one hand, and permanent functional subordination on the other-whether applied to the Trinity or the relationship between men and women-is a questionable premise and is not supported logically, historically, or biblically. Women, Men, and the Trinity includes contemporary, historical, and biblical research regarding functional and essential equality and explores the practical implications of true equality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of the soul is one which will not go away. This is despite the fact that traditional dualist understandings of humankind – that we are compound creatures, made up of a material body and a non-material soul – have been widely criticised in recent decades, by scholars from both theological and scientific backgrounds. What are the origins of the centuries-old traditions of dualist thinking? How have they been developed, and what can still be learned from them? What can modern philosophers and theologians say about the concept of the soul from a monist perspective? What light can scientific studies of the brain cast on it? And what perspectives can faiths other than Christianity bring to these issues? These were some of the issues considered at the 2012 conference of the Science and Religion Forum, held at Regents Park College, Oxford. This book presents papers derived from that conference, including contributions from leading scientific and theological scholars. Their very disparate approaches – and very diverse conclusions – will be of interest to a wide readership.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work represents a novel treatment of the mission of the Church fathers, the early Christian ascetics, and their disciples during the turbulent centuries that followed the passing of the apostles. Approaching a normally arcane subject largely through the interplay of character and incident, Outreach and Renewal provides a stirring account of the various ways in which spiritual leaders of the time promoted the Gospel message. Readers experience these leaders as they illuminate, strengthen, restore, or defend the faith, through their words and actions, of fellow Christians. Facilitating fresh insights and thought-provoking conclusions, the theme proceeds through the interaction of a varied cast of vital individuals engaged in lively and sometimes acerbic discourse, which is always aimed at the glory of God. With the careful attention the author gives to the early Irish church and its singular representatives, this work is a unique and valuable contribution to the study of the patristic era.

Book excerpt: This book is a study of the nine short poems, called romances, composed by the Spanish mystic Saint John of the Cross (San Juan de la Cruz). The focus of the poems is the Trinity, and their point of departure is the opening verses of the Gospel of John. This is the first in-depth, English-language analysis of these poems, and looks at their literary, historical, scriptural, theological, and mystical elements. It also ties these works to San Juan’s better-known lyrical poems and his prose commentaries. It will appeal to anyone interested in Spanish mystical poetry and the sources that inform that poetry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graham Walker boldly recasts the debate over issues like constitutional interpretation and judicial review, and challenges contemporary thinking not only about specifically constitutional questions but also about liberalism, law, justice, and rights. Walker targets the "skeptical" moral nihilism of leading American judges and writers, on both the political left and right, charging that their premises undermine the authority of the Constitution, empty its moral words of any determinate meaning, and make nonsense of ostensibly normative theories. But he is even more worried about those who desire to conduct constitutional government by direct recourse to an authoritative moral truth. Augustine's political ethics, Walker argues, offers a solution--a way to embrace substantive goodness while relativizing its embodiment in politics and law. Walker sees in Augustinian theory an understanding of the rule of law that prevents us from mistaking law for moral truth. Pointing out how the tensions in that theory resonate with the normative ambivalence of America's liberal constitutionalism, he shows that Augustine can provide successful but decidedly nonliberal grounds for the artifices and compromises characteristic of law in a liberal state. Book excerpt: Through extensive textual analysis, this book concludes that the prevailing opinion about the nature of modern and contemporary philosophy is wrong. It maintains that almost all modern and contemporary philosophy is deconstructed, secularized, Augustinian theology, not philosophy. The work is divided into eight chapters, a guest Foreword by Herbert I. London (President of the Hudson Institute and Olin Professor of Humanities at New York University) notes, bibliography, and an index. Chapter 1 (Protagoras Sees the Ghost of Hippo) considers Cartesian thought, Hobbes, and Newton. Chapter 2 (I Feel the Spirit Move Me) examines Locke, Berkeley, and Hume. Chapter 3 (The Urge to Emerge) investigates Lessing and Rousseau. Chapters 4 (To Dream the Impossible Dream) and 5 (Wake Up, Wake Up, You Sleepyhead) treat Kant. Chapters 6 (I Am Music) and 7 (Looking for God in All The Wrong Places) deal with Hegel. Chapter 8 (Dirty Dancing: Higher Education as Enlightened Swindling) concludes that a lack of philosophical and historical experience coupled with a widespread inability to read philosophical texts according to the intention of the author (1) causes us to mistake secularized theology for philosophy and (2) is a main cause for the decline of contemporary universities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his concise and ambitious book, Gareth B. Matthews explores the implications of doing philosophy in the first person. He focuses on the most notable attempts in the history of philosophy to take this perspective: Augustine's Confessions, perhaps the first significant autobiography in Western culture, and Soliloquies, a dialogue between himself and reason; and Descartes's Meditations and Discourse on Method. "By examining the first-personalization of philosophy in these two historical figures," he writes, "we can learn something important about our own philosophical options, and about those of any other thinker who dares, philosophically, to say 'I.'"
