Book excerpt: Jean Piaget is unquestionably one of the world's most renowned psychologists. This book encompasses his latest research and recasts his previous conclusions in the light of his recent work. His central idea is that knowledge proceeds neither from intuitive or logical internal processes, but that it develops from a series of cognitive structures, built one above the other, requiring continuous adjustment and leading to further constructions. -- Publisher description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chapters in this volume attempt to establish some foundational principles of a theory of the mind/brain grounded in evolutionary and process theory. From this standpoint, the book discusses some main problems in philosophical psychology, including the nature and origins of the mind/brain state, experience and consciousness, feeling, subjective time and free will. The approach - that of microgenesis - holds that formative phases in the generation of the mental state are the primary focus of explanation, not the assumed properties of logical solids. For microgenesis, the process leading to a conscious end point is, together with the final content, part of an epochal state, the outcome of which, an act, object or word, incorporates earlier segments of that series, such as value, meaning and belief.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the controversial issQes which have recently come into prominence among philosophers and theologians is how one should understand the term l God. It seems that, despite the fact that a certain idea of God is assumed by not most, people, there is a degree of disagreement over the meaning many, if of the term. "God" is generally taken to refer to a supreme Being, the Creator, who is perfect and self-existent, holy, personal and loving. This understanding of "God" corresponds to what many have either been brought up to believe in or have come to accept as the meaning of this word. Neverthe less, theists appear to be defending a particular idea of God and to be accusing atheists of attacking another, one which does not tie in with the theistic interpretation. Cardinal Maximos IV, for instance, is quoted as saying, "The God the atheists don't believe in is a God I don't believe in either. "2 On the other hand, atheists have been challenging believers to explain clearly what they mean by "God" because these critics cannot see how that idea can have any acceptable meaning. Furthermore, theists them selves seem to be divided over the issue. H. P. Owen in his book Concepts of Deity shows quite convincingly that there is "a bewildering variety of concepts of God" among theists. ' One has only to ask around for confirma tion of this observation.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 2002 God, Literature and Process Thought looks at the use of God in writing, as a part of the creative advance, immersed in the processes of reality and affected by events in the world. This edited collection outlines and promotes the novel view that there is much to be gained when those who value the insights of process thought ‘encounter’ the many and varied writers of literature and literary theory. It also celebrates the notion of process poesis, a fresh way of reflecting theologically and philosophically that takes account of literary forms and promises to transform creatively the very structure of process thought today.

Book excerpt: The relationship of mind to matter, and the very understanding of mind and matter still eludes understanding, even after millennia of philosophical work and centuries of scientific reflection. The present volume shows how process philosophy helps us in conceptualizing such problems. The reader will find twelve chapters—written by prominent specialists of various specializations—discussing the relation between a processual school of thinking and natural and psychological scientific research, with a focus on the problems of mind and experience. The three successive sections of the book scrutinise in increasing detail the human mind, to give the full overview of the role that process philosophy might play in providing a consistent, unified language for the description of physical and mental reality.
