Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The disparate texts in this anthology, produced in England between the late thirteenth and the early sixteenth centuries, challenge, and in some cases parody and satirize, the institution of marriage. In so doing, according to the Introduction, they allow us to interrogate the traditional assumptions that shape the idea of the medieval household. The trials of marriage seem to outweigh its joys at times and, as some of these texts suggest, maintaining a sense of humor in the face of what must have been great difficulty could have been no easy task. The texts bridge generic categories. Some are obscure, written by anonymous authors; others are familiar, written by the likes of John Lydgate, John Wyclif, and William Dunbar. Taken together they suggest that, despite the fact that marriage had become a sacrament in the twelfth century and was increasingly recognized by ecclesiastical and secular authorities as a valuable social institution, it was not always a stabilizing and orderly social force.

Book excerpt: Ryan and Selena Frederick were newlyweds when they landed in Switzerland to pursue Selena's dream of training horses. Neither of them knew at the time that Ryan was living out a death sentence brought on by a worsening genetic heart defect. Soon it became clear he needed major surgery that could either save his life--or result in his death on the operating table. The young couple prepared for the worst. When Ryan survived, they both realized that they still had a future together. But the near loss changed the way they saw all that would lie ahead. They would live and love fiercely, fighting for each other and for a Christ-centered marriage, every step of the way. Fierce Marriage is their story, but more than that, it is a call for married couples to put God first in their relationship, to measure everything they do and say to each other against what Christ did for them, and to see marriage not just as a relationship they should try to keep healthy but also as one worth fighting for in every situation. With the gospel as their foundation, Ryan and Selena offer hope and practical help for common struggles in marriage, including communication problems, sexual frustration, financial stress, family tension, screen-time disconnection, and unrealistic expectations.

Book excerpt: "Tells the story of a watershed trial that unfolded over twelve tense days in California in 2010. A trial that legalized same-sex marriage in our most populous state. A trial that interrogated the nature of marriage, the political status of gays and lesbians, the ideal circumstances for raising children, and the ability of direct democracy to protect fundamental rights. A trial that stands as the most potent argument for marriage equality this nation has ever seen. In telling the story of Hollingsworth v. Perry, the groundbreaking federal lawsuit against Proposition 8, Kenji Yoshino has also written a paean to the vanishing civil trial--an oasis of rationality in what is often a decidedly uncivil debate"--Dust jacket flap.

Book excerpt: One of the New York Times' most popular journalists presents groundbreaking scientific news about marriage. And, surprise: It's good news. We've all heard the statistic: Fifty percent of marriages end in divorce. It's enough to make many couples give up when the going gets rough, thinking that's what everybody else does. But what if it weren't true? What if, in fact, it's not only possible but often easier than you think to save a seemingly troubled relationship? These are the questions Tara Parker-Pope asked herself after her own divorce. An investigative journalist on the health and wellness beat, she turned to some of the top biologists, neuroscientists, psychologists, and other scientists for the facts about marriage and divorce. Those facts were more positive and provocative than she'd ever expected, and For Better offers page after page of astonishing, eye-opening good news. Parker-Pope presents the science behind why some marriages work and others don't; the biology behind why some spouses cheat and others remain faithful; the best diagnostic tools created by the most cutting-edge psychologists to assess the probability of success in getting married, staying married, or remarrying. There are questionnaires to uncover potentially damaging hidden attitudes toward spouses. There are tools to show the impact of routine, fresh activity and how small adjustments can make a huge difference. Tara Parker- Pope's genius is for exploring the science behind the big issues that affect our lives every day and translating that science into advice that we can use-every day. For Better is the definitive guide to the most profound relationship of our lives.

Book excerpt: THE STORM BEFORE THE CALM Angel H. Davis is not just a veteran marriage and family counselor who has seen God's healing grace at work in those she's counseled. She has been through a purging, rejuvenating storm in her own marriage and has survived to tell of the joy that comes in the morning. Strikingly personal and empathetic, Angel's guidelines for personal and marriage growth demonstrate how remarkably God can change two people even if only one devotes him- or herself to doing marriage God's way. Her book will help you discern the real enemy of your soul, how to change your marriage, and the way current trials set you up for future fulfillment. According to Angel, most marriages are neither a complete disaster nor "made in heaven." They face tribulation that can tempt anyone at one time or another to jump ship, yet that is almost never the right course. So since you're likely in a marriage that's among the majority, this book is almost certainly for you, no matter what storm may be blowing through your married life. ANGEL H. DAVIS is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Board Certified Professional Christian Counselor, who has been in practice since 1985. By way of her own inner healing, she discovered the spiritual and emotional health and wholeness available through the Lord. Since then, her passion is to see others set free by the "renewing of their minds." She and her husband Lee live just outside of Athens, Georgia, have been married more than 30 years, and have two grown daughters, Megan and Haley.

We've got the rings, the spouse, the sacrament--now our life together can really begin!" So it can be a shock when struggles and trials emerge. Frustrations. Arguments. Hurts, Feeling overwhelmed. Lack of unity. Lack of trust. Edward and Beth Sri, national Catholic presenters, vulnerably share their own experience of the joys and struggles of real married life. They remind us that the challenging aspects of a marriage are not only to be expected but are the very places Jesus wants to meet us and do his most important work. They are also the places that surprisingly can be a gateway to a greater love and a lasting joy."--Page [4] of cover.
