This book was released on 2023-01-11 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Travels and Adventures of James Massey" is a unique and satirical work of travel literature authored with the aid of Simon Tyssot de Patot, a French Huguenot writer. This book sticks out for its imaginitive storytelling and its commentary on the character of tour narratives of the early 18th century. In this fictitious journey account, de Patot creates the person James Massey, who embarks on a sequence of remarkable adventures. The narrative is supplied inside the first character, blurring the strains between truth and fiction. De Patot cleverly parodies the exaggerated and frequently sensationalized tour accounts of his generation, losing mild on the gullibility of readers and the malleable nature of reality in storytelling. "The Travels and Adventures of James Massey" is a pioneering work of satirical fiction that anticipates the literary techniques later popularized by writers like Jonathan Swift and Voltaire. It challenges the authenticity and reliability of tour narratives, supplying a clean angle on the style. De Patot's book stays a treasured piece of literature for its innovation and insightful critique of travel literature's conventions. It has been studied and favored for its impact on the development of satirical storytelling and its lasting observation at the function of fiction in shaping perceptions of distant lands and cultures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the novel, V oyages el avantures de] aques Masse, caused some thing of a stir during the first half of the eighteenth century, its author, Simon Tyssot de Patot (1655-1738), remained largely unknown in his lifetime, and it is only in this century that he has been recognized as one of the countless soldiers in the vast army of philosophes that assaulted the bastions of religious, political and sodallife in Europe of the late seven 1 teenth and early eighteenth centuries. Tyssot was a Huguenot who lived most of his life in Holland where he pursued a career as professor of mathematics in the sodal and cultural 1 Tyssot and his work seem to have been first brought to the attention of modem writers by the German critics during their investigation of the type of desert island or robinsonade literature that preceded and followed Defoe's Robinson Crusoe. The earliest reference I have found occurs in A. Kippenberg, Robinson in Deutschland bis zur Insel Felsenburg (1713-43), Hanover, 1892, pp. 66-67. Tyssot's name and work appear to have been first linked with the development of socialism in A. Lichtenberger, Le Socialisme au XVIIIe siecle, Paris, 1895, p. 44. Tyssot's Voyages et avantures de]aques Masse was discussed for its literary merits in A. LeBreton, Le Roman au dix huitieme siecle, Paris, 1898. LeBreton did not know that Tyssot was the author.
Book Synopsis The English Novel, 1700-1740 by : Robert Letellier
Download or read book The English Novel, 1700-1740 written by Robert Letellier and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2003-02-28 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The English novel written between 1700 and 1740 remains a comparatively neglected area. In addition to Daniel Defoe, whose Robinson Crusoe and Moll Flanders are landmarks in the history of English fiction, many other authors were at work. These included such women as Penelope Aubin, Jane Barker, Mary Davys, and Eliza Haywood, who made a considerable contribution to widening the range of emotional responses in fiction. These authors, and many others, continued writing in the genres inherited from the previous century, such as criminal biographies, the Utopian novel, the science fictional voyage, and the epistolary novel. This annotated bibliography includes entries for these works and for critical materials pertinent to them. The volume first seeks to establish the existing studies of the era, along with anthologies. It then provides entries for a wide-ranging selection of works which cover fictional, theoretical, historical, political, and cultural topics, to provide a comprehensive background to the unfolding and understanding of prose fiction in the early 18th century. This is followed by an alphabetical listing of novels, their editions, and any critical material available on each. The next section provides a chronological record of significant and enduring works of fiction composed or translated in this period. The volume concludes with extensive indexes.

Download or read book Novel Ventures written by Leah Orr and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eighteenth century British book trade marks the beginning of the literary marketplace as we know it. The lapsing of the Licensing Act in 1695 brought an end to pre-publication censorship of printed texts and restrictions on the number of printers and presses in Britain. Resisting the standard "rise of the novel" paradigm, Novel Ventures incorporates new research about the fiction marketplace to illuminate early fiction as an eighteenth-century reader or writer might have seen it. Through a consideration of all 475 works of fiction printed over the four decades from 1690 to 1730, including new texts, translations of foreign works, and reprints of older fiction, Leah Orr shows that the genre was much more diverse and innovative in this period than is usually thought. Contextual chapters examine topics such as the portrayal of early fiction in literary history, the canonization of fiction, concepts of fiction genres, printers and booksellers, the prices and physical manufacture of books, and advertising strategies to give a more complex picture of the genre in the print culture world of the early eighteenth century. Ultimately, Novel Ventures concludes that publishers had far more influence over what was written, printed, and read than authors did, and that they shaped the development of English fiction at a crucial moment in its literary history.
