Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chief Obafemi Awolowo: The Political Moses is a story of a man who dedicated the entirety of his life to serve humanity and the development of mankind. The Author makes use of the noun Moses to depict the tiresome journey of an activist who fought rigorously alongside others to gain independence for his people. The fact that his ambition to be president of Nigeria was foiled is in itself a matter of discussion transcending the Nigerian political debate till now. As late Chief Odumegwu Ojukwu once said Awolowo, the Best President Nigeria never had. The book investigates the celebrated treasonable felony of 1962; bringing into focus the case hearings and the political unrest of the period, party system and political parties in Nigeria, Nigeria electoral processes from Pre-colonial era to the fourth republic, review of political prisoners around the world, and making succinct recommendations for Nigeria electoral processes. Chief Obafemi Awolowo: the political Moses unravels a political betrayer by major party members of Action Group likening this to the betrayal of Jesus Christ by Judas Iscariots. It is a must read book for researchers, students of political science and law, lecturers, and anybody that aspires to be great.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the evolution of a distinctive Yoruba community, Remo, and the central role played in this process by the Remo-born Nationalist and Yoruba leader Obafemi Awolowo (1909-87). Since the Nineteenth Century, popular participation has played an important role in challenging or confirming local hierarchies in Remo. This historical dynamic had a significant impact on Awolowo's vision both for Yoruba and Nigerian politics. When he moved into national politics in the 1950s, his career at the national level also gave him the opportunity to shape Remo's political identity. Awolowo was both a product and a producer of Remo politics.Based on a subtle analysis of local-level politics, this book argues that traditional and modern participatory structures play an important role both in Yoruba politics and in the African postcolonial state. At the same time, its focus on Awolowo makes an important contribution to the scholarly debate on one of Nigeria's most important politicians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2015, Nigeria's voters cast out the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP). Here, A. Carl LeVan traces the political vulnerability of Africa's largest party in the face of elite bargains that facilitated a democratic transition in 1999. These 'pacts' enabled electoral competition but ultimately undermined the party's coherence. LeVan also crucially examines the four critical barriers to Nigeria's democratic consolidation: the terrorism of Boko Haram in the northeast, threats of Igbo secession in the southeast, lingering ethnic resentments and rebellions in the Niger Delta, and farmer-pastoralist conflicts. While the PDP unsuccessfully stoked fears about the opposition's ability to stop Boko Haram's terrorism, the opposition built a winning electoral coalition on economic growth, anti-corruption, and electoral integrity. Drawing on extensive interviews with a number of politicians and generals and civilians and voters, he argues that electoral accountability is essential but insufficient for resolving the representational, distributional, and cultural components of these challenges.

Book excerpt: With the introduction of globalization and domestic change pulsing through Nigeria, its citizens find themselves in a social, political, and economic transition period. After decades of military rule and political instability, Nigeria has reintroduced itself as a democratic state in 1999. This change has brought about questions of how to get Nigeria moving toward economic growth and social unity in the face of globalization, the polarization of Christians and Muslims in Africa, and crises such as HIV/AIDS. The Yoruba, one of Nigeria's most well-known and historically prevalent ethnic groups in Nigeria, has taken an active role in dealing with these issues. Whether motivated by a nationalist vision of a unified, successful Nigeria, or for their own interests in reclaiming political space and retaining Yoruba culture, the Yoruba have greatly contributed to discussions on this transitional era. Contributors to this work display a wide range of disciplines and viewpoints making this work accessible to readers familiar and unfamiliar to the Yoruba. The Yoruba in Transition captures views on the era, highlighting recommendations for this new Nigeria and emphasizing contemporary issues that the Yoruba face. The contributors, many of them Yoruba, illuminate the complexity of identity and how the Yoruba seek to communicate their values, project an image, and live their lives. Included are essays dealing with contemporary issues such as migration, health, agricultural production, cyber crime, and the role of women in Yoruba society. The Yoruba in Transition represents a rare recording of how people within and outside Nigeria view the new millennium for the Yoruba. "[T]he essays are well-written, analytical, and insightful. As a comprehensive and critical volume, Falola and Genova have succeeded in editing an important reader in Yoruba studies. This significant volume will be invaluable to scholars, public policy analysts, and lay readers of Yoruba and Nigerian studies." -- The Journal of the Royal African Society

Book excerpt: This book examines the political and economic philosophy of Chief Jeremiah Oyeniyi Obafemi Awolowo and his concepts of democratic socialism (Liberal Democratic Socialism). It studies how Chief Awolowo and his political parties, first the Action Group (AG) 1951-1966 and later the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) 1978-1983, acted in various Nigerian political settings. Chief Awolowo was a principled man, who by a Spartan self-discipline and understanding of himself, his accomplishments, failures and successes, was a fearless leader. He has set an example of leadership for a new generation of Nigerian politicians. He was not only a brilliant politician, but a highly cerebral thinker, statesman, dedicated manager, brilliant political economist, a Social Democrat, and a committed federalist. From all accounts, Chief Awolowo knew the worst and the best, laughter and sorrow, vilification and veneration, tribulations and triumphs, poverty and prosperity, failures and successes in life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Political Science Review is the official publication of the National Conference of Black Political Scientists. This series, now entering its fourth volume, includes significant scholarly research reflecting the diverse interests of scholars from various backgrounds who use different models, approaches, and methodologies. The central focus is on politics and policies that advantage or disadvantage groups because of race, ethnicity, gender, and other major variables. In his introduction to this volume, Matthew Holden describes the rationale for the creation of American racial stratification, and boldly shows how American intellectuals have helped reinforce that stratification. Several chapters discuss conflicts in contemporary views of the United States, ranging from a belief in its being a free society to the historical reality of the nation's background as a slave society. Other chapters address the international problem of racial stratification, concentrating on Nigeria and South Africa.

Book excerpt: The Gambia opened a new chapter in her history after 22 years of authoritarian rule under former dictator Yahya Jammeh, heralding the promise of a ‘New Gambia.’ The country is at a critical juncture in its transition from Jammeh’s autocratic rule to a fully-fledged democracy. The ambitious transitional processes include the Truth Reparations and Reconciliation Commission to create an official record of past abuses and crimes, the Constitutional Review Commission to draft a new Constitution, and the permanent National Human Rights Commission to build a human rights culture. The Gambia in transition: Towards a new constitutional order is a diverse collection of timely, rigorous, and insightful essays on human rights, constitutional reform, rule of law and democratic governance. It serves as an important reference for academics, policymakers, researchers, civil society organisations, human rights defenders, learners, and the public at large.
