Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twins present special problems for the study of lateralisation, both psychological and biological. Central to both areas is the common observation that identical (monozygotic) twins can differ in their laterality. In the case of hand preference, this is most obvious in the one in five twin pairs where one is right-handed and the other left-handed. A similar problem can be found morphologically, not only in normal anatomical traits, such as hair whorls, which can be in opposite direction, but also in the rare condition of conjoined twins, where it is frequently the case that one twin has its heart and viscera in the normal orientation (situs solitus) and the other is mirror reversed (situs inversus). This special issue of Laterality brings together papers on these different aspects of twinning. Two of the papers are biological, one providing a detailed analysis of the laterality of artificially conjoined twins created by fusing two different species of newt, and the other overviewing the recent developments in understanding the molecular biology of visceral lateralisation in relation to twinning. The other papers concern aspects of cerebral lateralisation in twins, one providing a much needed meta-analysis and critical overview of the twin literature, another providing detailed data from a large study of handedness in twins, a third asking about the almost neglected question of footedness, earedness and eyedness in twins, and the fourth looking at lateralised cognitive processing. Between them these papers extend the literature on lateralisation in twins, and reinforce the need to consider the lateralisation of twins from biological, neurological and psychological perspectives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lateralization in the Nervous System reviews various aspects of lateralization in the nervous system, with emphasis on approaches such as the investigation of turning tendencies and electrocortical indices of hemispheric asymmetry. Experimental paradigms and outcomes that are applicable to both human and nonhuman species are highlighted. This book is comprised of 26 chapters and begins with an overview of functional lateralization in nonhuman species such as monkeys. Brain asymmetry is examined in context with other biological asymmetries in the quest for general mechanisms and principles of lateralization. The problem of inheritance, embryology, and development of asymmetry is also discussed from a variety of environmentalist and nativist perspectives. Highly suggestive invertebrate and avian models for lateralization are presented, along with the evidence for cerebral dominance and handedness in nonhuman species. Human clinical neuropsychological findings, such as the effects of unilateral cortical and thalamic lesions and the syndrome of unilateral neglect, are considered, together with asymmetries in perception and attention. This monograph will be of interest to psychologists (physiological, cognitive, developmental, and clinical), behavioral biologists, neuroscientists, neurologists, and psychiatrists, as well as to scholars and educators from the humanities and social sciences who are concerned with the nature and biological bases of left-right differences in brain, behavior, and thinking.

These frogs have helped unlock key fundamental developmental and cellular processes that have led to important scientific breakthroughs and have had practical application in embryology, cancer research and regenerative medicine. Xenopus Development is a vital resource on the biology and development of these key model organisms, and will be a great tool to researchers using these frogs in various disciplines of biological science. Xenopus Development is divided into four sections, the first three highlight key processes in Xenopus development from embryo to metamophosis. These sections focus on the cellular processes, organogenesis and embryo development. The final section highlights novel techniques and approaches being used in Xenopus research. Providing thorough and detailed coverage, Xenopus Development, will be a timely and welcome volume for those working in cell and molecular biology, genetics, developmental biology and biomedical research. Provides broad overview of the developmental biology of both Xenopus laevis and Xenopus tropicalis Explores cellular to systems development in key biomedical model organisms Timely synthesis of the field of Xenopus biology Highlights key biomedical and basic biological findings unlocked by Xenopus

Book excerpt: This book describes human development including sexual reproduction and stem cell research with the development of model organisms that are accessible to genetic and experimental analysis in readily understandable texts and 315 multi-colored graphics. The introductory account of model organisms selected from the entire animal kingdom presents general principles, which are then outlined in subsequent chapters devoted to, for example, sexual development; genes controlling development and their contemporary molecular-analysis methods; production of clones and transgenic animals; development of the nervous and circulatory systems; regenerative medicine and ageing. Finally the evolution of developmental toolkits and novelties is discussed including the genetic basis of the enlargement of the human forebrain. Separate boxes are devoted to controversial questions such as the benefits and problems of prenatal diagnostics or the construction of ancient body plans.
