Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text provides a study of the education policy scholarship of leadership. It examines the ways in which concepts of educational leadership and management have evolved historically and culturally, reviewing contemporary debates about the nature of school leadership.; The question of what school leadership could and should be is at the centre of political, ideological and educational debate in many societies. These debates involve cultural conservatives, New Right marketeers, democrats and community educators, feminists and critical theorists as well as school governors, headteachers and teachers, parents, community members and school students.; These debates are reviewed and the theoretical context is illuminated by fieldwork accounts derived from the research participation of 88 headteachers working in English schools, both primary and secondary. Such accounts provide an insight into the challenges of contemporary school leadership as headteachers face new power relationships, new curriculum responsibilities and management and marketing cultures which generate moral, ethical and professional dilemmas for many of them.

Book excerpt: Published in 1989 in conjunction with the Council of Europe, this book is a major source of reference for those interested in the comparative study of primary education in Europe. Whilst there is much material available at secondary level, there is little information about the organisation and practice of primary education in different European countries. This book, based on reports and case studies collected by the Council of Europe as part of its five year project Innovation in Primary Education in Europe remedies this providing an essential resource in the area. Divided into six sections, each contributed to by member state of the Council of Europe, this book covers topics including organisation policy and practice, professionalism in primary school teachers and innovation in primary education.

Those involved in management in schools are being urged to develop their management skills and many courses are developed for this purpose. At the same time many new issues have arisen which require attention from managers in schools. These include: staff appraisal, curriculum evaluation and action research. This book examines major topics of present concern in the management of secondary schools. It presents much new thinking on these major problems and reports on particular initiatives. The aim is to help improve practice, both by helping trainers focus their courses correctly and by encouraging those involved in school management to approach their work more purposefully. School management is treated from the perspective of the industrial trainer, the Local Education Authority, higher education and the school practitioner.

Book excerpt: `The book has a wide appeal to existing heads, aspiring heads, lecturers and writers about headship. The contributors to this book have lifted the curtain on the realities of headships and, in the process, have added to our understanding of what school leadership is all about these days′ - Managing Schools Today Practitioners and trainers understand how vitally important school leadership is to the practice of headship. Living Headship presents the experiences of successful heads working in primary and secondary schools. We hear in their accounts the authentic voices of heads determined to ensure that their leadership enhances the performance of their schools. Some have been in post for many years, and have been able to implement and sustain and reconsider their vision. Others have moved into schools with difficulties and brought them out of special measures. All demonstrate a profound commitment to the education of children and a determination to find ways to take their schools forward. Many of the chapters are underpinned by research, and all are based on a rigorous consideration of particular issues. To set these analyses in context, the editors present an essential, in-depth history of the conceptualization of headship. The deep commitment to learning and the challenge presented here, make this book essential reading for practitioners, trainers and all concerned about the future of education.

Book excerpt: First published in 1990, the Handbook of Educational Ideas and Practices was written for practitioners and students in the field of education and its related services and was designed to appeal to educationists no matter what their nationality. Focusing mainly on compulsory schooling, it provides summaries of the thinking, research findings, and innovatory practices current at the time. However, the book is also careful to present a complete picture of education and therefore includes a separate section for education beyond school which covers pre-school level, post-secondary level, and adult and continuing education. There are also other chapters dealing with aspects of organization, curriculum, and teaching in various forms of tertiary education. Indeed, each topic has been discussed by an acknowledged expert writing in sufficient detail in order to resist trivialization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1986. Hitherto, most educational managers, including head teachers and senior staff in schools, have been expected to carry out their management tasks without any formal training. Recent initiatives, however, are changing this and all educational managers are now being encouraged to undertake some form of training. This book provides a framework for the study of educational management. Management in other professions has been a major concern for a long time and this book selects from this existing literature, theory and experience (for example from management studies and business studies) and relates relevant material to the context of education. It looks at the major themes and problems in educational management, discusses the appropriate theories and shows how good practices may be applied.

Book excerpt: The permanent presence of Islam and Muslims (approximately 7 million) is a comparatively recent phenomenon in most countries of the European Community. By far the greater majority of them consists of former inhabitants of the Muslim world who migrated to the West for economic or political reasons after the Second World War. Over the last decades many initiatives have been launched by Muslim communities to create infrastructural provisions for their religious life, within the existing legal and social frameworks. In fact, all countries of the European Community share the principles of religious freedom and non-discrimination in their respective Constitutions. However, the precise way in which these principles are interpreted and applied to Islam depends largely on the historical traditions concerning the relations between State and Religion, which differ from one country to another. The present book is mainly based on the numerous articles and books concerning the public status of Islam in the various countries of Western Europe which were published between 1987 and 1994. First of all, a comparative study is offered of the relation between State and Religion, according to the constitutional traditions of the member states of the European Community. Secondly, the authors discuss the opportunities and obstacles in the realization of an organizational structure by the Muslim communities. Attention is paid, among others, to the foundation of mosques, the position of imams, and the attempts to create representative bodies on the national level which can serve as negotiating partners with the national governments. In a separate chapter, attention is paid to Islam as a minority religion from a theoretical point of view. Then follows a discussion of the possibilities for the observance of islamic customs and rituals, such as religious holidays, dietary laws and dress rules. With regard to Islamic religious education attention is paid in the last chapter to religious education within mosques, public, Christian and Islamic schools. At the end there is an extensive bibliography with an index of subjects and countries.
