Book Synopsis Toxicity of Three Herbicides (butyl, Isooctyl, and Propylene Glycol Butyl Ether Esters of 2,4-D) to Cutthroat Trout and Lake Trout by : D. F. Woodward
Download or read book Toxicity of Three Herbicides (butyl, Isooctyl, and Propylene Glycol Butyl Ether Esters of 2,4-D) to Cutthroat Trout and Lake Trout written by D. F. Woodward and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two formulations of the herbicide 2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid) - the butyl ester (BE) and the propylene glycol butyl ether ester (PGBEE) -- had 96-h LC50's to cutthroat trout and lake trout ranging from 490 to 1,200 microgram/liter in static tests. A third formulation -- the isooctyl ester (IE) -- was not toxic to cutthroat trout or lake trout at concentrations below 60.000 microgram/liter. The butyl ester (2,4-D BE) was slightly more toxic than 2,4-D PGBEE, and the toxicity of both esters increased as water temperature decreased.

Book Synopsis Veterans and Agent Orange by : Committee to Review the Health Effects in Vietnam Veterans of Exposure to Herbicides
Download or read book Veterans and Agent Orange written by Committee to Review the Health Effects in Vietnam Veterans of Exposure to Herbicides and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1994-01-15 with total page 791 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have U.S. military personnel experienced health problems from being exposed to Agent Orange, its dioxin contaminants, and other herbicides used in Vietnam? This definitive volume summarizes the strength of the evidence associating exposure during Vietnam service with cancer and other health effects and presents conclusions from an expert panel. Veterans and Agent Orange provides a historical review of the issue, examines studies of populations, in addition to Vietnam veterans, environmentally and occupationally exposed to herbicides and dioxin, and discusses problems in study methodology. The core of the book presents What is known about the toxicology of the herbicides used in greatest quantities in Vietnam. What is known about assessing exposure to herbicides and dioxin. What can be determined from the wide range of epidemiological studies conducted by different authorities. What is known about the relationship between exposure to herbicides and dioxin, and cancer, reproductive effects, neurobehavioral disorders, and other health effects. The book describes research areas of continuing concern and offers recommendations for further research on the health effects of Agent Orange exposure among Vietnam veterans. This volume will be critically important to both policymakers and physicians in the federal government, Vietnam veterans and their families, veterans organizations, researchers, and health professionals.

Book excerpt: Herbicide use is a common component of many weed management strategies in both agricultural and non-crop settings. However, herbicide use practices and recommendations are continuously updated and revised to provide control of ever-changing weed compositions and to preserve efficacy of current weed control options. Herbicides - Current Research and Case Studies in Use provides information about current trends in herbicide use and weed control in different land and aquatic settings as well as case studies in particular weed control situations.
Book Synopsis Herbicide Contamination of Surface Runoff Waters by : John O. Evans
Download or read book Herbicide Contamination of Surface Runoff Waters written by John O. Evans and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Field and laboratory studies of the movement of herbicides were conducted to determine their potential as contaminants in irrigation return flow. Special emphasis was given to the use of herbicides for vegetation control along ditches, canals and watersheds where high dosages are required to control the excessive growth of grasses and broadleaved weeds. The following herbicides have been studies: substituted urea (diuron), triazines (summitol and atrazine), phenoxyacetic acid (2, 4-D and 2, 4, 5-T) and a substituted pyridine (picloram). The greatest tendency for transport of herbicides in water coming in contact with soils occurs during the initial storms following spray application. If the intensity of the initial precipitation is not sufficient to cause movement across the soil, the danger of herbicide movement is essentially eliminated. The highest concentratoins (ppm) of herbicide observed in surface waters were 1.8, 0.5, 4.2 and 2.7 for diuron, summitol, 2, 4-D, 2, 4, 5-T and picloram, respectively. These levels were observed immediately below treated areas receiving the higher recommended dosages of the herbicides. All herbicide concentrations dropped below the limit of detection within a few hundred meters below the sprayed areas. Presumably, soil filtration, adsorption and dilution are primarily responsible for the loss of herbicides from water.
