Book Synopsis The Lightest Metals by : Timothy P. Hanusa
Download or read book The Lightest Metals written by Timothy P. Hanusa and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-10-12 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first seven metals in the periodic table are lithium, beryllium, sodium, magnesium, aluminium, potassium and calcium, known collectively as the “lightest metals”. The growing uses of these seven elements are enmeshing them ever more firmly into critical areas of 21st century technology, including energy storage, catalysis, and various applications of nanoscience. This volume provides comprehensive coverage of the fundamentals and recent advances in the science and technology of the lightest metals. Opening chapters of the book describe major physical and chemical properties of the metals, their occurrence and issues of long-term availability. The book goes on to disucss a broad range of chemical features, including low oxidation state chemistry, organometallics, metal-centered NMR spectroscopy, and cation-π interactions. Current and emerging applications of the metals are presented, including lithium-ion battery technology, hydrogen storage chemistry, superconductor materials, transparent ceramics, nano-enhanced catalysis, and research into photosynthesis and photoelectrochemical cells. The content from this book will be added online to the Encyclopedia of Inorganic and Bioinorganic Chemistry: http://www.wileyonlinelibrary.com/ref/eibc
Book Synopsis Thermal Expansion of SNAP Materials by : J. D. Watrous
Download or read book Thermal Expansion of SNAP Materials written by J. D. Watrous and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermal expansion characteristics were determined for the fuel-moderator, reflector, cladding, and engineering materials within the SNAP-2 core vessel. Values were determined for AISI Type 347 stainless steel, Hastelloy N, beryllium, zirconium, zirconium hydride, and zirconium-uranium hydrides, from room temperature to temperatures greater than 1300°F. Derived equations were calculated for these materials, using a least squares analysis.

Book excerpt: A quick and easy to use source for qualified thermal properties of metals and alloys. The data tables are arranged by material hierarchy, with summary tables sorted by property value. Values are given for a range of high and low temperatures. Short technical discussions at the beginning of each chapter are designed to refresh the reader's understanding of the properties and units covered in that section

Book Synopsis Magnesia, Alumina, Beryllia Ceramics: Fabrication, Characterization and Properties by : Allen Alper
Download or read book Magnesia, Alumina, Beryllia Ceramics: Fabrication, Characterization and Properties written by Allen Alper and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High Temperature Oxides, Magnesia, Alumina, Beryllia Ceramics: Fabrication, Characterization and Properties is the third part of a series of four books on high temperature oxides. This text is divided into five chapters that deal with the research and technical advances in selected refractory oxides, such as magnesia, alumina, and beryllium oxide. Chapter 1 discusses the preparation, characterization, thermal and mechanical properties, and application to the electrical and electronic fields of beryllium oxide. Chapter 2 examines the mechanical behavior of single crystals of magnesia, including its dislocation motion and interactions, and crack nucleation and growth. Chapter 3 describes the significance of diffusive and mechanical properties of sintered alumina and magnesia. Chapter 4 deals with the process mechanisms, control, and limitations of hot-pressing, with particular emphasis on the practical applications of hot-pressed refractory oxides. Chapter 5 explores the possible benefits of hot-working, operational processes involved in such working, and the applications of fabricated oxides. This book is of great value to engineers, materials scientists, and students with advanced materials science courses.
Book Synopsis Engineering Properties of Nickel and Nickel Alloys by : John Everhart
Download or read book Engineering Properties of Nickel and Nickel Alloys written by John Everhart and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nickel is probably the most versatile of the metallic elements. Among alloys containing nickel are some having high corrosion resistance and others that retain excellent strength and ductility from temperatures approaching ab solute zero to those near 2000 F. Some nickel alloys are strongly magnetic, others are virtually nonmagnetic; some have low rates of thermal expansion, others have high rates; some have high electrical resistivities; some have practically constant moduli of elasticity; one has an "elastic" memory. In addition, nickel is magnetostrictive. With this wide range of characteristics, it is not surprising that there are several thousand alloys containing nickel. It is impossible to consider all of these compositions in this publication and, therefore, several alloys in each of a number of categories have been selected to indicate the properties to be expected of the group. Low-alloy and constructional nickel-containing steels have been excluded on two grounds. To do them justice would require excessive space and, in addition, their applications differ generally from these of the materials under discussion. On the other hand, nickel-containing stainkss steels have been included because many of their applications fall into the same areas as those of a number of the high-nickel alloys. Many of the compositions discussed are proprietary alloys and they are protected by trademarks. A list of the trademarks and their owners is in cluded in the appendix.
