Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was mainly written while I stayed at the Catholic University of Louvain. Professor Anton P. Barten was the one who did not only give me a warm welcome in Louvain, but also supported my research with most valuable comments and constructive criticisms. In addition I benefitted from dis cussions with Erik Schokkaert, Denis de Crombrugghe and Jo Baras on various subjects, such as the small-sample correction of Chapter 9. The arduous task of transferring my neat handwriting into a readable typescript was excellently taken care of by Brs. E. Crabbe and notably Brs. F. Duij sens, even after working hours. Mrs. A. Molders prevented me of making serious abuse of the English language. My admiration for Carien, finally, is an exponential function of the patience and enthusiasm with which she sup ported my research. Chapter I is a general introduction to the subject of linkage models, and it contains few mathematical elaborations. Chapters 2 to 4 use more, but elementary, mathematics, and treat several aspects related to the deriva tion, interpretation and estimation of linkage models. Chapter 2 deals vii tll the theory of import allocation models, Chapter J treats the problem of defining and interpreting elasticities of substitution, while Chapter 4 is concerned with the econometric problems related to the estimation of mul tivariate models with linear restrictions, such as import allocation models.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its establishment in 1966, the Community Development Journal has maintained its position as the leading international journal for practitioners, academics and policy-makers across the world. To celebrate its fortieth anniversary, the CDJ's Editorial Board commissioned three highly experienced members, two of them former editors, to bring together a representative sample of the best writing from the Journal. The thirty chapters in this volume, including an entirely new introductory contextual essay, are drawn from every corner of the world, demonstrating the richness and diversity of community development theory and practice. Despite this diversity, the changing foci of community development and the varying contexts in which it is practised, the chapters all reflect the commitment of community development theorists and practitioners to engage critically with the key values of social justice -- equality, fairness, participatory development and respect for difference. This book will become a key text for those concerned with implementing these values in practice.
Book Synopsis Rural Development Theory and Practice by : Ruth McAreavey
Download or read book Rural Development Theory and Practice written by Ruth McAreavey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-06-02 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rural development is inherently viewed as a positive thing; it is seen as something that brings together groups of individuals with automatic positive implications and outcomes. Policy rhetoric frequently uses popular terms such as involvement, participation and power sharing to describe rural development activities. However, the reality of experience on the ground does not necessarily concur with these ideals. It is not always clear who ultimately benefits from rural development: the State, the community or rural development practitioners. This book critically analyses key concepts associated with rural development policy and practice, and using the concepts of power and micro-politics to analyze rhetoric and reality, reveals the intricacies of rural development. Challenging popular ideals associated with rural development, this book presents the notion of rural development less as a spontaneous, all-inclusive affair and more as a limited, controlled and exclusive process. Ultimately it contends that within structures of rural governance, a regeneration power elite predominates development and regeneration activities.
