Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Ricketts was a man of remarkable versatility. In the 1890s he ranked with Aubrey Beardsley as a powerful influence on book illustrators, and in his work for the theatre he rivalled Edward Gordon Craig. As an art critic he was compared with his exact contemporary Roger Fry; as a connoisseur he could contest the view of Bernard Berenson. In The World of Charles Ricketts Joseph Darracott explores and illustrates Ricketts?s major areas of artistic commitment and considers his significance in relation both to his contemporaries and to later generations. Although Ricketts and his close friend Charles Channon are mentioned in many memoirs of London in the 1890s, they have remained little known. Yet Ricketts's achievements are striking. His illustrations for The Vale Press and for other publishers are remarkable for their directness. His book on Titian was unequalled in its understanding of the Italian master. His stage work included the set and costume designs for the first production of George Bernard Shaw's St Joan and for a new production in the 1920s of The Mikado by Gilbert & Sullivan. Ricketts and Shannon were in their time among the most knowledgeable connoisseurs of Oriental, particularly Japanese, art. The majority of items in their Oriental collection was left to the British Museum, while their Old Master drawings and many other elements of their collection were bequeathed to Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. Such was Ricketts?s reputation that, in 1915, he was offered, and turned down, the position of Director of the National Gallery in London. But later he became the advisor to the National Gallery of Canada in its formative years. Ricketts was a key figure in the London art world from the 1890s to 1930 as an illustrator and painter, jewellery and theatre designer, art critic and collector. His circle of friends included Oscar Wilde, Walter Sickert, W.B. Yeats, George Bernard Shaw and William Rothenstein who remembered Ricketts as 'the artistic Warwick of the age'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first major study of the life and times of Charles Ricketts (1866-1931), whose spririted career encompassed many aspects of late Victorian and Edwardian culture--including book and theatre design, painting, sculpture, and art criticism--and whose friends included Yeats, Thomas Moore, Housman, and Bottomley. Drawing on a wide range of material, much of it unpublished or newly discovered, Delaney reveals a man of strong opinions and artistic convictions, a fierce opponent of Postimpressionism and modernism who was noted for his wit, liveliness, generosity, and versatility. His story gives a fascinating look at the cultural and artistic life of England before and after the turn of the century.

Book excerpt: Eight short pieces by Ricketts with six illustrations by the author (printed as brownish red silhouettes against a blank background), published posthumously. It is not known precisely what Ricketts intended for these pieces, as some were first intended by be presented by Ricketts as his translations from the French and ascribed to a previously unknown (and completely imaginary) poet, Jean Paul Raymond. But others of the pieces are signed by Ricketts in his own name. Each is dedicated to a friend of Ricketss'. Not particularly an accomplished fictionalist at any time, he nonetheless provided interesting, if unusually constructed, stories in this beautifully produced edition.

Book excerpt: A highly personal memoir of Oscar Wilde, and a close copy of the 1932 original, which was limited to 800 copies Reprinted here for the first time since the limited edition of 1932, this is one of the most evocative and touching memoirs ever written about Oscar Wilde and the circles he moved in. Charles Ricketts was one of his closest friends; he also worked on stage productions and books with Wilde. Shortly before he died he wrote this account of his friendship with Wilde, partly as an imagined conversation with a fictitious French writer, Jean Paul Raymond. The memoir was printed by one of the great book designers of the following generation, Francis Meynell. This edition reproduces that original design, including the spectacular cover based by Ricketts on his designs for Salomé. An afterword by Matthew Sturgis puts the work in the context of the 1880s and 1890s, of Wilde's astonishing success and terrible downfall.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The English Theatrical Avant-Garde, 1900–1925 unearths an extensive range of hitherto forgotten or ignored theatre practices. In doing so it reveals some of the well-known figures of the early twentieth-century English theatre in a strikingly new light. It fluently describes an intensity of innovation and experiment that together made the Edwardian theatre rather more radical, and rather more queer, than we’ve ever thought. Where the majority of writing on the early twentieth-century theatrical avant-garde is concerned with European movements and experiments, English activity of the period is often seen as parochial and conservative – mainly realism and issues-based drama. This book presents a new model of how avant-gardes might work; a model based not on masculine individualism but on communal inclusion. In describing this fascinating material, the author introduces us to many new figures and shows familiar ones in different ways: there’s Florence Farr, independent woman; Bob Trevelyan, radical pacifist and music drama pioneer; Granville Barker doing fairy plays while de-dramatising drama; Laurence Housman, socialist, homosexual, scripting St Francis; and the oddly modern J.M. Barrie. Together they made theatre practices rich in their diversity but consistent in their attempt to be new, producing a theatrical avant-garde unlike any other. This is a vital and indispensable new study for scholars and students of early twentieth-century theatre in England and beyond.
