Racine (Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley) finds Basil (ca. 330-379) a valuable witness in that regard because he quotes abundantly and at length, apparently coping from a written text. A similar study has been conducted on his brother, Gregory of Nyssa (ca. 335-394), so the combination adds much to the knowledge of the New Testament text in use in Cappadocia during the fourth century. The study is slightly revised from his October 2000 Ph. D. dissertation for the University of St. Michael's College. Distributed by Aspen. Runesson examines various assumptions regarding the criteria of judgment in each case and finds that Matthew does not support some of the most popular slogans in Christian theology. The results and implications for our historical understanding of Christian origins and our theological estimation of Matthew’s place in that story will be of vital interest to scholars and students for years to come.
