It has beat us to those caves two or three times now, and I'm itching to catch it and if Old Lead and Old Hunter strike its trail hot to-night they'll pick it up sure. I guess Roy and Will will want. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mexican Papers The object of these publications is to draw the attention of the mercantile and industrial classes in the United States, to the national importance of the Mexican question; and to place before them information respecting Mexico, her peo ple and her institutions, with the view of correcting public opinion on some highly important points, which, in my judg ment, are entirely ignored, or thoroughly misconceived. These subjects will be explained with reference to the vital interests the American people have in Mexico, not omitting to touch, suggestively, upon those intimate relations which, sooner or later, must be established between the two republics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mexican Problems The recent triumph of the Liberal or Popular Party in Mexico, after almost 4 years of struggle, presents a unique opportunity for the carrying of certain economic changes which will destroy forever the dangerous political power of those egotistical groups composed of big landowners, who up to now have maintained the working classes in a state of slavery and ignorance. It is only recently that the conspiracy of si lence in regard to the monopoly of the land, - the censurable policy of Porfirio Diaz and; of Huerta - was broken; and as there are still many educated people in the Mexican Federation who are not acquainted with the facts in the case, 1 shall dedicate this chapter to the his tory of the land. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mexican Sphinx Iiwill not commit the injustice of believing that the erroneous Opinions so often heard about my native country are intended as a gratuitous offence, as during the nine years that I have lived among the American people I have had occasion to know them well, and am convinced that later they will do us justice. These opinions are merely the result of an error, which cannot be eradicated if false historical representations are allowed to go um contradicted, and thus further affirm prejudices by the silence of those who can and ought to dissipate them. If a citizen of what ever nationality has knowledge of defamations of his country, and does not endeavor, as in duty bound, to make clear the truth, he is not worthy of his own country nor of the respect and consideration of the country in which he lives. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Siege of the Alamo: A Mexico-Texan Tale In offering this production to the reading public, unlike a great many literary aspirants, I have no excuse to plead. It was not published at the urgent request of friends and relatives like the generality of books now a days, but was simply an act of my own rashness, for which no one is accountable but myself. The story of the Alamo, and of those who fell there in the defense of Texan liberty, has always seemed to me a subject worthy of something more than mere prosaic mention. And though several poems have already been written about it, none of them as yet seem to have succeeded in acquiring anything more than local fame. For that reason I may now be allowed to present mine, although it should be to share even a worse fate. It is needless to say, that I have not adhered strictly to the history of the Alamo in writing this poem. This fact all readers sufficiently acquainted with its history will observe. While the siege actually lasted eleven days, here it only occupies two. Had I celebrated the full number of days, it would have been necessary, in my opinion, to have written a poem with eleven parts, devoting one part to each day, and to do this it would indeed have required the pen of a Virgil or a Homer to accomplish successfully. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Frontier Knight: A Story of Early Texan Border-Life The sun was shining gloriously across level sweeps of blue grass meadow-land, and sending its beams through the windows of a plain, substantial, country house, where it made squares of brightness on the whitewashed walls, sharply outlining the shadows, and touching to gold the fair hair of a girl who sat motionless on a low stool near the window. She was thinking intently and did not heed the entrance of an older girl who glanced at her with a smile and began to busy herself about the room. Finally the girl at the window gave a deep sigh and stretched her hands above her head. "Oh, is it dinner time, Christine?" she said. "Very near," was the reply. "What a brown study you were in, Alison; you must have been miles away." "And so I was. I must decide, you know." "Yes, I do know." There was a serious note in Christine's voice. "And have you decided?" she asked after a pause. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Texan Star, the Story of a Great Fight for Liberty The Texan Star, while a complete story in itself, is the first of three, projected by the author, and based upon the Texan struggle for liberty against the power of Mexico. This revolution, epic in its nature, and crowded with heroism and great events, divides itself naturally into three parts. The first phase begins in Mexico with the treacherous imprisonment of Austin, the Texan leader, the rise of Santa Anna and his attempt, through bad faith, to dis arm the Texans and leave them powerless before the Indians. It culminates in the rebellion of the Texans, and their capture, in the face of great odds, of San Antonio, the seat of the Mexican power in the north. The second phase is the coming of Santa Anna with an overwhelming force, the fall of the Alamo, the mas sacre of Goliad and the dark days of Texas. Yet the period of gloom is relieved by the last stand of Crockett, Bowie, and their famous comrades. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
