Book excerpt: Economic Model Predictive Control (EMPC) is a control strategy that moves process operation away from the steady-state paradigm toward a potentially time-varying operating strategy to improve process profitability. The EMPC literature is replete with evidence that this new paradigm may enhance process profits when a model of the chemical process provides a sufficiently accurate representation of the process dynamics. Systems using EMPC often neglect the dynamics associated with equipment and are often neglected when modeling a chemical process. Recent studies have shown they can significantly impact the effectiveness of an EMPC system. Concentrating on valve behavior in a chemical process, this monograph develops insights into the manner in which equipment behavior should impact the design process for EMPC and to provide a perspective on a number of open research topics in this direction. Written in tutorial style, this monograph provides the reader with a full literature review of the topic and demonstrates how these techniques can be adopted in a practical system.

Book excerpt: The combined mathematic and heuristic based approach is proposed for establishing the plantwide control structure in this dissertation. The proposed approach takes advantages of both heuristic based and mathematic based approaches to develop the appropriate plantwide control structures. In heuristic part, sets of controlled variables and manipulated variables are selected followed by establishing of the obvious control loops. In mathematic part, the dynamic performance-based optimization is proposed for establishing the plantwide control structures. The optimization problem is formulated as a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP). The objective function is presented as an integral of the time-weighted absolute error (ITAE) of all measurements and manipulated variables in the face of disturbances. A discrete state-space model is used as the process model in the optimization problem. The proposed approach is investigated on the Tennessee Eastman (TE) process. The obtained plantwide control structures are compared with the earlier work given by Luyben et al. (1999). In dynamic simulation, the performance of the plantwide control structures is evaluated in the face of disturbances and setpoint changing. The simulation results show that the obtained plantwide control structures give the appropriate responses compares with those of Luyben et al. (1999).

Book excerpt: A Real- Time Approach to Process Control provides the reader with both a theoretical and practical introduction to this increasingly important approach. Assuming no prior knowledge of the subject, this text introduces all of the applied fundamentals of process control from instrumentation to process dynamics, PID loops and tuning, to distillation, multi-loop and plant-wide control. In addition, readers come away with a working knowledge of the three most popular dynamic simulation packages. The text carefully balances theory and practice by offering readings and lecture materials along with hands-on workshops that provide a 'virtual' process on which to experiment and from which to learn modern, real time control strategy development. As well as a general updating of the book specific changes include: A new section on boiler control in the chapter on common control loops A major rewrite of the chapters on distillation column control and multiple single-loop control schemes The addition of new figures throughout the text Workshop instructions will be altered to suit the latest versions of HYSYS, ASPEN and DYNSIM simulation software A new solutions manual for the workshop problems

This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wastewater treatment plants are large non-linear systems subject to large perturbations in wastewater flow rate, load and composition. Nevertheless these plants have to be operated continuously, meeting stricter and stricter regulations. Many control strategies have been proposed in the literature for improved and more efficient operation of wastewater treatment plants. Unfortunately, their evaluation and comparison – either practical or based on simulation – is difficult. This is partly due to the variability of the influent, to the complexity of the biological and biochemical phenomena and to the large range of time constants (from a few minutes to several days). The lack of standard evaluation criteria is also a tremendous disadvantage. To really enhance the acceptance of innovative control strategies, such an evaluation needs to be based on a rigorous methodology including a simulation model, plant layout, controllers, sensors, performance criteria and test procedures, i.e. a complete benchmarking protocol. This book is a Scientific and Technical Report produced by the IWA Task Group on Benchmarking of Control Strategies for Wastewater Treatment Plants. The goal of the Task Group includes developing models and simulation tools that encompass the most typical unit processes within a wastewater treatment system (primary treatment, activated sludge, sludge treatment, etc.), as well as tools that will enable the evaluation of long-term control strategies and monitoring tasks (i.e. automatic detection of sensor and process faults). Work on these extensions has been carried out by the Task Group during the past five years, and the main results are summarized in Benchmarking of Control Strategies for Wastewater Treatment Plants. Besides a description of the final version of the already well-known Benchmark Simulation Model no. 1 (BSM1), the book includes the Benchmark Simulation Model no. 1 Long-Term (BSM1_LT) – with focus on benchmarking of process monitoring tasks – and the plant-wide Benchmark Simulation Model no. 2 (BSM2). Book excerpt: Early and accurate fault detection and diagnosis for modern chemical plants can minimise downtime, increase the safety of plant operations, and reduce manufacturing costs. The process-monitoring techniques that have been most effective in practice are based on models constructed almost entirely from process data. The goal of the book is to present the theoretical background and practical techniques for data-driven process monitoring. Process-monitoring techniques presented include: Principal component analysis; Fisher discriminant analysis; Partial least squares; Canonical variate analysis. The text demonstrates the application of all of the data-driven process monitoring techniques to the Tennessee Eastman plant simulator - demonstrating the strengths and weaknesses of each approach in detail. This aids the reader in selecting the right method for his process application. Plant simulator and homework problems in which students apply the process-monitoring techniques to a nontrivial simulated process, and can compare their performance with that obtained in the case studies in the text are included. A number of additional homework problems encourage the reader to implement and obtain a deeper understanding of the techniques. The reader will obtain a background in data-driven techniques for fault detection and diagnosis, including the ability to implement the techniques and to know how to select the right technique for a particular application.

Book excerpt: An apparently appropriate control scheme for PEM fuel cells may actually lead to an inoperable plant when it is connected to other unit operations in a process with recycle streams and energy integration. PEM Fuel Cells with Bio-Ethanol Processor Systems presents a control system design that provides basic regulation of the hydrogen production process with PEM fuel cells. It then goes on to construct a fault diagnosis system to improve plant safety above this control structure. PEM Fuel Cells with Bio-Ethanol Processor Systems is divided into two parts: the first covers fuel cells and the second discusses plants for hydrogen production from bio-ethanol to feed PEM fuel cells. Both parts give detailed analyses of modeling, simulation, advanced control, and fault diagnosis. They give an extensive, in-depth discussion of the problems that can occur in fuel cell systems and propose a way to control these systems through advanced control algorithms. A significant part of the book is also given over to computer-aided engineering software tools that can be used to evaluate the dynamic performance of the overall plant. PEM Fuel Cells with Bio-Ethanol Processor Systems is intended for use by researchers and advanced students on chemical, electrical-electronic and mechanical engineering courses in which dynamics and control are incorporated with the traditional steady-state coverage of flowsheet synthesis, engineering economics and optimization.
