Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Utterly compelling in its imaginative power and bold naturalism, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall opens in the autumn of 1827, when a mysterious woman under the assumed name Helen Graham seeks refuge at the moorland mansion of Wildfell Hall. As her neighbour Gilbert Markham comes to realize, Helen has painful secrets from her past that make her the object of gossip and jealousy. Combining the story of a man’s physical and moral decline through alcohol, a study of a broken down marriage, a disquisition on the upbringing of children, and an uncompromising critique of the position of women in Victorian society, this novel of betrayal balances a stern moral framework and an optimistic belief in universal redemption. Scandalizing its readers on publication, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is a daring tale and a powerful depiction of a woman’s fight for independence and creative freedom, told with the author’s signature wit and irony. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tenant of Wildfell Hall was the second novel written by Anne Brontë, the youngest of the Brontë sisters. The novel begins with the arrival of a young widow, Mrs. Graham, in a rural neighborhood. She brings with her her five year old son Arthur and takes up residence in the partly-ruined Wildfell Hall. Gossip soon begins to swirl around her, questioning her mysterious background and the closeness of her relationship with her landlord. First released in 1848 under the pseudonym Acton Bell, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall was considered shocking by the standards of the time due to its themes of domestic disharmony, drunkenness and adultery. Perhaps this was why it quickly became a publishing success. However, when Anne died from tuberculosis her sister Charlotte prevented its republication until 1854, perhaps fearing for her sister’s reputation, though some attributed her actions to jealousy. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book excerpt: The Penguin English Library Edition of The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte 'She looked so like herself that I knew not how to bear it' In this sensational, hard-hitting and passionate tale of marital cruelty, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall sees a mysterious tenant, Helen Graham, unmasked not as a 'wicked woman' as the local gossips would have it, but as the estranged wife of a brutal alcoholic bully, desperate to protect her son. Using her own experiences with her brother Branwell to depict the cruelty and debauchery from which Helen flees, Anne Bronte wrote her masterpiece to reflect the fragile position of women in society and her belief in universal redemption, but scandalized readers of the time. They are not human though. Ada was made by her father from the Ground, a unique patch of earth with birthing and healing properties. Though perhaps he didn’t get her quite right. They spend their days healing the local human folk – named Cures - who visit them, suspiciously, with their ailments. When Ada embarks on a relationship with a local Cure named Samson, and is forced to choose between her old life with her father, and a new one with her human lover. Her decision will uproot the town – and the Ground itself – for ever. A poised and simmering tour-de-force, FOLLOW ME TO GROUND is a sinister vision of desire and freewill, voiced in earthy prose and eviscerating detail by an astoundingly original new writer. Her second and last novel, it is presented in the form of a series of letters from one Gilbert Markham to his friend and brother-in-law about how he met his wife. An enigmatic young widow arrives at the uninhabited Elizabethan mansion called Wildfell Hall. After taking up residence there in a hermit-like manner, she becomes the victim of terrible slander. She is befriended by a local man who is sceptical of the local and who gradually comes to learn of her tragic past. Among the most disturbing and shocking of the novels published by the Brontës family, it enjoyed incredible success—despite her sister Charlotte's preventing its re-publication after her death. “The Tenant of Wildfell Hall” constitutes a must-read for lovers of classic English literature and it is not to be missed by those who have read and enjoyed other works by the Brontë sisters. Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive.
