Book excerpt: Wavelets are a mathematical development that may revolutionize the world of information storage and retrieval according to many experts. They are a fairly simple mathematical tool now being applied to the compression of data--such as fingerprints, weather satellite photographs, and medical x-rays--that were previously thought to be impossible to condense without losing crucial details. This monograph contains 10 lectures presented by Dr. Daubechies as the principal speaker at the 1990 CBMS-NSF Conference on Wavelets and Applications. The author has worked on several aspects of the wavelet transform and has developed a collection of wavelets that are remarkably efficient.

Montgomery at the NSF-CBMS Regional Conference held at Kansas State University in May 1990. The book focuses on important topics in analytic number theory that involve ideas from harmonic analysis. One particularly valuable aspect of the book is that it collects material that was either unpublished or that had appeared only in the research literature. The book should be a useful resource for harmonic analysts interested in moving into research in analytic number theory. In addition, it is suitable as a textbook in an advanced graduate topics course in number theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The following notes grew out oflectures held during the DMV-Seminar on Random Media in November 1999 at the Mathematics Research Institute of Oberwolfach, and in February-March 2000 at the Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris. In both places the atmosphere was very friendly and stimulating. The positive response of the audience was encouragement enough to write up these notes. I hope they will carryover the enjoyment of the live lectures. I whole heartedly wish to thank Profs. Matthias Kreck and Jean-Franc;ois Le Gall who were respon sible for these two very enjoyable visits, Laurent Miclo for his comments on an earlier version of these notes, and last but not least Erwin Bolthausen who was my accomplice during the DMV-Seminar. A Brief Introduction The main theme of this series of lectures are "Random motions in random me dia". The subject gathers a variety of probabilistic models often originated from physical sciences such as solid state physics, physical chemistry, oceanography, biophysics . . . , in which typically some diffusion mechanism takes place in an inho mogeneous medium. Randomness appears at two levels. It comes in the description of the motion of the particle diffusing in the medium, this is a rather traditional point of view for probability theory; but it also comes in the very description of the medium in which the diffusion takes place.

Book excerpt: This series of lectures provides an overview of the author's work on quantitative applications in cognitive linguistics by discussing a wide range of studies involving corpus-linguistic as well as experimental work. After a discussion of how corpus linguistics, cognitive linguistics, and psycholinguistics relate to each other, the author discusses empirical and statistical studies of a wide variety of phenomena including morphophonology (morphological blends and alliteration effects), corpus-based cognitive semantics, frequency and association at the syntax-lexis interface. The book concludes with chapters exemplifying the role that bottom-up approaches can take, the role of statistical methods more generally, and the role of converging evidence from corpus and experimental data. The lectures for this book were given at The China International Forum on Cognitive Linguistics in May 2013. In the e-book version all handouts have been made available at the back. All audio of the lectures as well as the handouts are available for free, in Open Access, here.

In the age of ‘virtual intimacy’, the author retains the courage to celebrate the spirit of direct, face-to-face classroom interactions. As he delivers a series of lectures on education, pedagogy and cultural politics, and engages with his students at Jawaharlal Nehru University, the book begins to take its shape. It invites the readers to raise critical questions, sharpen their socio-political vision, and reflect on educational practices and pedagogic possibilities. In a series of ten lectures on Diachronic Construction Grammar, the book presents the theoretical foundations, open questions, and methodological approaches that inform the constructional analysis of diachronic processes in language. The lectures address issues such as constructional networks, competition between constructions, shifts in collocational preferences, and differentiation and attraction in constructional change. The book features analyses that utilize modern corpus-linguistic methodologies and that draw on current theoretical discussions in usage-based linguistics. It is relevant for researchers and students in cognitive linguistics, corpus linguistics, and historical linguistics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a much-needed exploration of contemporary theories on psychotherapy and spirituality, moving away from the more traditional, non-spiritual aspects of psychoanalysis and psychotherapy. The book consists of a dialogue between the opposing sides; most of the papers have responses from the "other" side. This dialogue mirrors the early communication between Freud and Jung regarding spirituality, and opens up doors for continuing collaboration between psychoanalysis as a pure science and the spiritual and religious dimensions within. This inspiring collection of papers grew from the lectures held in 2002 at the London Centre for Psychotherapy. In the time of increased interest in more scientific schools of psychoanalysis such as neuropsycho-analysis, there is also a surge of interest in spirituality within psychoanalysis, as demonstrated by the great interest in these lectures.

Book excerpt: This monograph explores the close relationship of variouswell-known pattern recognition problems that have so far beenconsidered independent. These relationships became apparent with thediscovery of formal procedures for addressing known problems and theirgeneralisations. The generalised problem formulations were analysedmathematically and unified algorithms were found. The main scientificcontribution of this book is the unification of two main streams inpattern recognition - the statistical one and the structuralone. The material is presented in the form of ten lectures, each ofwhich concludes with a discussion with a student."Audience: " The book is intended for both researchers and studentswho work in knowledge management and organisation, machine learning, statistics, and symbolic and algebraic manipulations. It provides newviews and numerous original results in their field. Written in aneasily accessible style, it introduces the basic building blocks ofpattern recognition, demonstrates the beauty and the pitfalls ofscientific research, and encourages good habits in readingmathematical text.
