Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Telephone, the Microphone and the Phonograph: Authorized Translation With Additions and Corrections by the Author, With 70 Illustrations on Woods Strictly speaking, the telephone is merely an instrument adapted for the transmission of sound to a distance, and this idea of transmitting sound is as old as the world itself. The Greeks made use of means which might effect it, and there is no doubt that these means were sometimes used for the pagan oracles. But such transmission of sound was within somewhat narrow limits, and certainly did not exceed those of a speaking-tube. Mr. Preece considers that the earliest document in which this transmission of sound to a distance is distinctly formulated dates from 1667: he refers to a paper by one Robert Hooke, who writes to this effect: "It is not impossible to hear a whisper at a furlong's distance, it having been already done; and perhaps the nature of the thing would not make it more impossible, though that furlong should be ten times multiply d.And though some famous authors have affirm'd it impossible to hear through the thinnest plate of Muscovy glass; yet I know a way by which 'tis easie enough to hear one speak through a wall a yard thick. Book excerpt: Earth Sound Earth Signal is a study of energies in aesthetics and the arts, from the birth of modern communications in the nineteenth century to the global transmissions of the present day. Douglas Kahn begins by evoking the Aeolian sphere music that Henry David Thoreau heard blowing along telegraph lines and the Aelectrosonic sounds of natural radio that Thomas Watson heard through the first telephone; he then traces the histories of science, media, music, and the arts to the 1960s and beyond. Earth Sound Earth Signal rethinks energy at a global scale, from brainwaves to outer space, through detailed discussions of musicians, artists and scientists such as Alvin Lucier, Edmond Dewan, Pauline Oliveros, John Cage, James Turrell, Robert Barry, Joyce Hinterding, and many others.

Book excerpt: This cross-disciplinary volume illuminates the history of early phonography from a transnational perspective, recovering the myriad sites, knowledge practices, identities and discourses which dynamically shaped early recording cultures. With case studies from China, Australia, the United States, Latin America, Russia, Sweden, Germany, Spain, Portugal, France, and Italy, Phonographic Encounters explores moments of interaction and encounter, as well as tensions, between local and global understandings of recording technologies. Drawing on an array of archival sources often previously unavailable in English, it moves beyond western-centric narratives of early phonography and beyond the strict confines of the recording industry. Contributions from media history, musicology, popular music studies, cultural studies, area studies and the history of science and technology make this book a key and innovative resource for understanding early phonography against the backdrop of colonial and global power relations.

Book excerpt: In Recording History, Peter Martland uses a range of archival sources to trace the genesis and early development of the British record industry from1888 to 1931. A work of economic and cultural history that draws on a vast range of quantitative data, it surveys the commercial and business activities of the British record industry like no other work of recording history has before. Martland's study charts the successes and failures of this industry and its impact on domestic entertainment. Showcasing its many colorful pioneers from both sides of the Atlantic, Recording History is first and foremost an account of The Gramophone Company Ltd, a precursor to today's recording giant EMI, and then the most important British record company active from the late 19th century until the end of the second decade of the twentieth century. Martland's history spans the years from the original inventors through industrial and market formation and final take-off--including the riveting battle in recording formats. Special attention is given to the impact of the First World War and the that followed in its wake. Scholars of recording history will find in Martland's study the story of the development of the recording studio, of the artists who made the first records (from which some like Italian opera tenor Enrico Caruso earned a fortune), and the change records wrought in the relationship between performer and audience, transforming the reception and appreciation of musical culture. Filling a much-needed gap in scholarship, Recording History documents the beginnings of the end of the contemporary international record industry.
