Book excerpt: After World War II, the centre of gravity for world Jewry moved utside Europe. In the aftermath of the Holocaust, large-scale emigration and post-war assimilation resulted in a disheartening contraction of European Jewry, with the notable exception of France. Today, Europe's Jews number only 17 percent of the world Jewish population. At the beginning of this century, they comprised 83 percent and were the centre of the modern Jewish experience. In a radical reversal, former peripheries became the centres, notably American Jewry, the largest and most dynamic of the Diaspora communities, and the State of Israel. An examination of the altered place of Europe and its future role in Jewish history is long overdue. Jewish Centers and Peripheries examines the dynamic relationship between European, American, and Israeli communities at times bringing personal knowledge of significant events pertinent to understanding the relationships. Collectively they suggest that present conditions are ripe for the re-emergence of European Jewry, though on a scale much diminished from that of the pre-Holocaust period. Moreover, the prospects for the rejuvenation of European Jewry mirror the possibilities for Jewish continuity everywhere. Jewish Centers and Peripheries is a strikingly informative assessment of the condition of world Jewry at the close of the century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume consists of articles by Israel Finestein written over a period of more than fifty years. He was throughout a close observer of the Jewish scene and latterly a prominent participant. These wide-ranging studies graphically present significant features of Jewish public life in Anglo-Jewry or bearing upon that community. They include appraisals of conflicting attitudes within both the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; the author's contemporary impressions of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, of which he first became a member in 1945, written in 1948-9; his assessments of transformations in priorities during the second half of the 20th century; the role of the Jewish intellectual and biographical studies or character portrayals of leading personalities, including Sir Isaiah Berlin, Sir Arthur Goodhart, Dr Vivian Lipman and Israel Zangwill. Judge Finestein writes as a historian with often personal knowledge of whom and of what he describes. This insightful and readable work, of human interest, is meant for the general reader as much as for the Jewish communal activist or scholar.

Download or read book Education and Sustainability written by Seonaigh MacPherson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-04-29 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book critically examines the impact of migration, education, development, and the spread of English on global bio-linguistic and cultural diversity. Derived from findings from a comparative eco-linguistic study of intergenerational language, culture, and education change in the Tibetan Diaspora, the book extends its analysis to consider the plight of other peoples who find themselves straddling the Indigenous-Minority-Diaspora divide. MacPherson explores the overlapping and distinctive sustainability challenges facing indigenous and minority communities when they are connected by and within diasporas, and seeks to adequately explain the discontinuities and disjunctures between their educational struggles and achievement levels.
