Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Geography, History and Civics This monograph discusses the teaching of History, Geography and Civics in the elementary schools. It contains a course of study in each of these subjects. While these are treated separately, they are all parts of the one general subject, Social Studies. An attempt has been made to establish a relationship between the three. These subjects are of great value. They are, after Reading, among the most useful in the common school curriculum. They have a direct relation to good citizenship - the great purpose of the schools - as few other subjects have. Their study is neces sary if we recognize the importance of man's relation to his fellows. They furnish abundant life, which is not their sole practical value but is a part of their value. They are full of interest and content as no other subjects are, literature alone excepted. T'hey furnish resources for the use of leisure time. If well taught, they inspire patriotism, appreciation of one's country, and recognition of one's obligation to serve it. They cultivate, if well taught, tolerance, imagination and judgment. They make large demands upon the teacher. The wider her reading, the more she has studied, the more she has traveled, the larger her vision, so much the better teacher will she be, pro vided she does not talk too much in recitations - the temptation of the teacher, particularly in these subjects. If she knows how to get work from pupils, if she has a positive enthusiasm for the worth of geography, history and civics, and can make this enthusiasm contagious, the results of her teaching can be no other than to make some community and neighborhood of the future a better community and neighborhood for men, women and children to live in because she has been a teacher there. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Course of Study in History, Civics, and Geography: Grades I to VIII The Course of Study will be especially helpful as a guide to new teachers entering the corps, and, I trust, will prove an inspiration for further achievement to teachers and supervisors now in the corps who have so generously contributed their time and thought to its organization. The new form, also, will no doubt make it more usable and more attractive in appearance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Long experience with traditional modes of instruction has indicated their failure, and teachers now turn to a more direct application of important principles of peda gogical procedure long urged by the practical psychologist and recently verified by careful experimental work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Course of Study in History, Civics, and Ethics for the Day Elementary Schools Fundamentally, history, -civics, and Geography deal with relationships or problems arising from man's efforts to live with his fellows on the earth. They are different aspects of the same social subject, rather than three closely correlated subjects as they have often been viewed. This conception of History, Civics, and Geography as a tri-une subject has exercised a controlling influence over the selection of the kind and extent of teaching material, and the recommendations of types of teaching method, made in this Course of Study. It should, therefore, be thoroughly understood and appreciated by the teacher who would achieve the aim intended in this Course. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Geography To all students of geography it is a lamentable fact that there is even yet a lack of respect for this branch of science. Though we have a new geography rich and vital in its possibilities to contribute to twentieth century education, yet all too many teachers are oblivious of the significance and value of the subject and, in the schoolroom, are rattling the dry bones of formal statement and definition. Their view of the subject, and their method of teaching it, restricts its value and curtails the interest which it ought to enlist from pupils. The object of this volume is, first of all, to present and instill in the minds of teachers the true nature of modern geography. Therefore Part I is devoted to the Nature and Scope of Geography. It is hoped that its careful study will result in establishing a correct and broad view of a subject whose content is rich in edu cative possibilities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Geography, in Elementary Schools We must bear in mind that we are teaching children geography, among other things, and also that we are teaching geography to children. Hence our plan must be organized from two contrasted points of View, always bearing in mind that while the work must be worth while at every stage, it must also be valuable as a whole in preparing pupils for the adult life they will meet out of school. In this elementary book the United States is the field covered. In history, the text covers the colonial period, the westward movement, and the problems of the pioneers - all the simpler phases of our history that can be mastered in the elementary schools. The geography introduces them to the United States of today, including descriptions of the simple industries and concrete comparisons of the former days with the present time. In the form of simple social problems suggested by stories of settlement and problems of pres ent day social life, an elementary introduction to civics is also achieved. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Association of History and Geography But the relationship, in teaching, cannot be dismissed as simply one even between pupil, subject, and teacher. There is the further relationship between the subject and its fellows. The formal object lesson, though valuable from the aspect of sense training, often proved in practice barren and unstimulating. In the presentation and examination of the object there was often an isolation which, even when it did not lead to real distortion, did not at any rate generate' intelligent mental associations. It was with some relief, therefore, that teachers welcomed the wider conceptions involved in Nature Study, a subject which arded as favourable a field as the object lesson for the training of the senses, but which, at the same time, presented things in their natural setting.
