Book excerpt: Three polymers were synthesized by the acid catalyzed polycondensation of m-dibenzoylbenzene with ethylenediamine, and by the polycondensation of p-dibenzoylbenzene with tetrafluoro-m-phenylenediamine and tetrafluoro-p-phenylenediamine. The thermal stability of these polymers was determined by thermogravimetric analysis in air and in an inert atmosphere. In addition, three isomeric polymers which were synthesized in a previous investigation by the polycondensation of m-dibenzoylbenzene with o-, m-, and p-phenylenediamine were subjected to combined thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) - vapor phase chromatography (VPC) -- mass spectral analysis (MS). By means of this combined analysis, it was possible to thermally degrade a polymer sample, collect the condensable products given off upon thermal degradation, separate the products by vapor phase chromatography, and identify them by mass spectroscopy. Upon identification of the fragments given off, it was possible to characterize the mechanism or mechanisms of thermal degradation of these polymers. (Author).

Each book focuses on a particular topic and gives a balanced in-depth overview of the respective subfi eld of polymer composite science and its relation to industrial applications. With the books the readers obtain dedicated resources with information relevant to their research, thereby helping to save time and money. In-situ intercalative polymerization in the presence of filler provides distinct advantages when compared to other nanocomposite synthesis techniques including the possibility to polymerize a large range of thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers, improved handling of gaseous or liquid monomers or high pressure polymerization and improved control of heat of polymerization. This volume aims to highlight these advantages of the generation of polymer nanocomposites with a large spectrum of polymer matrices. Following an overview of the synthesis methodologies, the text goes on to discuss the most relevant polymer materials, including polyamides, polyolefi nes, polyacrylates, polyethylenes, polyurethanes, polyesters and polyepoxides.

The photolysis results of the copolymer are described. Progress toward the preparation of 2-(4- carboxyphthalimoyl)-9,10- dimethoxyanthracene from 2-amino-9, 10-anthraquinone and mellitic anhydride is described is described. Synthetic intermediates have been characterized by ultraviolet visible, infrared and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. For some time this laboratory has been interested in energy absorptive materials, specifically polymers which could decompose cleanly to gaseous products on thermal or photic excitation. We recently reported the synthesis of some unsaturated polyoxalates according to the following equation and their characterization. The thermal decomposition of these polymers was studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and mass spectroscopy. The polymers were characterized by 1H-NMR spectra run in DMSO-d6. Since the chemical shifts of the end groups were sufficiently different from those of the internal groups, it is possible to determine molecular weights and degree of polymerization (DP) values by NMR end group analysis.

This book was released on 1963 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bibliography of reference resulting from a literature survey on thermal degradation, thermal oxidation, and thermal analysis of high polymers is presented. Typical materials included are: polystyrene, polyethylene, polybenzyls, polyphenyls, polyxylenes, hydrocarbon polymers, halogen substituted polymers, polymers containing acid and ester groups, synthetic polymers, and some inorganic and semiorganic systems. The coverage is believed to be extensive within the limits set, although it is not claimed to be completely exhaustive. In particular, the coverage of naturally occurring polymers and materials derived from them includes only certain papers and is not complete. Also not included are the vast array of studies of materials that might be considered as model compounds. However, a moderate representation of these model compounds is given. The bibliography consists of 813 items, many of which are annotated by the author. These are grouped under general and material headings. To further guide the reader among these, there are provided a subject index and and index of authors. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Definitions of what is meant by a heat-resistant polymer vary considerably. We have taken the term to mean a polymer which can be used, at least for short time periods, at temperatures from 150°C. The greatest problem which arises in writing a monograph on such materials is the tremendous amount of data that is available. More than 2000 references have been published on one heat-resistant polymer system alone over a period of little more than two years. The result is that a very high degree of selectivity must be exercised with respect to the information reproduced. We have chosen to restrict our coverage to polymers that have received at least some degree of commercial exploitation and to details of their methods of preparation, their thermal and thermo-oxidative stabilities and modes of degradation, and their properties at elevated temperatures. It must be emphasized that other properties not cited, e. g. , hydrolytic and chemical stability, and resistance to ultraviolet radiation, may be equally important in particular uses of these materials. The "older" heat-resistant polymers, e. g. , the thermosets and some of the fluorine-containing materials, are not dealt with in such depth as are the "newer" polymers with aromatic and/or heterocyclic rings in the chain. This is because books have been available for some time on the well-established commercial polymers and developments in them have not been as marked re cently as in the aromatic and heterocyclic macromolecules.
