Book Synopsis The Swimsuit Issue and Sport by : Laurel R. Davis
Download or read book The Swimsuit Issue and Sport written by Laurel R. Davis and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2016-02-24 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue demonstrates how the magazine encourages individual and institutional practices that create and maintain inequality. Laurel Davis illustrates how the interactions of media production, media texts, media consumption, and social context influence meaning. Individuals' interpretations of and reactions to the magazine are influenced by their views about gender and sexuality, views that have been shaped by their social experiences. Based on extensive interviews with Sports Illustrated producers and consumers, as well as analysis of every swimsuit issue from the first in 1964 to those of the 1990s, the book argues that Sports Illustrated uses the swimsuit issue to secure a large male audience by creating a climate of hegemonic masculinity. This practice produces considerable profit but on the way to the bank tramples women, gays, lesbians, people of color, and residents of the postcolonialized world.
Download or read book The Swimsuit written by Christine Schmidt and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Swimsuit: Fashion from Poolside to Catwalk documents the modern swimsuit's trajectory from men's underwear and circus/performance wear to its unique niche in world fashion. It emphasizes the relationship between fashion, media, celebrity, sport and the cultivation of the modern body. This fascinating book provides an historical, sociological and cultural context in which to view how the swimsuit - and Australia, the country that significantly influenced its modern form - migrated from the cultural and colonial periphery to the centre of international attention. In addition, the book offers new perspectives on national histories of the swimsuit and investigates how traditional European fashion centers have opened up to new markets and modes of living, bringing together influences from around the globe. The Swimsuit is essential reading for students, scholars, and the general reader interested in fashion, popular culture, history, media, sport, and gender studies.

Download or read book Contest written by Gary Genosko and published by Arp Books. This book was released on 1999 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contest is a riotous excursion through the contemporary sportscape. Gary Genosko uncovers the cultural and political qualities of the world of sports from its gaudiest moments-the professional spectacle of Super Sunday and Sports Illustrated's swimsuit edition-to its obscure nooks and crannies, like figure-skating psychoanalyst Ernest Jones. The exploration ranges from hockey ("Disciplining Road Hockey," "Athletes as Pets") to sports' relationship with design ("Furniture and Sport"); from bodybuilding ("A Portrait of Jesus as a Young Schwarzenegger") to bike messengers; from gymnastics ("Olympian Cuteness") to memorabilia. Genosko's exhilarating approach employs an idiosyncratic mix of cultural studies, contemporary theory, and a lifetime of collecting sports cards as he celebrates the heroic amateurs and the radical losers who are the real stars of Contest.

Download or read book The Handbook of Artificial Intelligence written by Avron Barr and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is a "heuristic problem-solving program?" How do computers understand English? What are "semantic nets" or "frames?" Can computer programs outperform human experts? Such questions -- asked by scientists, engineers, students, and hobbyists encountering Artificial Intelligence for the first time -- can now be readily answered by The Handbook of Artificial Intelligence, a work which makes the full scope of important techniques and concepts of AI available for the first time to the rapidly expanding world of computer technologists and users. The scope of this handbook is broad: over 200 short articles covering all of the important ideas, techniques, and systems developed during 25 years of research in the AI field. The articles are written for people with no background in AI. Some articles serve as overviews, discussing the various approaches within a subfield, the issues, and the problems. The handbook is a reference work, a textbook, a guide to programming techniques and to the extensive literature of the field, and a book for intellectual browsing. Jargon has been eliminated in each of the short, penetrating articles, and the hierarchical organization of the book allows readers to choose how deeply they wish to delve into a particular subject. Conceived and produced at Stanford University's Department of Computer Science, with contributions from universities and laboratories across the nation, The Handbook of Artificial Intelligence promises to become the standard reference work in the rapidly growing AI field. - Jacket.
