Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Encyclopedia of Mineralogy provides comprehensive, basic treatment of the science of mineralogy. More than 140 articles by internationally known scholars and research workers describe specific areas of mineralogical interest, and a glossary of 3000 entries defines all valid mineral species and many related mineral names. In addition to traditional topics - descriptions of major structural groups, methods of mineral analysis, and the paragenesis of mineral species - this volume embraces such subjects as asbestiform minerals, minerals found in caves and in living beings, and gems and gemology. It includes current data on the latest in our geological inventories - lunar minerals. It describes the properties, characteristics, and uses of industrial resources such as abrasive materials and Portland cement. A directory will guide traveling mineralogists to the major mineralogical museums of the world, with their special interests noted. Clear technical illustrations supplement the text throughout. To help the student and professional find particular information there are a comprehensive subject index, extensive cross-references of related topics (whether in this volume or others in the series), and reference lists to background information and detailed advanced treatment of all topics. The Encyclopedia of Mineralogy is a valuable reference and source for professionals in all geological sciences, for science teachers at all levels, for collectors and `rock hounds', and for all who are curious about the minerals on earth or those brought back from outer space.

For Cs, only the LCT pegmatites with the zeolite group mineral pollucite at Bikita (Zimbabwe Craton) and Tanco (Superior Province Craton) are of commercial importance. Common characteristics of world-class LCT pegmatite deposits include their Meso- to Neoarchean age and geological setting within greenstone belt lithologies on Archean Cratons. This study presents the first coherent and comparative scientific investigation of five major LCT pegmatite systems from the Yilgarn, Pilbara and Zimbabwe Craton. For the evaluation of their Cs potential and of the genetic concepts of pollucite formation, the pegmatites from Wodgina, Londonderry, Mount Deans and Cattlin Creek were compared to the Bikita pollucite mineralization. The integration of the new data (e.g., geochronological and radiogenic isotope data) into the complex geological framework: 1) enhances our knowledge of the formation of LCT pegmatite systems, and 2) will contribute to the further exploration of additional world-class LCT pegmatite deposits, which 3) may host massive pollucite mineralisations.

This book was released on 2012-09-27 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2012 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Geology, Mineralogy, Soil Science, grade: "none", Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (School of Science), course: Economic Geology-Mineral Exploration, language: English, abstract: The research work “Geology and Petrochemistry of Granitic Pegmatites in Jema’a Field” is a systematic study of the pegmatites in relation to the adjoining granitoids (biotite muscovite granite, albite granite and granite aplite) with a view to understanding their geological and geodynamic evolution and subsequent economic potential through the behavior of rare elements. The field work was conducted on a scale of 1:50, 000. 33 rocks and mineral separates extracted from pegmatites were analyzed. The samples were subdivided into two parts; one part was analyzed using X-Ray Fluorescence to generate data on major and minor elements, while Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis was used to generate data on trace elements. The other part of the samples was made into thin section for petrographic studies. Petrochemical and petrographic interpretations concur on the changes in colour of micas from brown biotite in granitoids to blue muscovite, to purplish green mica to purple mica in the pegmatites corresponding to increase in rare elements (Rb, Cs, Na, Ta, Nb, Ga) and volatiles (P, H2O, F) from the granitoids into the pegmatites. This constitute a fractionation trend. This is also strongly supported by fairly consistent increase in Aluminum Saturation Index (A/CNK), normative corundum, normative albite, Lost on Ignition (LOI), differentiation Index (DI) and corresponding decrease in Ba, Zr and Ti. The pegmatites contains more fluxes and liquidus depressing elements (P, H2O, F) especially phosphorus. The granitoids (biotite muscovite granite, albite granite and granite aplite) are therefore fertile, peraluminous, siliceous and S-type and are parental to the pegmatites. The feldspars display perthitic textures which show incomplete solid solution and lowering of liquidus. The tectonic discrimination of the granitoids and the pegmatites show that they were formed within syncollisional, peraluminous, and active continental margin. The research suggest fractionation as a metallogenetic process. The genetic model presents the granitoids ; biotite muscovite granite, albite granite and granite aplite as products of internal chemical differentiation of a fractionating batholiths where NaO replaces K2O as the system is cooling. This is common to most granite-rare-elements-pegmatites systems all over the world. Fractionation via rare elements accumulations is therefore an exploration tool.

Book excerpt: Despite extensive studies on pegmatites in the past (Barth 1928, Bjorlykke 1935, Brotzen 1959, Niggli 1920, 1937) and more recently (Cerny 1982, Gordienko 1996, London 2005, Peretyazhko et al., 2004 Shmakin & Makagkon 1999, Strunz 1974) their origin and genesis remain controversial, particularly so for complexly zoned pegmatites. Some researchers (e.g., Fersmann 1931, Turner & Verhoogen 1960) consider them to be of igneous origin, while others believe that pegmatites are metamorphically or metasomatically generated (e.g., Barth 1962, Gresens 1967). In this paper we present evidence in favor of the igneous origin of pegmatites and provide insights into some major pegmatite-forming processes. Our evidence is based primarily on fluid and melt inclusions (FI and MI, respectively) and experimental studies, and suggests that the vast majority of granitic pegmatites are of magmatic origin, even though many may be affected by recrystallization and metasomatism. The very existence of silicate melt inclusions in minerals of pegmatites provides proof of their magmatic origin. In this contribution, we also discuss melt and fluid inclusion evidence concerning the nature and evolution of some granitic pegmatites. Our observations bear primarily on F-enriched and/or alkaline pegmatites, but they are also useful for considering processes involving simple pegmatites composed of feldspar, quartz, and little else. We confine ourselves to major processes of pegmatite formation that can be constrained by the study of MI and FI. Processes and evidence of the late hydrothermal evolution stage, characterized by dilute aqueous solutions, are beyond the scope of this paper.
