Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this text, leading scholars from around the world take stock of two centuries of international intellectual investment in Hinduism. Since the early 19th century, when the scholarly investigation of Hinduism began to take shape as a modern academic discipline, Hindu studies has evolved from its concentration on description and analysis to an emphasis on understanding Hindu traditions in the context of the religion's own values, concepts and history. Offering an assessment of the current state of Hindu studies, the contributors to this volume identify past achievements and chart the course for what remains to be accomplished in the field.

Book Synopsis The Future of Hindu–Christian Studies by : Francis X. Clooney
Download or read book The Future of Hindu–Christian Studies written by Francis X. Clooney and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-14 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of Hindu-Christian studies revives theology as a particularly useful interreligious discipline. Though a sub-division of the broader Hindu-Christian dialogue, it is also a distinct field of study, proper to a smaller group of religious intellectuals. At its best it envisions a two-sided, mutual conversation, grounded in scholars’ knowledge of their own tradition and of the other. Based on the Westcott-Teape Lectures given in India and at the University of Cambridge, this book explores the possibilities and problems attendant upon the field of Hindu-Christian Studies, the reasons for occasional flourishing and decline in such studies, and the fragile conditions under which the field can flourish in the 21st century. The chapters examine key instances of Christian–Hindu learning, highlighting the Jesuit engagement with Hinduism, the modern Hindu reception of Western thought, and certain advances in the study of religion that enhance intellectual cooperation. This book is a significant contribution to a sophisticated understanding of Christianity and Hinduism in relation. It presents a robust defense of comparative theology and of Hindu-Christian Studies as a necessarily theological discipline. It will be of wide interest in the fields of Religious Studies, Theology, Christianity and Hindu Studies.
Book Synopsis Introduction to the Study of the Hindu Doctrines by : René Guénon
Download or read book Introduction to the Study of the Hindu Doctrines written by René Guénon and published by Sophia Perennis. This book was released on 2004-05 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: René Guénon's Introduction to the Study of Hindu Doctrines can serve as an introduction to all his later works-especially those which, like Man and His Becoming according to the Vedanta, The Symbolism of the Cross, The Multiple States of the Being, and Studies in Hinduism, expound the more profound aspects of metaphysical doctrines in greater detail. In Part I Guenon clears away certain ingrained prejudices inherited from the 'Renaissance', with its adulation of the Greco-Roman culture and its compensating depreciation-both deliberate and instinctive-of other civilizations. In Part II he establishes the fundamental distinctions between various modes of thought and brings out the real nature of metaphysical or universal knowledge-an understanding of which is the first condition for the personal realization of that 'Knowledge' which partakes of the Absolute. Words like 'religion', 'philosophy', 'symbolism', 'mysticism', and 'superstition', are here given a precise meaning. Part III presents a more detailed examination of the Hindu doctrine and its applications at different levels, leading up to the Vedanta, which constitutes its metaphysical essence. Lastly, Part IV resumes the task of clearing away current misconceptions, but is this time concerned not with the West itself, but with distortions of the Hindu doctrines that have arisen as a result of attempts to read into them, or to graft onto them, modern Western conceptions. The concluding chapter lays down the essential conditions for any genuine understanding between East and West, which can only come through the work of those who have attained, at least in some degree, to the realization of 'wisdom uncreate'-that intellective, suprarational knowledge called in the East jñana, and in the West gnosis.

Download or read book An Introduction to the Study of Hinduism written by Guru Prosad Sen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Hinduism The popular notion regarding Hinduism is that it is a religious organization, and essentially polytheistic in its character, that is, in other words, to be a Hindu and to remain a Hindu, a man must subscribe to certain articles of religious beliefs common to all Hindus, must acknowledge the authority of some books (Vedas and Shastras), and the supremacy of certain interpreters thereof. According to this popular notion, very generally accepted as correct, without examination of the grounds thereof, the Hindu is an idolator, and no one who does not worship the myriads of Hindu gods and goddesses, 33 crores in number, is not, and cannot be, a Hindu. Book Synopsis Studies in Hinduism by : René Guénon
Download or read book Studies in Hinduism written by René Guénon and published by Sophia Perennis. This book was released on 2001 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies in Hinduism consists of articles published posthumously, to which has been added René Guénon's separate study, Eastern Metaphysics, the text of a lecture delivered at the Sorbonne. In this work Guénon completes his presentation of Hindu metaphysics, which he considered the most primordial and comprehensive body of spiritual teaching possessed by the human race, one capable of throwing light upon and illuminating the essence of every other Tradition. Of special interest are three chapters on various aspects of tantra-a doctrine profoundly misunderstood in the contemporary West-which Hindu authorities consider the spirituality most appropriate to the Kali Yuga, as well as a chapter on the sanatana dharma, the Hindu concept closest to the ancient and medieval Christian idea of the philosophia perennis, which led St Augustine to declare that Christianity has always existed, but only came to be so called after the coming of Christ. Included are extensive reviews of books on Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Ramana Maharshi, Swami Vivekananda, Sri Aurobindo Ghose, Rabindranath Tagore, Mircea Eliade, Paul Brunton, and others, as well as 40 pages of reviews of books and articles by Ananda K. Coomaraswamy. Leading Indian thinkers have called Guénon the most authentic expositor of Hindu metaphysics in any Western language.
