Book Synopsis Strangers in the West by : Linda K. Jacobs
Download or read book Strangers in the West written by Linda K. Jacobs and published by Kalimahpress. This book was released on 2019-10-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strangers in the West is the never before told story about the Syrian/Lebanese immigrants who, beginning in 1880, settled on the lower west side of Manhattan. Coming from what was then known as "Greater Syria," these immigrants gathered near the Battery where they disembarked after their long journey from the Middle East. Settling in tenements recently abandoned by Irish immigrants, these recent arrivals to the New World founded an Arabic-speaking enclave just south of the future site of the World Trade Center. They opened Syrian restaurants, half a dozen Arabic-language newspapers, oriental merchandise and food shops, and four Syrian churches. They capitalized on the orientalist craze sweeping the United States by opening Turkish smoking parlors, presenting belly dancers on vaudeville stages, and performing across the country in native costume. Peddlers and merchants, midwives and doctors, priests and journalists, belly dancers and impresarios--all were part of the small community in its first 20 years. This is their story.

In a series of six meditative pieces, he opens up God's invitation to us today, in the midst of all the violence and corruption of the world, to create new places of belonging and sharing, of peace and kindness, where each one is loved and accepted with one's own fragility, abilities, and disabilities. +

Book Synopsis A Stranger in the House of God by : John Koessler
Download or read book A Stranger in the House of God written by John Koessler and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2009-08-30 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up the son of agnostics, John Koessler saw a Catholic church on one end of the street and a Baptist on the other. In the no-man’s land between the two, this curious outside wondered about the God they worshipped—and began a lifelong search to comprehend the grace and mystery of God. A Stranger in the House of God addresses fundamental questions and struggles faced by spiritual seekers and mature believers. Like a contemporary Pilgrim’s Progress, it traces the author’s journey and explores his experiences with both charismatic and evangelical Christianity. It also describes his transformation from religious outsider to ordained pastor. John Koessler provides a poignant and often humorous window into the interior of the soul as he describes his journey from doubt and struggle with the church to personal faith
Book Synopsis The Stranger's Child by : Alan Hollinghurst
Download or read book The Stranger's Child written by Alan Hollinghurst and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2011-10-11 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Man Booker Prize–winning author of The Line of Beauty: a magnificent, century-spanning saga about a love triangle that spawns a myth, and a family mystery, across generations. In the late summer of 1913, George Sawle brings his Cambridge schoolmate—a handsome, aristocratic young poet named Cecil Valance—to his family’s modest home outside London for the weekend. George is enthralled by Cecil, and soon his sixteen-year-old sister, Daphne, is equally besotted by him and the stories he tells about Corley Court, the country estate he is heir to. But what Cecil writes in Daphne’s autograph album will change their and their families’ lives forever: a poem that, after Cecil is killed in the Great War and his reputation burnished, will become a touchstone for a generation, a work recited by every schoolchild in England. Over time, a tragic love story is spun, even as other secrets lie buried—until, decades later, an ambitious biographer threatens to unearth them. Rich with Hollinghurst’s signature gifts—haunting sensuality, delicious wit and exquisite lyricism—The Stranger’s Child is a tour de force: a masterly novel about the lingering power of desire, how the heart creates its own history, and how legends are made. This eBook edition includes a Reading Group Guide.

Book Synopsis A Stranger in Jerusalem by : Trevan G. Hatch
Download or read book A Stranger in Jerusalem written by Trevan G. Hatch and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-06-26 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A Stranger in Jerusalem, Trevan Hatch attempts to situate the stories about Jesus within their Jewish context. Jesus was a Jew, his friends were Jews, his first followers were Jews, he studied the Hebrew Scriptures (either orally or from texts), he worshiped in the synagogue, and he occasionally traveled to Jerusalem to observe the Israelite festivals. Hatch illustrates that Jesus does not seem to have rejected Judaism or acted as a radical outsider in relation to his Jewish peers, but rather he worked within a Jewish framework. The overarching questions addressed in this book are (1) how can an understanding of early Judaism illuminate our understanding of the Jesus traditions, (2) how did Jesus relate to his Jewish world and vice versa, (3) why did the Gospel writers portray Jesus and his Jewish peers the way they did, and (4) how would Jews in the first and second centuries have interpreted the Jesus traditions upon hearing or reading them? Hatch explores several topics, including childhood and family life in first-century Galilee; Jewish notions of baptism and purity; Jewish prophets and miracle workers; Jewish ideas about the messiah; and Jesus’ relationship with Judas, the Pharisees, the priestly establishment in Jerusalem, the Jewish populace, and his own disciples.

Book excerpt: A Stranger's Journey brings you a novel way to have a group study and fellowship with your friends. After years of leading his men's bible study group, David Thompson became convicted that there was a lack of material for those who want to study and have fellowship on a regular basis. Taking his thoughts and true life situations, David has written short devotionals that are thought provoking and guaranteed to create conversation. His use of humor and satire will hold your interest and give you insight into one stranger's life journey. You may agree or disagree with his thought process, but at least it will make you think. David W. Thompson, in his own words, is the most unusual bank president in the United States. Besides being a banker for over 30 years, David is an ordained minister, church elder and men's bible study leader. Other accomplishments include a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and qualifying to carry a concealed weapon. Mr. Thompson holds a Bachelors degree in Psychology from Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Missouri. But above all else, David is a sold out, totally dedicated follower of Jesus Christ.
