They are often polished in cabochon (cab) form, generally shaped like half an egg, referred to as canteras by the miners. These opals are often transparent, showing internal features much like agates. This is made easier, since these opals are much less expensive than gem opals from Mexico and Australia.This is the first serious book to be published about Mexican opals. It includes enough text to explain opal features, but the words don't get in the way of the photography.Chapters include collectability, colors, patterns, matrix (its color and pattern), typical forms, and specific forms: eyes (eggs), ribbons, internal surfaces, crystal clusters, inclusions and oddities. The latter include contraluz, hidden recognizable shapes, changes in pattern when viewed in indirect light, and unusual fire patterns from internal surfaces.Some of these have not been previously identified and documented. In fact, one unique opal was loaned to the GIA for study.A few free-form opals are also included. These are polished after removing their outer matrix, retaining the meandering shapes of their cavities.The book is complemented by the website, mudpot.com, enabling its content to be kept up to date while sharing slideshows of similar images. The term has been used at least once before (Mitchell 1985), but this volume is the first publication to lay down the scientific basis and systematics for this subdiscipline. Students sometimes call an introductory archaeology course "stones and bones." Archaeomineralogy covers the stones component of this phrase. Of course, archaeology consists of a great deal more than just stones and bones. Contemporary archaeology is based on stratigraphy, geomorphology, chronometry, behavioral inferences, and a host of additional disciplines in addition to those devoted to stones and bones. To hazard a definition: archaeomineralogy is the study of the minerals and rocks used by ancient societies over space and time, as implements, orna ments, building materials, and raw materials for ceramics and other processed products. Archaeomineralogy also attempts to date, source, or otherwise char acterize an artifact or feature, or to interpret past depositional alteration of archaeological contexts. Unlike geoarchaeology, archaeomineralogy is not, and is not likely to become, a recognized subdiscipline.
