Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the conservative Arab Gulf Monarchies - Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) - joined forces on 25 May 1981 within the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC), few fathomed that security requirements on and around the Arabian Peninsula would be so precarious and for so long. To answer their search for permanent stability, Arab Gulf rulers erected a regional alliance that sought to integrate internal and regional defences, as well as strengthen their existing socio-economic ties. Several of the monarchies even hoped that co-ordination on foreign policy issues over which near unanimity existed could, eventually, lead to a full-fledged union as envisaged in the organisation's founding charter. Between 1981 and 2015 these Arab Gulf monarchies experienced major socio-political transformations resulting from upheavals throughout the Arab and Muslim worlds. The perceived necessity to bring about a full-fledged union has come into conflict with entrenched viewpoints from regimes that value traditional military/political roles and norms. In this new study, Joseph A. Kechichian provides an evaluation of GCC States' military institutions to better evaluate whether a stable alliance is capable of enduring over the next few decades, and how civilian leaders perceive the role and influence of their military officers for the task. Kechichian raises fundamental questions over internal, regional and international threats, including an existential challenge emanating from the Islamic revolutionary government of Iran, and assesses how GCC professionals may be preparing to tackle them. He further elucidates on the best methods to meet security challenges not only to secure political survival but also to determine whether conservative Arab Gulf regimes can flourish outside an effective alliance. The volume concludes with an examination of evolving civil-military relations in the GCC States.

Book excerpt: The energy sector still represents the biggest contributor to the kingdom’s GDP, although its share of the economy has been falling as non-oil sectors continue to drive growth. The kingdom’s financial sector represents the second-largest contributor to GDP, accounting for 16.5% in 2014, with Bahrain recognised as a pioneer in Islamic finance, having been the first country in the world to introduce and implement rules specific to Islamic banking in 2001. Manufacturing is the third-largest GDP contributor, at 14.4% of the total in 2014, with the kingdom home to one of the world’s largest aluminuim smelters. Meanwhile, Bahrain continues to invest in considerable infrastructure upgrades, and these are expected to enhance the kingdom’s logistics offerings, as well as help facilitate greater tourism numbers. For its part, tourism has been identified as an area with significant potential for growth, with the Supreme Council for Tourism created to help guide and develop the sector.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world of aviation has moved on rapidly since the appearance of the ninth edition of this pre-eminent resource five years ago. Those developments pertain to market access and market behaviour by air carriers, including competition, new perceptions of safety and security, among others, in relation to transparency of accident investigation and cybersecurity, case law in the area of airline liability, with new cases from the United States, product liability and insurance, the United Kingdom, and elsewhere, the growing importance of environmental concerns, the rights and obligations of passengers, also in the context of ‘unruly’ passengers, and innovative methods for financing aircraft. Special attention has been paid in this edition to regional integration movements, especially in Europe, affecting the mentioned subjects. The book’s extensive references to other sources in the field have been expanded and updated by the author and experts in specialised areas. The present edition addresses the following topics: the regulatory framework governing the operation of air services, including the principle of sovereignty in national airspace; the distinction between State and civil aircraft; dispute settlement in international civil aviation; economic regulation of international air transport services, including the establishment of air services agreements; inter-airline cooperation in the context of competition law regimes; liability of the various service providers, in particular airlines, and related insurance coverage; the promotion of safety standards; criminal acts affecting the safety of aviation; the role of international and regional organisations with particular reference to that of the European Union; liability of the aircraft manufacturer for equipment; and financial and security interests in mobile equipment. The many practitioners, officials, business people, and academics with a professional interest in aviation law will appreciate this new edition as one of the fundamental works in the field, and newcomers will discover an incomparable resource. This eleventh edition is ready to be of unmatched service to any practising member of the air law community anywhere in the world.
